An 11-year-old in Aurora says his first amendment rights are being trampled after he was suspended for wearing a homemade shirt that reads “Obama is a terrorist’s best friend.”
The fifth grader at Aurora Frontier K-8 School wore it on a day when students were asked to wear red, white and blue to show their patriotism.
The boy’s father Dann Dalton describes himself as a “proud conservative” who has taken part in some controversial anti-abortion protests. Dalton says the school made a major mistake by suspending his son for wearing the shirt.

Freedom of speech for ALL, that means no matter what their party affiliation, race, nationality, religion, etc., and whether or not we might “personally” agree with what’s spoken…or in this case written. Let’s not forget folks, we can’t shoot ourselves (and our pro-constitutional message) in the foot with words that speak contrary to our beliefs….cuz doing so shows hypocrisy that only serves to weaken our credibility. #12, the father DID make his kid wear that shirt, and he also MADE the shirt.(even thought that chicken scratch looked like a 10 year old made it) the only reason the child has any say in the matter is because his father drove those thoughts in his brain. im sure the father new that this would stir up trouble and that is whats wrong.

Schools clearly state that you cannot wear clothing that disrupts the learning process, freedom of speech does not include the freedom to break all the rules.
by enrolling his child in a public school, he is saying that his child will abide by the rules put forth by the school..he didnt..bottom line.
i live in Denver and the stupidity here is appalling (both left and right) but i couldn’t go to my job with a shirt that has this on it,and if i refused to take it off, they could fire me because i broke the code and rules i agreed to by accepting this job, and no amendment would protect my choice to break the rules at my work. its called a dress code and its a reality in this world.

You would probably be singing a different tune if he wore a short saying, “McCain is a bible-thumping warmonger psycho.” Where as one is offensive to religious people, the t-shirt was suggesting that just because Obama is on the opposite end of the political spectrum, that he is somehow chummy with terrorists. I don’t think he should have been suspended, after all it is free speech, now matter how idiotically some people choose to use it, but parents shouldn’t be using their kids as political billboards either; unless someone actually thinks an 11 year old chose to wear it and wasn’t in fact given the t-shirt by his parents. Schools should be political-bias free zones. In my civics class I listened to the teacher outright lie about Tomas Hobbes’ political philosophy, and considering we were all grade 10’s mostly everyone was eating it up because they assume everything a teacher tells them is fact. So if anything the school should have brought it up with his parents rather than punishing the student for it.

I live in Aurora, On the morning news today, the principle of the school was on saying that this boy was not suspended for wearing the shirt, he was “actually suspended for”…………are you ready for this…….” CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. The school feels it is their responcibility to teach our children how to be obedient, patriotic, and to honor state and country.”, was the schools final word on this matter. What a crock!! The boys dad is talking to an attorney about a lawsuit, as the school has changed their position in this matter 3 times since it started. All of which have violated the childs civil rights and liberties.

Whatever the reason, people have a right to say what they want to say (no matter how stupid, arrogant or racist it may be), it’s up to the people around them to decided if they want to listen. It becomes a problem when people say “he can’t do/say that because it’s something I don’t like to hear.”
Everyone has a right to critize this kid, just like he had the right to wear the shirt, but taking away the shirt is just as good as taking away his rights (even if his father made the shirt). People need to stop being so arrogant over having other “hurting their feelings” with ideas or words.
And if you respond to this try to do it in an intelligent way or don’t… it’s your right to say whatever you want, in whatever way you want.

Everyone on this earth is free from the very first breath they take. I will say whatever the fuck I want because I can and I will. If anybody has any objection they are of course entitled to their opinions. I may not agree with what some people say but I will defend to the death their right to say it. Every American should feel the same way. Schools do not have the authority to infringe on peoples constitutional rights. They are not dictators. They are fucking public schools. The father should sue the fuck out of them, get a huge settlement from it and then take his kid out of that school and go to a more civilized institution somewhere else.

Were the ones who made the real physical problem suspended? No they weren’t. If i am assaulted for having a shirt that says “Stop slave labor. Don’t shop Walmart” because it is someone else’s favorite place to shop, does that mean i am responsible for paying the fine for provoking the assault? I think not. In the school, they do not have the same dress codes as work places, believe me, i put five kids through colorado schools. It is clear and always has been clear that the schools in colorado are biased, all are democrats.

When I asked why, they told me their teacher said it would help the school. This kind of thing did not happen when the kids wore Anti-Bush t-shirts to school in 2004. I agree mostly with MM post #45 on the vote 3rd party, but I don’t put restrictions. I see the best that educated voters can do right now is vote for whoever they like the most, specially if it is not one of the tw obig parties. I believe it is too late to take the election away from obama or mccain, even with the market the way it is, but if we can take over a third of the general votes away from both parties, then that will be a worthy footnote in the history books.
The only way we can save the country without spilling innocent blood is by shocking the establishment. Once people and politicans see that their is a growing group of educated and politically active citizens then others will step-up like Ron Paul and we can take back the government from the ground up.

i remeber talking in my American govt class last year. i was bashing hillary, obama, and mccain. Everyone got so offended, im sorry. Then i asked the teacher what Obama’s pastor was saying that was controversial and she said AIDS and he said 9/11 was our fault. All the seniors eyes filled with disgust and rage and was saying why would our gvt want that for our country. I didnt even go there to take the class on a little mental field trip. I would have probably been suspended. Plus no one would believe me. I’m deeply offended by the outlook Aussie has expressed here, and i’d like to quip. I believe Aussie has every right to an opinion, and the expression thereof. I do not mean this as a personal attack, nor would i ever burn an Aussie book. I’m merely expressing myself.
for starters, where’s the intelligence in a statement rife with hate speech and flippant obscenity that aims to condemn or validate condemnation of the hate speech and flippant obscenity others might express? maybe you’re just trying to irritate some emotional response from people to prove a point, but hopefully people here are cognitive enough to understand a message without having to vomit it out and examine the pieces.
Secondly, the point all us ““one eyed” free speecher’s” have been attempting to convey is that the father, child, other children, teachers, faculty, parents, etc. all have cognitive abilities, and as such should be allowed the opportunity to express those capabilities (to the extent that they do not infringe upon another’s right to do the same) in some form manifest with respect to the rest of existence, whatever convictions their individual cognitive abilities have synthesized or brought them to. Quid pro quo, all would be afforded the equal right to expression. without agreeing to these fundamental rights (actually defining them as such), even you, Aussie, would be forced to follow the mire of public opinion, or controlling opinion at least.

I could have sworn that years and years ago, it was ruled that some “rights” stop at the school doors.
With that said, I find this to be sheer manipulation of a child who knows no better, but what are you to expect when you have a parent who is apparently manipulated by the news stations and radio.
The only thing I do like about this is the shadow of protest involved in it, by a manipulated child…

by on of the other ways, i wore a tie-died t-shirt throughout most of my middle school career that depicted a frog wearing a Jamaican beenie, surrounded by smoke, and holding a hookah hose to it’s mouth in front of the capital building. it was very clear, but the teachers wouldn’t dare tell me to take it off. why? because they believed in freedom of expression back in my day. we were people helpng people grow. sure there were plenty of robots functioning only because they were programmed to. but every one of the faculty respected the students’ rights to expression, assembly, petition for redress of grievances…
what has happened? we truly must not be living in america anymore. somehow, we allowed oppression to weasel its way into our government, and we proceeded to institutionalize it.

This “father” intentionally sent his son as an asset-making machine to entrap the school into doing what he knew darn well they would do, or was very much hoping they would do, so that he can sue them and hopefully walk away with millions in punitive damages, or at least tens or hundreds of thousands. But I don’t think it’s going to work. The ACLU might take it on for principle and precedent-setting value, but such will not profit the “father”.

Wow, so were at it once again. Getting away from the true crimes against humanity. Its not bad enough that now an 11 year old has to take on the federal government but were going to question what people put into their body and write on the internet. Ok I have to take a step back here a second and analyze this. Show your patriotism day. Kid shows up wearing something that according to faculty is not deemed appropriate to a learning environment. Ok im clear on this much. The by some leap of the human condition, kids father gets involved, bearing in mind his past as a “rebel” and now we have the perfect news story circulated by none other than my fox of colorado. Wow.

Crimes against humanity, crimes which involve the most heinous disregard for personal morality time and again occur. Why because no one stops them. So the father uses his kid to make a political statement and piss off the other kids whose parents support Obama…. or who are liberal democrats or just other people who don’t believe that shit. I wouldn’t let my kid go over to that kid’s house even if he was a nice kid because I’d be afraid the Dad would try to infringe on their play time to indoctrinate him.
So whatever happened with the HS student who wore that shirt to school that said “Bong hits for Jesus”? At least in that case it sounded like something a teenager might think up on his own.
