Perils of smoking are discussed on World No Tobacco Day
CBS News | May 31, 2005
ALBANY, N.Y. The state Health Department plans to release the results of a youth and adult smoking survey as part of a global anti-smoking day today.
"World No Tobacco Day" is sponsored by the World Health Organization. Organizers say that every year, tobacco kills 3-and-a-half (m) million people around the world. That's ten-thousand people a day.
It is predicted that by the year 2020, tobacco will become the leading cause of death and disability, killing more than 10 (m) million people annually. That's more deaths than H-I-V, tuberculosis, maternal mortality, motor vehicle accidents, suicide, and homicide combined.
A World Bank study estimates the global health care costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses at 200 (b) billion dollars per year.
At a World No Tobacco Day event at the Empire State Plaza, more than 8-thousand postcards collected from New Yorkers will be presented to legislators to show support for the state's expanded Clean Indoor Air Act.
