Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday presented his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez with a medal of honour for his "outstanding efforts against imperialism," Fars news agency reported.
The "First Grade Medallion of Honour of the Islamic Republic of Iran" was presented to Chavez at Tehran University in the presence of Iranian students and teachers.
Chavez's staunch support of Iran and his rejection of anti-Iranian resolutions at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were other reasons for the award, Fars noted.
Chavez arrived in Tehran on Saturday for a two-day visit and has held talks with Ahmadinejad and met Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"Mr Chavez is the flag-holder of justice in Latin America and his closeness to the people, his constant efforts to seek freedom and his decisive fight against imperialism are just a few outstanding characteristics," Ahmadinejad said at the ceremony.
He further termed his Venezuelan counterpart "a very nice man and one of the few political personalities whose words are equal to his actions."
"I thank God that Mr Chavez is not only my brother but also the brother of the Iranian nation and all other freedom-seeking nations in the world," Ahmadinejad said.
Then two sides were expected later Sunday to sign agreements in the fields of energy, petrochemicals, urban planning, mass production building and banking. Another bilateral project is Iran's engagement in a 8,000-kilometre gas pipeline from Venezuela to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.
