EU approves bird flu vaccinations
London Independent | February 22, 2006
A European Union veterinary expert panel has approved limited preventative bird flu vaccination plans presented by France and the Netherlands.
The decision follows fears the deadly H5N1 strain could spread further.
The panel said the plans were authorised only for specific birds in specific regions, "and will be subject to rigorous surveillance and control requirements," the EU said in a statement from Brussels.
Experts and EU governments are divided whether vaccinating poultry provides adequate protection against the deadly H5N1 strain.
