Americans on food stamps tops 36 million

USDA said 36.492 million people were receiving food stamps, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. In July, enrollment stood at 35.851 million. At the current rate, an estimated one in eight Americans receive benefits.
The program, which helps poor people buy food, has seen enrollment jump by 4.707 million during 2009 amid a lingering economic downturn in the United States. Participation grew by 2 million people from May to August.

Think of a game that mirrors our capitalism, but in a faster time frame. MONOPOLY!! In the beginning everyone has the same, as time goes on that changes by luck, saving, investing, etc.. When it reaches a certain point, someone has evrything and the rest our bankrupt—-GAME OVER—-. Who would play that game if instead of starting over, you always, throughout life pick up where your “Dad” left off, generation after generation after generation.. I know I would not play that game. The only way to play that way would be if the “winner” gave everyone a little money to continue playing..but never would you have a fair chance.. hhmmm

maybe obama should look at the past. FDR started a movement the cc and is what they did is hire young able bodied men to set up camps and they worked on conserving national and state parks all around the us. This was around the depression in the 40’s. I believe this program saved america and lots of lives. obama needs to offer the same oppurtunity to these young people only this time they should set them up to run farms to grow food for the american people. why import when there is so much land you can grow enough for everyone. It would also creat jobs for anyone that needs one. Just an idea anyway

All the hard core Libertarians might not like FDR’s idea but it worked at that time in history. I think it’s a great idea myself but it seems the trains already left the station. I mean if we had everyone working it seems all those LRAD weapons would go to waste when martial laws declared. I get the impression Obamas really concerned with saving the bankers and not the average working or unemployed American. FDR didn’t attack our countries economic problems with half steps. Increasing unemployment benefits and food stamps is a band aid. America needs a real manufacturing base not just a service sector economy to prosper again, not just a green jobs revolution with another new (Carbon) tax.

add one more to the list. i have a appointment today to get food stamps. im 40 never have gotten
any type of gov assistance or wanted it. ive been unemployed for 6 months and am applying for jobs that pay half what i was making. i have a morgage two kids and a wife. im not proud about getting foodstamps and dont plan on telling anyone i know im getting them. should i not feel bad because 36 million other people are getting them? i still do. i want to provide for my family. it makes me so frustrated and mad.

If someone needs assistance with things like food because they have fallen on hard times or just can’t make ends meet with the job that they bust their butts at, then no problems with giving them help. I don’t people who are perfectly able to work and don’t want to shouldn’t be on the system. If they are then they should be required to help out in society some how.

i am also a taxpayer and built alot shit all over the country worked hard since i was 15 never got a damn thing given to me and had to fight for every scrap but my trade as well as alot of other trades have been hit the hardest in unemployment due to being tyed to the house bull and if my brothers would need it i would not hesitate to give them a helping hand maybe extra benefits to keep them from loosing thier house its only fair and being a fucking human being and not adding to the already shitty housing numbers give them the extension and the stubbs for grubbs they deserve it remeber who keeps the wheels turning…..the middle class

I agree. Here’s my story: I am the single income provider in my home of my girlfriend and my 5-year old daughter. My girlfriend is also going to college. When we tried to see if we could receive any kind of help for food or baby sitting- we were denied. All they went by was my weekly gross pay, they did not even take into account all the bills, and additional money we put back into the state. My advice is fuck trying to do it the right way by saying you’re a family, just say you don’t know where the dad is.

Same situation happened with me and my fiancee. We found out she was pregnant and figured, “We’ve been paying into this system why not get some return on it” And applied for foodstamps, while she was pregnant they allowed us to have them. She ended up having a miscarriage, we think due to mercury poisoning. When our quarterly came up we were denied because she was no longer pregnant. But if she had applied by herself she could have gotten them because she was not working at the time.
Moral of the story, if you need help, don’t be ashamed to ask for it, you have been paying into with taxes since you started working. But like others have said don’t get lazy, consider it payback from all of the money you have put into the system. And keep looking for work.
It’s too bad I live in a town that is 90% Farm worker immigrants or I could find a nice like minded couple who needed assistance to work for me and the lady and help wake people up. If you live near Salinas, California and are in need of a job please respond to this.

I just had a phone interview with EDD and I’m certain they will cut me off after only two weeks of getting benefits. Don’t feel bad, Jim Dandy, for applying. I never wanted to apply to EDD or for food stamps. You have good reason to get them. The sad thing is that people on drugs can get assistance easier than the working class. I had a friend go in and was given the run around for weeks, and she knows people on drugs who go in and get them easy peezy.
Does anyone know what the interview questions are like? Someone told me if you are a single adult and live with family that you get denied because they feel your family should pay for you.

Incedible and staggering number. In other words, 12.5% of the American population is now relegated to public assitance.
The number would be higher if the gov’t didn’t just extend the unemployment benefits another 20 weeks.

Considering that the majority of the world lives off less then 2 dollars a day, I would assume the world bankers would not care about how many Americans are on food stamps and need assistance. I would imagine they would want America to step in line with the rest of the world and live off less then 2 dollars a day.

I don’t think that anyone who visits this site “wants” to stick their hand out for government welfare in any form. And just for the record, your social security retirement, state disability and workers’ comp benefits are all form of entitlements (i.e. welfare).
Anyway, it used to be that the gov’t handed out way more dollars in food stamps than were humanly possible to eat unless you were really fat (presto chango@why so many food stamp recipients are obese), you buy in bulk, select high-end food items (like lobster and fancy steaks) or sell them (which is why that was so popular in the 80s and 90s). Now the money will barely get a family through the month because of the rise in food prices over the past two years. I get them only for myself because my son gets SSI (he’s severely autistic), but I use them for both of us. Almost $200 is gone in 10 days and that’s with me buying almost everything on sale.
There are a few problems with food stamps. One is something I just mentioned — buying from sales and mark-downs. Often times these are the foods that corporations or the store itself wants to fly off the shelves, either because the food is getting old or was damaged, the packaging changed, or something went wrong in the manufacturing process. I don’t think that’s the most healthy way to eat. The second problem is psychological. Most people know that government welfare in any form, which is a form of charity born out of pity not compassion, breeds feelings of worthlessness and apathy. And it doesn’t help when other Americans point fingers and say that they are “useless eaters”. Then Alex wonders why people ponder whether it’s a good idea to wipe out 80% of the world’s population, but look at the psychology behind taxpayers thinking they are supporting entitlements when they aren’t, borrowed money is, taxpayers only support the interest.
In America we have more food than any group of people could ever want or need. The government shouldn’t have to hand out food “stamps” (i.e. a card that tracks purchases and runs out when the gov’t says you’ve had enough). The free market should take care of the poor and hungry through private charities. The rest of the world longs to covet our land because of its ability to produce so much nutritious food, so we should charge more money selling it to them, and make sure our neighbors don’t have to go beg big brother for an EBT card we will all pay interest on until the bill comes due. We should all be ashamed of ourselves. I mean, even Saddam Hussein was smart enough to trade Iraqi oil for food.
And for the record, I’ll never feel bad for getting food stamps. First, JP Morgan Chase would need to give my grandmother back her dad’s millions of dollars and land they stole during WWII, then maybe I’ll worry about whether the tax money I’ve paid is higher than the entitlements I’ve received. My grandmother was getting food rations that barely bought bread in Germany while living in a bombed out mansion… so I don’t exactly feel guilty for not being able to escape the same tyranny that she ran from.

Most people use “karma” very loosely, as in “what goes around comes around”. Jesus said “As ye sow, so shall ye reap”. Basically the same thing. Except that those who believe in karma most often ignore God. It seems they just believe in some vague life force. But it’s the same destructive belief system that excludes God from their everyday life. It’s only one tentacle of the satanic hydra’s lie that says people can live any way they want, all roads lead to God, and God will basically ignore their sin and let them into heaven any way they want.
God is holy. We get what we ask for – free will. If we reverence God (the world culture and the NWO thumb their noses at God for the most part), and we want His intervention, provision and protection; then guess what? He will honor that request, through Jesus Christ. If we as as individual members of the human race say “no thanks, God. I’ll live life my own way and you stay out of it.”; He will honor that demand as well. Only whichever way we decide to go, when we die it is forever. People have no one to blame but themselves for where they end up.
Free will can be a great thing; as in the choice to honor God and treat our fellow human beings with dignity. Or it can be a real bummer, when people use that free will to treat their fellow human beings like garbage, even killing them. Does that kind of behavior make God sad and even angry? You bet. But if He wanted robots, forced into only doing the right things, then that would have robbed us of our free will and negated the image of God in which we were all created.
The wages of sin is death. Eternal death. People don’t go to hell and instantly burn up and cease to exist, though some would like to believe that. They think that a few seconds of agony and it’s all over is how it will turn out. So they use that as justification for living any way they choose.
I am a nobody. A beggar telling another where I found the bread. I am commanded to share the gospel (good news), that the payment for sin has been made by Jesus Christ and His shed blood on the cross. I don’t understand why sin has to be covered by blood. Perhaps because sin is so violent, blood is appropriate payment. I don’t understand so many things about God, but that is not necessary to believe what He said. He has revealed things to me through the Word, but do I understand it all? Not until I see Him face to face. We can ignore His words and the way to eternal life – or we can embrace it. I’ve chosen to embrace it.

America is also the most wasteful nation on earth, as long as there are dumpsters, fast food joints, soup kitchens, Food not Bombs organizations, etc, no one should go hungry… the irony is that, people living on an acre or more of land, will not eat the things in their own back yard that would allow them to survive. Look into Linda Runyon’s books and survival cards, and stuff… on Amazon… and if you are hungry, go look into dumpster diving… the fast food places throw out huge amounts of good food, that has sat out too long, most bakeries throw out day old bread, etc… times are hard don’t be afraid to look for creative ways to feed yourself, there is no shame in keeping yourself alive. Find someone who is a friend, that works in the fast food place, and have them volunteer to throw out the trash, and set it up for you, so that you get all the good food, in one bag, that they set out, instead of going hungry… I knew some people that did that during college, to keep their food bills down.

This is sad, but true. We DON’T care about our neighbors nearly as much as we say we do. Somewhere in a neighborhood close to each one of us a child goes to bed hungry. But do we make an effort to get to know our neighbors and their circumstances? NO, we don’t. We drive into the garage, shut the door and turn on the idiot box for the latest soap, football game, etc. We feel “safe” behind our locked doors, but it is only an illusion. The NWO love it because it feeds into their agenda. They WANT people hopeless, but those who have the keys to freedom (US), slip them into their pockets and pat them once in a while just to make sure they’re still there. We need to unlock the doors to our own lives and the lives of others. Sure there is risk. We might get our hearts broken, or we might just start a humanitarian revolution that would leave the NWO scratching their heads as they are left in the dust. Peace.

I have had to use the EBTCARD for awhile now. I did not want to go on it, but I had to humble myself, because I was full of pride, that is, false pride. I did not want my neighbors to know about it.
I went through a whole month without eating any food. It was really hard on my health. After becoming really dizzy, weak, and my sight becoming blurry, I decided I would ask for the EBT Food card.
I am glad I requested it. I would not be alive today if I refused it.
I shop at my neighborhood store, and yes, all my neighbors know I am on it. I also go to the food pantry once a month.
I only buy healthy foods. I read all the labels. At first, my food stamps, which is two hundred a month only lasted for about two weeks. I was really tired of being hungry the last week of the month, so I have been doing my best to grow my own food. Because of this I have more food to eat. And, I hope to fish at a nearby lake some day when I find out how, and when I have some fishing equipment.
I think it is really important to become self-sufficient.
All of you who are not on food stamps yet, may be some day. But the wise thing to do is to start now becoming self-sufficient. We all need to get off the grid in every way. It may be that the food stamp program will go under soon, or the benefits will decrease dramatically.
I think we need to go back to the way our grandparents lived. Some of you who are younger, I mean here your great grandparents. We do not need a lot of things that we buy today. You can live with out toilet paper. There are other ways to do things.
I am interested in getting a wood stove for heat, and one for cooking. I have to learn more about it.
Hey, if you have to take food stamps to feed yourself and your family, take them. Keep yourself healthy, so you can continue to fight the NWO and so you can continue to take care of your family. In the meantime, until your financial situation becomes better, just keep doing your best, and work towards making your family self-sufficient. Learn to hunt, fish, and do a lot of gardening.

They have to issue food stamps, otherwise we would have riots for food and dead laying in the streets from starvation. Need a meat wagon to go through all the neighborhoods picking up the dead every morning. Your city will have the stench of Calcutta.
I have used food stamps 2 times in 60 years, once in 1981 and just recently. In 1981 I used them about 2 months, found a job and got back to making money. Now, is another story, there are no jobs if you are older. In fact there are no jobs for anyone, job losses keep mounting. I hope I do not end up permanently on food stamps. The amount I do get does not last the month and buy the cheapest crap food I can find. I have probably “GAINED” weight because I no longer eat healthy.
Of course where I live there is only 1 super market chain left in town, they charge whatever they want.
All the greedy banksters, fradulent Walll Streeters and corrupt politicians should be imprisoned for treason and crimes against humanity.

Demand? Due to injuries I was homeless and eating our of dumpsters for 3 years before I broke down and got food stamps. Got me healthy enough to heal up enough to go back to work. Now I see if I didn’t get the money jp morgan would still get it anyways. So, why should the rich be getting richer while I starve? Whether “needy” American’s get it or not you are still gonna pay it! I don’t do drugs or drink and am stuck in a world that makes it hard to fish, hunt and live off the land because of fences and highways and greedy people like you allowing this corrupt gov. to continue raping. Yeah, Ron Paul was supposed to be for the people, and most of the people are unemployed, but it is the attitude of most, that if someone is unemployed, or on welfare, food stamps, etc, that it is their fault, and that they are lazy, slack asses, who brought that fate upon themselves. Government assistance is one of those things everyone can yell and scream about, but in this nation of plenty, it is shameful that our representatives would stand up, and give the keys to the treasury to the foreign banks, and then balk with self righteous indignation when the poor of the nation ask for assistance.

I need some food stamps, I had a heart attack and am unable to work. I already had Rheumatoid arthritis. I am not quite retirement age. No health insurance either and $60,000 in medical bills. I tried to get medicaid, so I could get medicine and a stent in my femoral artery so I could walk. If I could get better, I could work for a few more years. I have to prove I am disabled first per SS, it takes months and months and I will be homeless or dead soon is what the Gov. is banking on.

That’s the way it is for everyone. It took my dad years of fighting to get on disability. From his struggle, with several disabling aliments, I can tell you to find ONE THING that your attorney can concentrate on to focus the disability case on. If you have already been turned down once, get a LAWYER… most will work pro bono, until you get a settlement. As far as your medical bills go… send them 1 dollar a month, period. Medical bills do not appear on your credit report, and as long as you make an attempt to pay them something, there is very little they can do. Medicaid will require that you sign over your house, if you own one… read the paper work they throw at you. Good luck to you Nola, start building your support team now, to help you in your struggle.

I don’t see a recovery. In my town in FL, the largest employed shut their doors leaving hundreds unemployed. And, a lumber yard that was very busy when we moved here apx. 6 years ago and was obviously in business for many years just closed up shop about 2 months ago.
If I hear the media whores say one more time we’re recovering, I’m going to scream!

I would honestly not be surprised if the amount of illegals on Welfare/Foodstamps was close to 25-50% I live in an agri-city in California and of all the times I’ve had to go down to Social services office, I have yet to see 1 person waiting in the lobby that was not Mexican
I am by no means racist but seriously there would be jobs for Americans if labor jobs offered competitive wages instead of paying illegals under the table to avoid paying taxes. If you work for 8$/hour with no taxes coming out, you make the same as someone making 11$/hour who IS paying taxes.
Again if you live in the Salinas, California area and are seriously looking for work, me and the lady are looking for some employee’s that are awake and can also contribute to waking people up.

Yes which is pretty accurate considering if you HAVE a job your chances of getting food stamps are like 1% So this means either the unemployed # is completely off or there is a LOT of illegals on it.
