Norman Lear and the writers for All in the Family made Archie Bunker into reactionary stereotype. In the clip here, they attempt to extend that reactionary stereotype to gun control and the Second Amendment. In the process, the fictional character Archie Bunker speaks more truth than Lear and the writers probably intended.

True, an attempt at propaganda. Unfortunately they forgot that even overblown “reactionary” statements still have that earthy stench of truth, no matter how absurd a stretch you give them. It might be true that passing out pistols to every passenger is a bit extreme, but it is also very true that their would be no hope of accomplishing any goal other than suicide and a mess by anyone thinking of taking over the plane from on board it! It is a bit like curing athlete’s foot by amputation though, LOL! I’m pretty sure that were it ever attempted in such circumstances that a hijacking would result in many bystander casualties and a plane that looked like Swiss cheese at best!

Of those who carry outside the airport, how many of ~them~ have up and started shooting at the bad guys on the ground en masse?

Ergo you see: What happens on the ground would in all likelihood be the same scenario as in the air.

It would not be the same scenario as on the ground, you or I may not panic but I guarantee you that when you are trapped 20,000 feet in the air in a tuna can with 150 armed passengers people are going to panic! It’s human nature, fight or flight (no pun intended). Personally I do not want to be on a plane where everyone has a gun for the simple reason air-rage could turn deadly instead of hilarious.

Well, I don’t know if you remember when All in the Family was on, cbs I believe, there were just the “big three” propaganda outlets on TV and local independents, before cable. We watched Archie Bunker every Sunday I think, when I was a kid. Every week anyway. And Archie Bunker spoke the Gospel! He was unwittingly harsh and brutally truthful and damnit, I loved him!
The truth of the matter is, there ARE a WHOLE BUNCH of Archie Bunkers here today. Many, many more than the nwo has planned for!

Just a word to all of you writing to this forum. The few who appear to be serious about the topic under discussion are making valid points. Many ( Princess Zelda for one), seem to be here purely for the opportunity to disrupt and discredit the forum’s purpose. I agree with Alex that moderators are needed here to clean up the nonsense so the individuals that are not here to be helpful will simply go away. Since in society we have standards for behavior, might I suggest the following:
1. Follow the rules that Alex has set forth for this forum.
2. Refrain from using profane language, and use your spellchecker. (Poor grammar and spelling as well as profanity makes the writers here appear to be the uneducated boobs that our enemies paint us as being.)
3. Treat others belief system with respect, be it Christian or non-Christian.
This will make the message boards here different compared to almost any others on the net.
If you need any more confirmation of this, review how poor word choice and ignorance were used to discredit the truth on “All in the Family”.

I grew up during the 70’s. I watched Archie Bunker on TV, as painful as that was at times, simply because my dad enjoyed Archie saying the things that he felt needed to be said and weren’t in the media anywhere. The fact is, they portrayed anyone who felt that way as a middle aged, white, male racist, whose understanding of the world was limited at best. Any time he said anything that was true, it was wrapped in inept words, clumsy metaphors, and racist comments. The truth was still true, but it had been smeared and tainted by all the verbiage in which it was embedded. After that it was easy to call anyone a ignorant racist who spoke the truth because Archie held the same views, and everyone knew he was an ignorant racist. It was the guilt by association trick that is played in almost every propaganda campaign. If you can’t dispute the truth, associate it with someone disreputable.

There were not enough bodies recovered from any of the crash sites to be believable. I don’t know, I kinda disagree with the assertion that this episode was anti-gun propaganda. Archie was known as a pretty smart guy in the sitcom. They used him to poke fun at the rest of the cast. Archie always told it like it was and he was never concerned about being politically correct when it came to hot-button issues of that time, like gun control and affirmative action. That’s why the show was successful. People were laughing more at the fact at how right he was and how he wasn’t afraid to say it. If you listen closely, the television audience were actually clapping in agreement after Archie ended his editorial.

Some may think it’s extreme to arm airline passengers–but I don’t.
Of course, Archie Bunker’s idea of the airlines proactively passing them out to passengers is hypothetical, but I would seriously be in favor of allowing passengers to carry of firearms. I don’t believe the Second Amendment is nullified when you leave the ground.
And to you hoplofobes that wet your pants when someone talks about guns on planes…
The notion of a bullet causing a plane to crash and burn is ridiculous. If a bullet (or even several bullets) goes through a plane’s fuselage, it won’t even depressurize the plane. Airplanes already have a whole in them that helps regulates pressure as it opens and closes wider or narrower. If bullets punctured the side of a plane, that whole would just close in more. Even if you shot a window out, the plane would depressurize, but there’s oxygen on planes, and the plane could make an emergency landing at the nearest airport.
I’ll put my personal feelings on it this way: myself being armed and knowing other passengers are armed does not make me feel less safe than having my bags rifled through and body scanned by people with 70 IQs.

If criminals shooting people is going to be the casus belli for ever expanding gun control for all then how about bringing back some old school draconian penalties for criminal acts involving guns. In all seriousness if you want a legal deterrent you cannot get any better than public executions. And none of this lethal injection crap either. I mean hangings, beheadings and other equally or more gruesome and humiliating modes of execution. With the methods of investigation available and the scientific tools for investigating it can be fairly well established whether or not a person is culpable. Once guilt has been absolutely confirmed beyond any doubt then enforce the sentence publically.
It won’t immediately turn back the clock on gun control but in time it will certainly eliminate the criminal acts that justify implementing it as people who would be “at risk” of committing gun related violence would likely tend to want to avoid a frightening and demeaning public death as most of them are selfish cowards anyhow. I think that as the tide turns those who push for gun control would let their guard down and slowly this constitutional right could possibly be reclaimed.
For me I’m not really a big fan of guns, particularly hand guns, because there are people who do own them, sell them and/or manufacture them who are completely irresponsible and are all too ready to let them fall into the hands of those who should not have them out of love for the almighty dollar. That being said I know that it is only in a perfect world where such things as guns are not required and this is far from a perfect world making guns a necessary evil.

Archi Bunker was the image of the ignorant reactionary, scared American. His character was a brilliant mixture of clinging to the old school values and illustrating the need for the changes that were happening in society at the time. The old coot who would never change until the day they died. And few of them did change. We have several modern day Archie Bunkers. Just look at Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, and Randy Marsh. Reactionary idiots, all of them, but they effectively illustrate the need for the changes they rage against and then inevitably accept.

The Founders of this nation declared that every able-bodied male between the ages of 16 and 50 own a firearm, know how to use it, and be a member of their state militia. Well I think there should be Gun Control – I think the people should Control their Guns, like wear them on their hips in plain sight,, so all them there criminals can see they’ll be out numbered, even the convinence store clerks should Display a M-16 or sawed off Shot Gun, maybe a Howlitzer or something,, and Bank Tellers too !!! The attempt by government to disarm the American people is a compelling concern that HAD to be counteracted lest someone actually WAKE UP. RIDICULE is a favorite tool but here it is presented in an art form, as the listener concludes “the joke’s on Archie and the conspiracy garbage he is sputtering”. The idea is to neutralize the opposing idea that Americans need to have access to self defense as guaranteed in the 2nd Amendment.
Since Archie Bunker is no longer a regular show, I wonder when this episode was designed. Guss the gun control issue has been ongoing.

What a coincidence! I was going through some old VCRs of All in the Family last weekend and transfering them to DVD and this episode was one of them! My husband and I don’t remember this editorial from Archie when it first aired, but we were both commenting about how right Archie is. We weren’t happy about the way he was made to look like an idiot. That’s what the theme of the show was about though. Before I “woke up”, I used to be a Democrat. I blindly thought that they were more humanitarian and cared more about the little guy. Now, I’m neither Democrat nor Republican. I trust virtually NO politians.

On many of the episodes Norman Lear inadvertently portrayed Archie as the rational person vs. meathead /issue. My favorite one was when the family were victims of an armed home burglary, and the black robbers actually liked Archie even though they thought he was a bigot and mocked and disdained Meathead,
“Do you see what we have here, we got ourselves a real live LIB-RAL”.
Or something to that effect.
The robbers were well played by Cleavon Little and Desmond Wilson.
