151 Congressmen Derive Financial Profit From War

Who profits from the Iraq war? More than a quarter of senators and congressmen have invested at least $196 million of their own money in companies doing business with the Department of Defense (DoD) that profit from the death and destruction in Iraq.
According to the latest reports, 151 members of Congress invested close to a quarter-billion in companies that received defense contracts of at least $5 million in 2006. These companies got more than $275.6 billion from the government in 2006, or $755 million per day, according to FedSpending.org, a website of the watchdog group OMBWatch.
Congressmen gave themselves a loophole so they only have to report their assets in broad ranges. Thus, they can be off as much as 160 percent. (Try giving the IRS an estimate like that.) In 2004, the first full year after the present Iraq war began, Republican and Democratic lawmakers-both hawks and doves-invested between $74.9 million and $161.3 million in companies under contract with the DoD. In 2006 Democrats had at least $3.7 million invested in the defense sector alone, compared to the Republicans’ "only" $577,500. As the war raged on, so did the billions of profits-and personal investments by Congress members in war contractors, which increased 5 percent from 2004 to 2006.

Investments in these contractors yielded Congress members between $15.8 million and $62 million in personal income from 2004 through 2006, through dividends, capital gains, royalties and interest. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), who are two of Congress’s wealthiest members, were among the lawmakers who garnered the most income from war contractors between 2004 and 2006: Sensenbrenner got at least $3.2 million and Kerry reaped at least $2.6 million.
Members of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees which oversee the Iraq war had between $32 million and $44 million invested in companies with DoD contracts.
War hawk Sen. Joe Lieberman (IConn.), chairman of the defense-related
Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, had at least $51,000 invested in these companies in 2006.
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), who voted for Bush’s war, had stock in defense companies, such as Honeywell, Boeing and Raytheon, but sold the stock in May 2007.
Of the 151 members whose investments are tied to the "defense" (war)
industry, as far as we know, not one of them offered to donate their bloodstained profits to the national treasury to offset the terrible debt they have imposed. Has one of them even offered to donate one cent of their war profits to lessen the debt that increases more than $1 million a minute?
When our boys and girls are wounded the government bills them to return their reenlistment bonus. They have to return any pay they received while they were hospitalized. They have to pay for their helmets and uniforms that are destroyed in the hell of war. But they keep on fighting for these politicians’ right to keep their war profits.

Caveat, doing business with the DoD and having DoD contracts does not equal profiting from the war. My company is a DoD contractor and we haven’t profited one bit. In fact, revenues were higher before the war.

RedneckJoe, The problem that you do not see is that the congresspersons are profiting. They authorize contracts with the companies they have a vested interest in. This creates a conflict of interest.
Several years ago, the Postmaster General authorized a contract with Coca-Cola to install vending machines in post offices. The problem was thet the postmaster General owned stock in Coca-Cola which meant he profited from his decision.
Dick (shoots his best friend) Cheney made enormous money from his stock in Haliburton.
Working for a DoD contractor is one thing, authorizing contracts in which you profit from is another.
I made a post similar to this a few months ago about a needed Constitutional Amendment on this subject.
All members of congress of both houses shall be forbidden to receive any compensation, enumeration, gifts or gratuities of any kind except salary of office except where prescribed by law in the state they reside.
of course, there isn’t a chance in hell of getting anything like this impelmented. The corrupt like the corruption.

Last night, significant news broke that directly impacts our push for Impeachment Hearings and a possible Inherent Contempt charge for Bush Administration officials such as Karl Rove:
Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan has revealed in his upcoming book that:
• Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, and Vice President Cheney lied about their role in revealing the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson – actions easily amounting to obstruction of Justice.
McClellan also admitted that:
• There was a coordinated effort within the Bush Administration to use propaganda to pump up the case for the Iraq war and hide the projected costs of the war from the public.
Scott McClellan must be called to testify under oath before the House Judiciary Committee to tell Congress and the American people everything he knows about this massive effort by the White House to deceive this nation into war.
Last week, a subpoena was issued for Karl Rove to testify before the Judiciary Committee. It appears he will take every legal action to block this subpoena. The truth is that Congress has the right – and obligation – to hold him accountable now – not months or years from now. It is long past time to pass Inherent Contempt and bring Rove, Libby and others before Congress.
We simply cannot ignore these recent developments, nor should we postpone serious inquiry until after the next election.

I believe that it is the duty of Congress to pursue impeachment whenever there’s significant evidence of wrongdoing, be it by Republicans or Democrats, regardless of the timing of elections or the current political environment.
Some of you have written me demanding that I deliver hearings or impeachment. As hard as I have been fighting for this cause, I cannot make impeachment happen by myself. What I can do, and what I have been doing at every turn, is trying to communicate two simple messages to my colleagues:
• the serious allegations of wrongdoing and the clear-cut rationale for impeachment hearings;and
• the fact that the public will support our efforts when Congress boldly acts on the side of justice and accountability.
Unfortunately, to date, these arguments have not been enough to convince even a majority of the liberal and progressive Members of Congress to support impeachment hearings. In addition, the leadership of the Democratic Party in Congress genuinely feels that pursuing impeachment will jeopardize our congressional agenda and threaten gains in the November elections. Although I genuinely disagree with this view, to date I have been unable to convince them to change this policy.
I understand the challenges that we are up against, and I recognize the odds that we face. Nevertheless, I remain unfazed and unyielding.
This new evidence from Scott McClellan could be the tipping point – but we must move quickly. I will use the McClellan admissions to help convince my colleagues that we must hold impeachment hearings.
Regardless, I will continue to fight for progressive values and our Constitution. I will do everything I can to pursue accountability for criminal actions taken by this Administration and this Vice President. I will be a furious opponent to any expansion of this misguided war, and I will fight against the use of torture by our government and to protect our civil liberties here at home.
Most of all, I will continue my efforts to convince my fellow members of Congress and voters, that we should not be a party of passivity – but that we succeed when we present the public with stark choices that are based on the guarantees in our Constitution, and not on the politics of the moment.
I will continue – at every pass – to call for impeachment and accountability. While I wish more of my colleagues supported our movement, we must not let our discouragement lead to apathy and distraction in this important election year when we must break free from eight long years of illegalities, corporate handouts, and a tragic and devastating war.
We should not end the calls for impeachment. I will push against the crimes of the Bush Administration whenever I am provided the opportunity. I will use my role on the Judiciary Committee to take on Administration officials – like I have done with Condoleezza Rice, Attorney Generals Gonzalez and Mukasey, and FBI Director Mueller.
I have not given up our fight to hold this Administration accountable and neither can you. I am grateful for your patriotism and your support. I’ll continue to keep you informed and part of the conversation.

Years ago, I went to a Web site that had displayed US paper dollars and made an interesting formulation that 911 was all about money. ( the two slashes through and S )
His using geometric triangle folds and equations in mathematics, the dollars tell a picture story that is linked straight out of the twilight zone. When folded over, one can see pictures that form smokey buildings representing the Pentagon and Twin Towers. And what’s still remarkable , taken into fact, it may just be accidental coinicidences or somebody with too much time on hand the pictures final fold ends in the shape of a paper airplane. Weird.
What those two crashing money centers did on 911, was create a windfall for the people who see fit the radicalism of conservatism for their own tight circle of wealth driven politicians, lawyers and corporate book cookers.
Men like Kerry, who posed as a mock opposition party or Gores pimping for the greedy and unproven enviromental causes. Cheney’s big oil bosses , the Bushes and Clintons long history with one another, from cocaine drops in Arkansas to the CIA’s involvement with Iran/Contra. It’s a mafia. And they have the law on their side, but the people still have the unwritten powers to stop them.
War and drugs are the biggest money makers, next to big oil, so if the increases in heroin coming out of Afghanistan haven’t already proved another obvious cash cropper direct vein to structrual government corruption, then former government workers coming out into the open will help the deaf dumb and self induced stupid to pay attention.

had warned America of the “MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL-COMPLEX”. However, in his orginal draft of this speech, he really meant the “MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL-CONGRESSIONAL-COMPLEX”, but for whatever his reasons were, Eisenhower decided to leave that part out. Watch the DVD “Why We

with the exception of maybe a few, none of them has never served a day in the Armed Forces.
Nor do they have any relatives serving in uniform on the frontlines of the conflicts in Afghanistan
and Iraq. But if either of these politicans ever decides support Bush’s plan to attack Iran or to reinstate the draft, Generation Y (of “The Milennials”) of military service age won’t stand for it and
may rise up against them not since the 1960’s during the Vietnam War.

These BASTARDS have profited from war, misery, and unimaginable human suffering for generations! Until there is a change in basic human behavior and outlook of life, war and the evil dirtbags that sell it, will NEVER go away. The terrible things that have been done for gold, diamonds, oil, and slave labor, go to the very history and creation of humanity. We cannot evolve and rise above this until every person on the planet realizes that what they do at home profoundly effects people on the other side of the planet. We continue to ignore what we all know is the right thing to do, we don’t care as a species. I recently watched a program on the diamond trade, which we all know is corrupt, but even I was shocked and I pay attention to such things. This involved the greed and evil that surrounds the diamond trade, which is only a small percentage of what is generated by oil. How many years will it be before we truly learn how much suffering and evil has been caused by love for oil? Will we have enough soul left to even give a crap? By then will the only thing matter be, is our gas tank full and how much did it cost? How long will we sell our souls and the souls of people unfortunate enough to live where these resources are? We as a people must defeat and escape this destructive behavior, we MUST educate the unwilling, the selfish, the greedy, and the clueless, before it destroys everything!

Individually we find that we are powerless against corporate media or Big Oil or Washington. Our choices are limited. Our effectiveness diminished. This is not by accident. Unions, social gatherings, clubs that all flourished before the 1960s have all been destroyed by those who find you & me a threat.
Today people will tell you that protest are ineffective. And they are. But real change does not come from the ballot box as the politicians & media want you to believe. Great social change like the eight hour work day, child labor laws, a woman’s right to vote, civil rights, etc., etc. all came about through blood & sweat & great effort. Just showing up every four years to pull the lever on election night only changes the faces of those who will lie to you. For the next four years.
Today we find ourselves in a very unique situation because rank & file republicans, democrats, greens, independets & libertarians ALL agree that Bush & Co. MUST GO NOW. And we must end this war NOW.
Congress & the president have failed to come up with an exit stategy for our troops. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. Constant redeployments, lack of equipment or medical leave, destroying families & creating thousands of widows & orphans on both sides, etc. MUST STOP NOW.

This is the ONLY vote that counts.
Reduce its sway over you, and simultaneously reduce your complicity in it.
If we could do so to the tune of a grand total of only 10% or 15% across the entire population, I believe that this system would collapse. Maybe even less would do it. There is already a thriving underculture…minorities (especially Hispanic minorities, which cannot be so easily co-opted as others because of language differences) a rapidly growing group of totally disaffected young people and an equally rapidly growing group of REALLY angry working class people. If all of us… minorities, the young, anybody else with some sense…were to pull even 30% or 40% of our efforts out of this system, we could cause a sea change that woiuld cripple our current rulers.
We cannot vote them out. Hell bluebird, there is really only one party in our two party system, and the votes THEMSELVES are suspect. But we CAN starve them out.
In the end, it is still all about numbers.
Let us reduce theirs until they fall.
I see no other way.
I have been saying this in various ways on the web for going on two years now. Clearly the OTHER tactics are going nowhere. We make little baby steps in places like Connecticut while the Blood For Oil war machine simply rages on in the Middle East.

Mike Miller, those aren’t our only choices. Before we get sucked into a revolutionary bloodbath on our soil, we should really consider this General Strike. The money we pour into the government is their life blood. I think this is an incredibly powerful idea.
Voting won’t do it anymore. Protesting helps but we’re running out of time. A general strike would indeed set off a bunch of alarms.

I told you guys this was going to start with the truckers. We need to stand with our Union brothers and sisters, and some are striking right now. Our labor class has been told for twenty years they are weak. Big brother and these vampiric corporation need it snapped off right in their ass. Thank Reagan and daddy Bush for weak and corrrupt Unions. I’d rather have corruption from people who are looking out for the little guys, than the pirates that are robbing our economy and sending our industry overseas now. Did anyone here even consider that their agenda may just be to establish a civil war within this country and on our own soil? What makes us immune to that very idea? War is profitable, especially in a country as resourceful as this one. As long as we continue to handle and manage the whole good vs. evil belief structure the way we have done so in the past, than they won’t be too far off from winning that little wager. Most on this website, write as if we should all storm the Capitol and raise a coupe. As if that works.
Maybe THEY want to disempower you by projecting to you, through the media, what theywant you to believe – that they are all powerful and evil doers to be feared that can get away with whatever they want to? When I was in the Arabian sea with my carrier in 01 dropping bombs on the enemy, I felt I was doing the right thing, protecting our national interests. I’m a Navy vet and I felt the same during the first Gulf War about doing my part and defending the best country on earth. Now we’re involved in a war where good people are killing and getting killed over something based completely on lies. I recently learned a new word: Plutocracy; a government or state ruled by the wealthy. The American peoples’ true voice is not being represented by the pieces of trash that have the power to get us back to a government of constitutional law and not a police state. …from enemies, foreign and domestic. We need to take back OUR country.

There is only one way to get out of this situation. Only one. Turn off your TV, turn off the internet (what’s the point of getting ‘more reliable’ information? Can serfs like us prove any of it? It can all be propaganda in the end anyway), and start forming neighbourhood security groups where neighbours watch each others back. They make a pact to defend each other against ALL enemies – foreign or DOMESTIC (you know what I mean??). There is strength in numbers. And this is the only thing that pisses the feds off. Want proof? Think Ruby Ridge, think Waco.
Go outside, right now. Go visit your neighbour. Go to his door, knock and say “hi, I’m ___, I live over there at number___. If you need anything, just let me know”. You’ll feel good about doing it and your neighbour will know there’s someone in his neighbourhood who’s looking out for him. He might return the favor. Once you have strength within your community you can take the next step forward. Alone, you are helpless. And if people think that Americans are going to simultaneously stand up and bond in arms, they’re deluded. Who will stand up with you if they don’t even know you??
