10 Surveillance Cameras Monitor Skid Row

AP | September 15 2006

If you're passing through Los Angeles'skid row area, smile. You may be on camera.

A $200,000 network of police surveillance cameras was unveiled Thursday in the downtown district.

The ten cameras being placed at various downtown locations are remote controlled with pan, tilt and zoom capabilities. They'll be operated by officers at the LAPD's Central Division.

Surveillance cameras are already in use in MacArthur Park, the downtown fashion district and along Hollywood Boulevard.

City Councilwoman Jan Perry said they've been "an effective deterrent of crime throughout the city."

The Skid Row camera network was underwritten by a donation by property owners group, The Central City East Association.

Association chief Estela Lopez said they're being installed to "help the police do their job."
