After attacks, Europe hurries to tighten gun laws

HELSINKI – Several European countries have restricted gun laws in the wake of school massacres, gang violence and other gun-related crimes:
_Finland announced plans Wednesday to impose stricter restrictions on firearms, including raising the minimum age for handgun ownership from 15 to 20. The proposal was prompted by two school massacres within a year in which lone gunmen opened fire on classmates and teachers.

_Belgian lawmakers passed strict new gun control laws in 2006 in reaction to the racially motivated shooting deaths of a toddler and her black baby sitter in Antwerp.
_Swiss citizens are demanding a referendum aimed at confining army weapons to military compounds and banning private purchases of pump-action rifles and automatic weapons — following a spate of suicides and homicides.
_The Portuguese Parliament is currently discussing a government proposal to tighten gun laws, including denying bail to anyone suspected of a gun crime.

This was my ‘favorite’. Under many legal scenarios mere POSSESSION of a pistol is a “Gun Crime”! So..does that suggest that anyone found carrying a pistol, without ‘Caesar’s licit’ (i.e., a BS concealed-carry permit), can be thrown in the clink and held indefinitely (bail denied)?
This is first-class, tyrannical oppression! I’m not gonna ‘play ball’.

Will someone tell AJ to layoff the SSRI angle for mass shootings. How many millions of people are there who take this class of drugs and own firearms? Get it?
The fact is there are mentally unstable people in this world. Did the drugs aggravate their psychosis, maybe. Certain folks are probably incorrectly diagnosed.
AJ is doing a disservice to law abiding citizens who happen to take these drugs. There are millions of them that have guns and NOTHING bad happens. The NWO wants to use psych records to confiscate and regulate firearms. You are supporting their position, which is a flawed position. Please stop it.
This doesn’t mean the drugs are good for people. You are too smart not to recognize this.

Well, what caused the “problem” before SSRI’s? How many people are violently killed in the world each day? Is the answer “none” because we don’t read about it in the newspaper? This is media sensationalism. Propaganda. You think it is a problem because you are told it is a problem.
Despite all of our discoveries and advances in medical science, we still know very little how the human brain works. Don’t believe me? We still cannot create a robot/machine that can walk like a human being, yet our children can do it before the age of one.
Each of us is different. Beginning with our genetics, the chemicals our mothers were exposed to before we were born, what happened as we were born, how often we were held, our environment during those key first years of development, our life experiences, the chemicals we are subsequenlty exposed to, etc. If you get the right combination of variables and add an SSRI—POW! Who knows, maybe this guy at too many twinkies that morning.
When it comes to something as complicated as brain function, chemistry and stress, it is impossible to single out one variable to explain any given event. I can tell you one thing though. If I had been on the street the day this guy snapped, a number of his victims would be alive today. Of course, I would be breaking the law by choosing not to be a victim.

Gary, I would have said the same thing, but after reading the article, it sounds like some of the gun laws in Europe are much looser than they are in the U.S.

Gun laws are good. Why would you want a gun? To defend yourself? Why not use your firsts instead of being a pussy that needs a gun…
In Australia we have good gun laws, not every random can just own a gun, which is why we have such low shooting rates.
Guns are generally for killing. That is why they were invented; a weapon for war.
There is shooting for recreational reasons too, in that case, apply for a shooters licence.
Oh also.. LOL.. When the NWO comes? Then use your fists on them too. Guns are not the only way to rid an enemy.

There is already written in the constitution what kind of weapons the average citizen is allowed to own and those weapons are the ones that are no longer being used by the military. The idea that the founding fathers did not take into consideration future weapons is idiotic considering that there was the funding for a standing army that could be fielded against the armies of other countries. They did not force the average citizen to use Pikes and spears.

Here in Germany most of the TV news stations are switching after the topic right to some stupid US reporters complaining about the bad gun laws in the US, saying that the gun lobbies are to powerful to allow some new gun laws to be past and that everyone owns a gun and it’s way to dangerous bla bla bla.
Politicians say though the gun laws are already appropriate in Germany and there is no additional need to tighten those.
P.S. The gun shooter was receiving psychological treatment because of his depression.

Can you say Antidepressant ! Investigator Siegfried Mahler said authorities had learned that the suspect was treated for depression in 2008, with five visits to a psychiatrist between April and September at an area clinic. He was supposed to continue the treatment at another clinic, but apparently did not show up, Mahler said.
