Surveillance cameras for Sequoia high schools?
Sequoia Union High School District school board could decide Wednesday on $500,000 project

Palo Alto Online | October 17 2006

Against a backdrop of recent violence on school campuses nationwide, trustees of the Sequoia Union High School District may decide Wednesday to spend up to $500,000 to install surveillance cameras at its four high schools: Menlo-Atherton, Woodside, Sequoia and Carlmont.

Preliminary installation of cameras at Menlo-Atherton "have proven successful, and staff recommends expanding security surveillance to all sites," a background report on the agenda item stated.

"It has been a long-term district goal to be able to monitor campuses with video security," the report said. "Given the recent events across the country, it seems prudent to move forward at this time."

The funding would come from school-improvement bond funds and would not impact the annual budget, the report said.

The board meets at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Birch Room of the district office at 480 James Ave. in Redwood City.

Also on the agenda:

The district was awarded a federal grant of about $550,000 for a three-year program to improve physical education at the schools.

The board will hear a report on the effort to verify residency of district students, including how the process is working.

Last summer, the Sequoia district granted a two-year charter to Summit Preparatory Charter High School. Sequoia trustees are scheduled to discuss the district's entitlement to a seat on Summit's governing board.
