NEW YORK - A small corporate jet slid off the runway at the Teterboro, New Jersey, airport, crossed a highway and crashed into a building, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said on Wednesday. ABC News reported one person died and 11 others were injured.
Diane Spitaliere, the FAA spokeswoman, said the plane attempted to take off at 7:20 a.m. EST/1220 GMT, veered off the end of a runway, crashed through a fence and crossed the highway before hitting a building.
"The preliminary report is that 12 people were on board. We don't know the status of people on board. The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) is in the process of launching an investigation," Spitaliere said.
ABC News reported that one person had died in the crash and 11 people were injured. The network previously had said two were missing.
A spokesman for the Bergen County police said Route 46, which leads into Manhattan, remained closed.
Video from the scene showed at least one damaged car.
NBC quoted an eyewitness as saying he had seen four people exit the plane after the crash, including two pilots, one of whom appeared to have a broken leg.
An unidentified witness told the network: "I just saw a big explosion, smoke, flames."
The witness initially thought a school next door to the warehouse had been hit.
"Chaos, flames, smoke, it was mass confusion," he said.
The FAA said the plane was headed for Chicago's Midway airport and was a Challenger CL-600 registered in Dallas, Texas, to Alliance LLC.
