Virus Tests On UK Birds

SkyNews | February 20, 2006

Tests are being carried out on a number of dead birds found across Britain over the weekend as the country remains on high alert over the possible spread of bird flu.

The tests follow confirmation that a duck which died of the virus in France had the lethal H5N1 strain.

A spokesman said nine swans were sent for tests over the weekend after members of the public called a helpline.

The swans were found in Bury St Edmonds, Winchester, Preston, Shrewsbury, Thirsk and Hertfordshire.

"All the tests have so far been negative but testing continues," the spokesman added.

The British Veterinary Association said the heightened awareness of avian flu meant anybody finding a dead bird is likely to report it.

"A one-off dead bird isn't necessarily something to worry about, but if you come across several that's more serious," said a spokesman.

"Given the results from France, caution is the word."

Animal Health Minister Ben Bradshaw said Britain has a contingency plan and is well prepared.

The killer bird flu virus has also recently been found in swans in Germany and Austria.

Globally, avian flu has killed 91 people since 2003.

In all cases the victims picked up the virus from close contact with poultry.

But there are fears the virus could mutate into a form that is easily passed from human to human, leading to a flu pandemic that could kill millions.
