Russian New Intercontinental Missile Fails in Test Launch

Mos News | September 8 2006

A test launch of a new-generation Russian intercontinental ballistic missile ended in failure on Thursday when it crashed into the sea minutes after being fired, Russian news agencies are quoted by Xinhua.

The Bulava missile, fired from an underwater position in the White Sea, deviated from its trajectory and fell into the sea several minutes after its launch by the Dmitri Donskoy submarine at 7:50 p.m. (1550 GMT). The missile was due to hit a target on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The Defense Ministry confirmed the launch was abortive.

The submarine-launched Bulava missile can carry up to 10 independently-targeted warheads and has a range of 8,000 kilometers. Four previous launches of the missile were successful.

The Russian navy wants to complete tests of the missile in 2006 and deployment on submarines is expected to start in 2008
