The Live Earth Global Warming Fraud

JBS | July 9, 2007
Dennis Behreandt

If global warming is such a threat, why did Al Gore and a who's who list of left-wing celebrities repeatedly fly around the globe this weekend to put on the Live Earth climate change propaganda fest?

Powered by Al Gore, all around the globe on July 7 concerts were held to help raise awareness (and dollars) for the fight against the global scourge of climate change. The concerts were part of the Live Earth spectacle organized by Al Gore. But were the Live Earth concerts themselves environmentally friendly? Eliot Van Buskirk at Wired News' "Listening Post" blog wonders as well.

Van Buskirk, boiling down the essentials from a longer report in the UK's Daily Mail, notes the following:

"The event's carbon footprint was 34,722 tons (82,122 tons if you factor in the television audience).

"Many of the stars, through their extensive touring on private jets, have carbon footprints up to 200 times higher than that of the average brit.

"Radiohead, normally a friend to environmental causes, refused to appear.

"John Legend is featured in a Lexus advert, while Sheryl Crow's hit Everyday Is A Winding Road is used to sell Subaru 4WDs."

That's just for starters. The Daily Mail has a few more inconvenient truths about the Live Earth spectacle:

Madonna was one of the premier performers at the event, yet "Waiting in the garage at home, she has a Mercedes Maybach, two Range Rovers, an Audi A8 and a Mini Cooper S."

The multiple concerts featured "more than 150 performers jetting around the world to appear in concerts from Tokyo to Hamburg.... Matt Bellamy, front man of the rock band Muse, has dubbed it 'private jets for climate change'."

The multiple concerts were certain to generate huge amounts of garbage. "An event of this size at Wembley - which holds 65,000 at a rock concert, will generate around 59 tonnes of waste," said Dr. Andrea Collins, a sustainability expert at Cadiff University. "That is largely composed of the rubbish from food and drink consumption." The trash from the multiple Live Earth concerts will end up in landfills around the world.

All this for a theory that a betting man would be tempted to say is little more than hot air. That's exactly what Professor Scott Armstrong has done in betting that global warming predictions are way off base.

A professor of marketing at the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, according to the online journal Spiked, Armstrong is an internationally known expert on forecasting methods. In his research on forecasting, he has found that global warming forecasts like those cited by Al Gore and developed by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) frequently violate the principles of forecasting. In fact, as Spiked reports, Armstrong and research partner Kesten Green of Australia's Monash University found that one frequently cited IPCC report "violated 72 of the principles of forecasting."

With climate change forecasts based on such shoddy work, why not bet that global warming is a hoax? That's just what Armstrong has done. According to Spiked, Armstrong has "faxed and posted (to be on the safe side) his ‘Global Warming Challenge' to Gore. He challenged the former US vice-president to a 10-year bet in which both parties will put forward $10,000. Gore would put his money on his forecasts that temperature will rise dangerously in the coming decade, while Armstrong will put his money on what is referred to as the ‘naïve model': that is, that temperatures will probably stay the same in the coming years.‘"

It's a safe bet that a decade from now, Armstrong's $10,000 will still be safe and snug in his bank account.
