15mph speed limit for eco-towns

Vehicles driving on roads in planned eco-towns will have to stick to 15mph speed limits, it has emerged.
The restriction is among proposals designed to minimise the environmental impact of the settlements.
Government sources say the new town centres are to be car-free, and the 15mph limit will be enforced on “key roads” leading into them.
Environmental protesters have criticised the scheme for focusing too narrowly on carbon emissions.
‘Revolutionary living’
More than 50 bids to create the zero-carbon developments have been entered by companies.
Housing minister Caroline Flint will set out standards expected of them later this week and the announcement of the shortlist of 10 new towns is expected in the coming weeks.
Ms Flint said: “These developments will be exemplars for the rest of the world, not just the rest of the country. It’s critical that we get it right – and I make no apology for setting the bar as high as possible.
“We have a unique opportunity to deliver a programme which will genuinely revolutionise the way people live.”
Up to five eco-towns are expected to be built by 2016, and up to 10 by 2020.
They will have populations of around 5,000 to 20,000 and be linked to larger towns and cities.

Wow Aaron, looks like you’ll be living in an eco-town soon. Just think about it, your neighbors will be just like you! You’re going to love it, seriously .. they’ll be just like you and everybody will look out for everybody… especially what they’re doing and isn’t that a good thing? So if you accidentally leave the lights on, somebody will see it and make sure you give all those wasted carbons back to nature. Maybe by the means of community labor? Maybe by turning down your heat in the winter? There are plenty of ways to give back, and I’m sure you will give plenty. Here in Belgium, there are already ALOT of towns where the limit is 30 km/h ( 18,5 mp/h ).
I never obey them and drive 50-60 km/h, except when there is a school nearby, then I drive 40-50 km/h.
I’m sorry, but 30 km/h is retartedly slow. Sorry, I will never drive that slow… never.

NOTHING surprises me in in this loopy country anymore. It seems the zealots in positions of power have this pathological compulsion to produce more and more insane regulation and control.
They weren’t satisfied with the gun ban, fox hunting ban, smoking ban etc, they always have to find something else. Other news yesterday was the announcement that shopkeepers were going to be forced into more expense by having to hide all cigarettes and tobacco away in special cabinets. Also, they are going to start fingerprinting passengers at Heathrow’s new terminal. My cut off point with all of this is going to be to refuse any form of ID card because it is only one step away from the mark of the beast spoken of in Revelation.

I’m all for this, cars are totally intrusive into everyday lives, our close proximity to cars in england make it not only a danger to health but causes strees as your constantly battling with traffic when you just want to walk down the road. I see car free towns as a better town. And I don’t even think global warming is man made. Global warming or not, reducing oil consumption, moving toward alternative green energy, and driving less and getting on a bike are all great solutions for better air and a more sustainable existence.
However a 15mph speed limit is one of the most stupid solutions I have ever heard!
What incentives to these people get? Avoiding a ticket.Super, now you get a line of cars driving 15mph spewing out emissions and diesel trucks sitting in traffic jams.

Jody you are a moron. i can almost GUARANTEE just like every other environmentalist hypocrite you too own a car. its a product of dehumanization really. the animal rights and environmentalist movements. the notion that animals and plants are more important then humans is absurd but these people really feel that way. these are people who would save a dying animal before their dying best friend if the situation arose. i saw an interview with the founder of PETA she is a rich greedy snooty arrogant liar. they are all brainwashed hypocrites peta euthanised 97 % of the animals they obtained last year and the employees are all young and so brainwashed they think that its better to kill all the animals you obtain as long as they are doing it. it is laziness by the organization. they encourage people to avoid animal rescues and humane societies because they euthanise too many animals but statistically these organizations only euthanise between 25 and 50 percent depending on the organization and they obtain more animals. i am so sick of these people trying to force legislation that forces me to do things i am not required by constitutional law in the first place. i sure as hell have no plans of living car free and in an eco town thats ridiculous. jody is obviously someone who doesn’t think about what they say or probably doesn’t think at all.

Surely it’s more efficient to have less restrictions on speed because engines are less efficient at lower speeds and more efficient at higher speeds. We should be removing ALL restrictions where possible, including traffic lights and junctions etc. You get more pollution from traffic that is clogged up and moving slowly than you do from fast moving traffic. Time is saved when things are moving faster and so the economy improves too. It seems that the world is being run, as it always has been in the past, by degenerate, inbred, idiots who want to control everything. A 15 mph limit will make things worse not better! If there is a problem with noise pollution you can plant a thick layer of trees along the roads which is good for nature and absorbes sound! You don’t cure a headache by cutting off your head, you just have to be able to see past your own nose and see the bigger picture. Ignorance kills more people than anything else in this world.

The eco-nazis despise the freedom that the automobile represents, so by making it more of a complete pain in the ass to drive anywhere, you’ll be more willing to use public transportation, in which they fully control your movements. There is nothing wrong with the development of more efficient vehicles.
It’s just wrong when they lie about the reasons for doing it.
Basically they have to make a mirage of effort to sell the global carbon tax. Once it’s been passed, don’t be surprised to see the big players dropping any effort to make more efficient vehicles.

45 miles per hour (mph) is the most fuel efficient speed to drive for most vehicles. I did not state miles per gallon. do the research. Our farm tractor is highly efficient on fuel but driving it 10mph per say it only gets 6 miles to the gallon. The equation is time and speed. If that same tractor was geared higher and was driving for say 45mph it would get about 26 miles to the gallon. At the speeds they are quoting there would be so much additional pollution that its completely ignorant.

This is stupid and will waste more gas and release more carbon emissions.
For anyone with half a brain, the lower speed limit will use the lower gearing in cars, this is by far the least efficient in mpg than the higher gears.
I have an Instant mpg rating on my car. Under 15mph i get 4-9 mpg. At 30 mph this jumps to over 35 mpg, at 40 about 33 mpg, at 60mph I am at about 30mpg.
It all has to do with the gearing and the engine, has nothing to do with the speed.
A car with a 6 speed auto transmission would be much more efficient than one with a 4 speed. I think this would be a more logical step.
