China rewards one-child families
UPI | February 28, 2005
BEIJING -- China is experimenting with increased cash rewards to single child families, the official China Daily reported Monday.
The paper reported the results of a pilot program launched last April in 15 Chinese cities that gave cash rewards to rural couples who were willing to have only one boy or two daughters. |

According to the new policy, each of the couples could get at least 600 yuan or $72 every year when they are over 60 years old.
The policy provides reassurance to couples in rural areas who worry about their old age, the paper said. In 2004, 4,781 farmers in Chengde benefited from the program, receiving rewards of 2.87 million yuan or $350,000, it said.
The new policy appears to be a success, the China Daily said. Encouraged by it, 2,283 rural couples in Chengde voluntarily decided to have only one child and more than 3,400 others delayed their plans to have a second child, the paper said.
