Spain registers almost 700,000 immigrants

Spain has granted nearly 700,000 work and residency permits to its immigrant population, Spanish Labor Minister Jesus Caldera said.
Those registering had to prove they had been living in Spain prior to August 2004.
Thousands of last-minute applicants lined up for hours during the weekend before the registry offices finally closed, El Mundo reported Monday.
The program started in February and ended Saturday night, drawing thousands of aliens living in Spain to registration offices to submit proof of residence -- paid bills, paycheck stubs and the like -- to be granted legal residence.
