He is the latest casualty of a zero-tolerance policy that forbids “dangerous instruments” in schools.
He is not allowed to return to the Newark elementary school until he has completed at least 45 days at an alternative school.
On Monday, the Christina School District was flooded with more than 1,000 angry phone calls from across the country after the Christie family told their story to national media outlets, including The New York Times and the three major television networks.
Zachary’s case struck a nerve with parents and others who feel the zero-tolerance policies unfairly punish children for innocent actions.

No, this crap is everywhere. I heard this story on a local newssttation talking about how they need to protect the other kids and that the kid looks like a little devil (lol). I think he’s adorable!
He’s a 6 year old. Sure the world is fucked but COME ON. This is ridiculous. Any bad kid could use any object to harm another child or teacher. We are getting crazy with these rules, just another example of this FEAR BASED society.

Stupidity is like a disease. When one person gets stupid, suddenly you have a crowd of stupid people following the first stupid person. A fork is not a WMD, nor is it on the list of weapons the military trains with and it surely is not considered a deadly weapon in a child’s hands.
Now, for me, I would like to fork out the eyes of the school board members.
When your child is treated like a POW or criminal, its time to take your children out of school and let them take home school. Best common sense. Avoid the stupid people who run the school systems. They might teach your child that Obama is a god and your child needs to sing songs of praise to him and ban the pledge of allegiance. Instead they sing one nation under obama. That fairy can’t walk on water and he surely is not the president either, but an illegal gay alien.

This is what aggravates the hell out of me. If the right to keep and bear arms had not been infringed by the FAA, hijackings wouldn’t have ever occured in the first place. All the manpower, time, money could have been better spent on securing cockpit entry. Who the hell would try to hijack a plane with armed passengers and zero cockpit entry capability? No one, that’s who.

this is easy and funny if you just calm down and think a minute. for one, you dont ask the ‘administrator’ to change their mind or have mercy on your child, thats what they realy wanted. dont give them satisfaction. heres an idea of what you do, go out to big 5 or some other sporting goods store, and go buy as many of those ‘camping spoons’ as they carry. I think they are not that expensive. furnish your children with the spoons and make your child wear the ’spoon’ around their neck. all school meals for the rest of the year must be eaten with the ‘terror spoon’.

Keep it simple.
I had small knives, like in nail-clippers, as a child and knew not to bring them to school.
To me this shows more to the argument of not vaccinating our kids, and that parents need to put their focus on their children first and for most.
Most are being ‘dumb-ed down’ at an alarming rate, imo.

I still appreciate a man who has a pocket knife. They come in handy. And a pocket knife would be the last thing you pull out when in harms way. I am a young 31 yr old, and find it ridiculous, that we banish useful, handy tools from the system. God forbid, down the road, we cant have forks anymore! Those could do some damage! lol.

Lonna, you are right. Seriously, I bet if they checked out all of the teachers they would probably have found something in their pockets or purses. Possibly a pocket knife or a pair of fingernail clippers. I think if he would have been older it might have been different. Asking my 7 year old about it she didn’t understand either. If they are saying that thius knife he brought is a weapon then maybe they need to get rid of boy scouts, that way they won’t learn anything from that too. I think the school corps, should worry more about educating our children. I understand they need to protect them too. Their main goal to to educate and they are not doing a very good job of that.

This can be linked to Gun control. It’s not the gun that kills, it’s the video game trained person holding the gun. I remember when i ate my lunch at school with my first “fork and spoon” knife. All the kids wanted to use it. At no time was i going to hurt anyone. Next they’ll be banning the pen because it made the mistake, not the kid.

Unfortunately the teachers or cafeteria workers seem to lack common sense these days. In the mid ’90s when I was in school they were just starting out with the zero tolerance policies, even then the teachers would have given the child a warning about the consequences under the new rules. I guess today all the younger teachers are trained to follow regulations, not teach kids about being good people and their responsibility to follow the rules. Rather than just say “You broke the rule, zero tolerance, you are expelled and sent to alternative school, which in NY where im from, is where the problem kids get sent. Im sure thats just what this six year-old needs. The whole thing is ri-goddamn-diculous.

Let’s see… One time I did a demonstration on how to safely clean a .300 Winchester Magnum in public speaking class. (We all had at least a deer rifle and shotgun in our trucks out in the parkinglot, even the teachers.)
One time I did a demonstration on how to sharpen cutting implements. I brought a machete, ax, hatchet, and 10″ hunting knife. I kept them in my locker in full view of teachers and administrators and no one said a word.
This was in the 80’s. Just a short time ago.

The more cameras the more kids will eventually drop out cause of privacy rights being violated especially in the restroom. I have had a terrible education, I did not get no high school diploma. Not even a chance to take a GED test. I was pushed through. I had my Sony cassette Walkman stolen that I have to find back on Ebay back in 1992, but will never get it back. I had my artwork stolen. School bullies and peers that do not like you can be pirates of the school. They can throw sneakers in the toilet with crap inside, and can throw spit balls at you during lunch. Cameras do not mean a damn thing and what do they do most of the camera videos go to a big box in the desert to be record kept and used against you. If the school bullies know where you live they can do some serious damage to your home. Better get a security system at home activated during the school years.

If any of us would’ve said 20 yrs ago that the above story would happen about the 6 yr old kid being suspended 20 yrs into the future….we would’ve been met with loud laughter and “kooky crazy” insults.

Alternative school is a prison camp-type “school” they send you to if you get in trouble.Cameras everywhere even in bathroom doors. You can’t talk all day to anyone except teachers. They make you sit there for hours doing assigned work and if you finish they give you more work. They also frisk you when you enter and you’re not allowed to wear jackets even in winter. The food makes soup kitchens look like 5 star restaraunts. I would know i got 10 days in a hell-hole for flicking off the dictator vice-principal when he untucked my shirt and told me to tuck it back in. When they pulled the cameras his fat a** blocked it from showing him basically assaulting me but instead they gave me a damn class 3 which is up with sexual assault, bringing guns to school, and making terrorist threats.

My own child, whom I had provided a plastic fork and knife, that she could eat her lunch, was commented on by the teacher as dangerous!

Anyway he was on his way home FROM school and the school bully (school admitted problems with this bully) was beating up his best friend and my son pulled his knife out of his backpack. He would have never used it, but the bully ratted him out the next day and they started proceedings to expel my son FOREVER, a second grader and send him to continuation school with much older kids. We fought them and got him back in school, but not after he was out of school for 2 months. My son is now 23 with no problems with law whatsoever, just the one instance with THOUGHT CRIME.

ANything can become a weapon if placed in the right hands. I believe their policy needs to be ammended to allow teachers or school officials to use their own best judgement in each case. That poor child will not even understand what he is being sent to alternative school for. Can we allow our children to keep their innocence a few more years please!!

I love the 4th comment on the other site with the whole story. “we cannot let the teachers simply make judgement calls.” I don’t want my children in a classroom with a teacher that CANNOT make a judgment call. I suppose she has to be a politician to be trusted to use proper judgment?
The poster goes on to say, “and bascially what you are saying is that EVERY kid can now bring a knife to school”, etc.. I would say “yep!” Every boy had a knife when I went to school. They are tools. Period. Yes, they can be used as a weapon but then so can anything else. Punish the offender who doesn’t recognize what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Intent plays a major role. Even in adult courts.

This is a non-story. This has been going on for a long time. My son found a pocket knife at the bus stop, put it in his backpack, forgot about it until dismissal when he took it out and showed it to a classmate who snitched on him. He was suspended. And for what? He was 11 and doing nothing but being a boy who didn’t think through the ramifications of a pocket knife in his backpack. Obviously they have trained the kids well. The student body police. Wonderful! What’s next? Kids snitching on adults?

Schools should outlaw spoons and knives, convicts have been making weapons out of them for year? What about the girls softball team? I wouldn’t want my old girlfriends to have a BAT. A ROCK on the play ground is a pretty good weapon. What about the Chemistry lab? Art Classes have some good weapons too.

My son over a yr ago was suspended for a week from school for bringing the same thing to school. My son is ADHD and he said he forgot that he had it, and for some strange reason gave it to the teacher and that was the first of anyone to see it. So I get a call from the jerk ass principle not only did he treat my son like a criminal but treated me as though I was a neglectful parent. I had to sit in a parent teacher council meeting for 2 hrs.. thank god they considered his ADHD as being the factor and nothing bad really happened. But the whole process was emotionally draining and humiliating!

No honestly my son showed ADHD long before the shots. He was a very active baby inside the womb, when I brought him home from the hospital long before his shots, he was a very “VERY” alert newborn. I dont believe he was “poisoned”; however my bestfriends child has autism and showed it later in infancy. Although her grandfather had the genius form of Autism, her newest child, she has refused to give her vaccinations and she is doing great. There are true forms of autism, bipolar and adhd. My son happen to be one of them. And his father and his father had it too. And he is from another country where they dont vaccinate like they do here! So, dont get too paranoid! LOL

This assassin idea ensures that if your young kid gets jumped by three kids several years older than him and he fights back at all in self-defense, he’ll receive an equal suspension with the aggressors. This happen all the time. The teacher asks the kids to bring their own dishes for a picnic (or what ever) and the kid grabs his camping kits not even thinking about the knife. And then the yuppie teacher freaks out on the Kid when it is partially her fault for not telling the kids specifically what dishes to bring. It is wrong to assume that every kid will channel the information through his mother — to add the sensibility teacher forgot. THE TEACHER IS WRONG.

Well after a few school shootings, I can understand why most districts have a very strict policy against weapons. This kid shouldn’t have been suspended for 45 days, however, the punishment should be there. I think a 3 day suspension would give the parents a better incentive of watching over Jr.
Now when it comes to school yard scraps, it would be better if the kids were allowed to resolve the conflicts from time to time in the yard. The whole punish the aggressor and the victim bit is a terrible way to train the kid for self-defense. Teachers are hardly everywhere anyway at the school grounds. The defender gets off while the bully takes a 3 day hike.

I carried a knife all my life, from the time I was 5 or 6 years old, carried one to school until I graduated in 1979, all the boys in my class carried one. I even had teachers borrow my knife to cut something. In all those years, there was never an incedent. Have we become a nation of such weak and unrespocilbe people that this little boy must be punished for what most of us did when we were young?

Zero-Tolerance is just an excuse to deprive people with any kind of common sense,people who would otherwise be able to make a judgement call…In almost any situation,regarding any type of”infraction”..it doesn’t work.
All zero tolerance does is remove the ability for those with common sense to excersise discretion.
We need more people in such positions to have the ability,THE OPTION, to excercise discretion.
Like drinking and driving,sorry for the example,but if one is found to be getting into a car by the authorities,but never gets underway,that person should have the option to call a cab,or walk home,if there was no damage done to the property or person of another,unless of course he becomes unruly as drunks do,and then the authorities can charge him with disorderly conduct…etc…not a DUI.
Did you know,that you can walk home from a bar in Florida,and the police can give a DUI for having your car keys in your pocket?,even after you decide to be responsible and not drive?.
Yup,they can,after they cite you for public intoxication…
What ever happened to one not being guilty of a crime because they did not harm anyone else in any definite way?.
