As firearms sales surge, Democrats drop assault weapons ban

As firearms sales in the United States hit new highs, the Obama Administration and Democrats in Congress are squelching talk of a renewal of the assault weapons ban passed by Congress that lapsed in 2004, saying they don’t want a distraction from their agenda and don’t have the votes in Congress.
Seven million people have applied for criminal background checks since November in an effort to buy guns, according to the FBI. That figure doesn’t include Virginia, whose gun shows don’t require any background checks.
The buying bonanza has stripped some stores almost bare of assault weapons and yielded a national ammunition shortage.
As gun sales blossom, Democrats’ interest in regulating gun sales appear to be waning, despite the recent spate of high-profile gun violence.
Two recent reports have fingered the Obama Administration and the assault weapons ban’s most ardent supporter in Congress — Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) — as putting off any effort to regulate high-powered weapons. Congressional officials told a reporter in comments published Saturday that Obama and top White House aides have all but abandoned a push for tighter gun control, indicating they can’t stomach a fight with the National Rifle Association when they’re focused on other issues.

“The president supports the Second Amendment, respects the tradition of gun ownership in this country, and he believes we can take common-sense steps to keep our streets safe,” Ben LaBolt, a White House spokesman said.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose effort to extend the assault weapons ban failed in the Senate 9-80 in 2004, signaled on 60 Minutes Sunday that she won’t currently pursue the ban’s renewal. Feinstein authored the original ban, which was in place from 1994 until 2004.
She said she “agrees” that an effort to renew the ban now would pose a distraction to Obama’s agenda and spark a culture war.
“So you are going to hold off?” 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl asked.
“That’s correct,” Feinstein said. “I’ll pick the time and the place, no question about it.”
Feinstein said there isn’t support for the assault weapons ban in Congress. Pro-gun Democrats picked up seats in the last election.
“The National Rifle Association essentially has a stranglehold on the Congress,” Feinstein said.
White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was a prominent advocate for the bill while serving in the House, but now appears to be silent.
“It’s weird,” Peter Hamm, the communications director for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told Newsweek. “When you see people like [Attorney General] Eric Holder or Hillary Clinton or [White House chief of staff] Rahm Emanuel become muted on this issue, you feel like you want to call up a friend and say, ‘What’s up?’ “
Gun control advocates blame Americans’ disapproval of tighter gun control on misleading efforts by the National Rifle Association and gun advocates to suggest that President Obama would “take away” citizens’ guns.
“That extreme position apparently prompted a man, who told friends he was afraid the government would take his guns away, to shoot three police officers in Pittsburgh last week,” notes the Guardian. “But more commonly such views are boosting gun sales, from Ohio to Texas and from Wyoming to Virginia.”

They won’t ban fiat fraud because then they’d have to ban bank usuary. For example when the manufacturing, health, service industry and other sections of the economy see growth of 1 or 2% a year if they’re lucky, the banking and financiail services industry see +25% growth and higher. Out of the 14 sections of the economy, in 2006 the banking / finiancial sector made over 1/3 of the entire profit generated in the United States for the entire economy.
Sure it’s all imaginary paper that has no value, but the moment they eliminate usuary and fiat currency fraud, all the real money based on hard currency will start to get disseminated to people who work and own real local businesses, instead of being able to be automagically moved around the globe with the magical click of a button like they do now, allowing these fraudulent ‘business’ alites to undermine the real economy and labor. They’re terrified of a real economy breaking-out, it would instantly increase your real take-home pay massively, and completely undermine their control over our lives. And nothing scares the ‘elites’ more than that.

I don’t believe they care about “moral authority”; they are waiting until we are not strong – 30% unenployment, not able to feed our families nor shelter them – then they will do a “guns for food” program and they won’t need to “invade” us then. This is why we ALL need to gain personal independence at home when it cames to growing our own food, coming up with other means of providing electricity (e.g., solar, Tesla technologies, etc.) and water, and learning to work with our neighbors again (e.g., coops). If we band together locally, then they have less of a grip on us at the Federal level. If our states take back their sovereignty, then it will be much more difficult for them to put their plans into action. And if they do anyway, then we can just tell the Fed govt. to f*** off and leave us alone, we are keeping our own taxes and resources here locally, and what are you poing to do about it?!

One small win, thats a good thing. But I am sure they will let the gorilla out of the crate when its the “right time and place”. But honestly folks, lets call it what it realy is. I truely believe that they only reason they are dropping it… for now is that they fear even more states reasserting states rights, and any legislation that will push the backs of the american people to the wall. they know that at this point we will push back.
Patriots, look at this as a chance to “relax” just a little in your efforts to prepair so that prices have a chance to come back down. gun ban or no gun ban, the course had already been set.

Exactly right…eternal vigilance! We should all be watching Govtrack on the internet to watch what bills are being introduced in to Congress each week. We should all pick one area of interest, such as gun control, health foods, healthcare, 1st Amendment, etc., and then report back to the rest of us when something bad comes up. AS long as we have the internet, we have a better way to get intel and to disseminate it quickly. What happens when it’s gone, I’m not sure. But while we have it, let’s use it to our advantage!

Now is the time to organize for the next elections. What is stopping them according to the article is that they don’t have the votes in congress to get a bill through. We need to keep it that way, and while we’re at it stop the rest of their plans by voting in more congressmen like Ron Paul. So, this is not a chance to “relax” but instead to intensify efforts. With all due respect, “One small win, that’s a good thing”, is a bone and trial balloon. Things crucial to the Agenda like fraudulent elections, devastating home and abroad, bailout, etc. will get through. “There’s more than one way to skin a cat!” Remember the bailout initially appeared to be a win. But it was snatched with total disregard for the People and law.
“The best thing one can do is to let you know where you stand with them.” It’s quite obvious that the traitors/minions are more beholding/terrified of their handlers than the People. And until that changes relaxing is not an option.

I agree about the shortages. I have been reading a book by Russ Baker about the Bush clan, and it mnetioned that Remington Arms used to be owned by part of the Rockeffeller family. Does anyone know if it still is? This might possibly explian why it doesn’t seem like they are ramping up production of ammo even thought the demand has skyrocketed. Anyone know any inside info on this?

Oh please come and try to take my semi-automatic rifle. Almost the same rifle (just without three round burst) that was given to me to patrol and reign terror in Baghdad. Every household in Iraq can have one Fully Automatic AK-47. We cant. Whats wrong with that picture?
Sadly it took being in the service three years and Baghdad 15 months to be realize what the government is really up to. And I take pride on waking up soldiers and friends.

Except for suppressive fire, which is unrealistic for a citizen (unless you can afford that much ammo), a fully auto is of no real use.

I live in Virginia, my husband just bought 3 guns at a gun show and they DID do background checks. In fact, he purchased a S&W 9mm for me that can’t be picked up until later this month because he bought an M11/9 less than 30 days before the gun show (which is apparently considered a “handgun”) and you can’t buy more than 1 handgun in a 30 day time frame. So I don’t know if that’s a mistake in the article, or the law varies within the state.

I too live in Virginia.. my husband goes to each and every gun show… the 30 day rule applies only if you buy directly from a dealer…. but if you buy from an individual there are no checks or waiting time…but I thought they lifted the 30 day waiting … maybe not .. you are right about background checks takes about 15 mins through the state police

When my husband came home I asked him about this and he clarified it for me…the checks apply if you buy a NEW gun, if you buy a used gun it’s pretty much cash & carry. All of the guns he bought were new, so that explains it. Although that “rule” doesn’t make much sense to me.

VA has an exile on anyone having a gun whether coming or going unless you have a concealed permit from a state VA recognizes…. the gun shows you can buy from individuals and avoid the check also… permit to carry only if concealed.. BUT we do have open carry … which I personally love…

Yeah its sick. Almost half of the people that did not re-enlist shed some hope of soldiers realizing that what they are being forced to do is wrong.
However here is a great example of how they want to violate posse comitatus.
In the final months of last year when I was preparing to ETS (get the hell out of the army), my company was briefed that we may be deployed in the Texas to provide “assistance” to hurricane Ike. Luckily it did not happen but being told this pissed me off.

Like change the tapistry of our banking and debt and change the value of the dollar, as everyone hangs on to their devalued dollar. In the end, this type of equation has the same effect as taking money from the people that earned.
So with guns, there is something going on, like pandemic or emergency legislation that will allow them to confiscate guns, or they will declare that all veterans and truthers have some form of PTSD and demand they can’t own guns along with their family members living in the same house. With all the recent data mining I am sure they will come up with a listr that includes 70% of the US population that will be disqualified from the right to own a gun, for one reason or another. That and because of the registration requirement, they will know who has them and where the guns are located.
More than one way to skin a cat and I am sure they are up to no good on this issue!

Don’t trust the NRA, they would love to see the govt take your guns. If you have to join something, join the Gun Owners of America. The NRA has been compromised. I think they have come to realize that banning firearms is futile at this point. They intend to attack us with Bio-weapons and flu. They didn’t dig up and mass produce the Spanish Flu for nothing. In considering things further, I would not be surprised if they were working on new law that would require all guns to be replaced with newer models that would come with an RFID transmitter that keeps a constant GPS location and count of rounds fired, along with GPS round tragectory data. That and the new models would come with a radio frequency lock down mode, making it impossible to fire during certain radio frequency transmission.
Or even sneeker, gunpowder or firing caps that can be disabled using radio remote nano-tech additives to the mix. Anyone familiar with amino and protein resonance frequencies can invision that as a potential reality.
One thing for sure, they are up to no good and are always pushing the limit. It is absolutely imperative that we wake up We The People, so that everyone realizes the true meaning of the 2nd amendment, which is for the citizens to have and bear arms to defend against tyranical government should it arise. Once everyone understands that essential aspect of the 2nd amendment, they will not be able to get support for other sneeker means to disarm the citizenry, as I have mentioned.
If they ever figure out a way to put an additive in gunpowder that turns it off with a specific radio frequency, we will be in some really deep s--- with these control freaks.

The pre-positioning of burial containers all around the country is an indicator that these demons from hell have something in mind for most of us that we are not going to be willing to accept for ourselves and our families. At some point they are going to make a move to herd us into those hellish camps and crematories. As long as they keep the fighting going, I am not sure that they really care who has weapons. I keep hearing that ammunition production is being reduced, so they may think that this will take care of the problem with the armed public. However, without an assist from a biological attack, I think that there is already sufficient ammunition distributed to eliminate all of the useful idiots that they can bring together against us. Also there are more weapons in war than guns, some of them being more dreadful than looking at the wrong end of a rifle. The test will come when they demand gun registration and we the people tell them no thanks we will keep track of our own property. Stay cool and make them show their hand before we respond.
I don’t think that these fools realize that any force committed against the American people is going to start by being surrounded. They don’t seem to appreciate that many are very knowledgeable in weapons technology, many are combat trained, many are very dedicated to defending themselves and families. These people cannot control Iraq or Afghanistan and they think they can overcome a dedicated force in CONUS fighting for their freedom.

Nothing “prompts” someone to shoot police officers. Well, maybe if the officers are threatening him, but outside that, the only reason someone would have to shoot an officer is that they are nutty, loopy, crazy, whackos. I hate how these anti-gun nuts try to trick people into disarming themselves by suggesting that guns lead to police shootings. No one ever thinks to point out the fact that if the POLICE didn’t have guns, they wouldn’t be able to SHOOT the crazy whackos that go on killing sprees. As soon as a shot is fired, the first thing an unarmed person tends to do is run screaming to a telephone to call 9-1-1…in order to get the police on the scene. Why? Because the police have guns.
Guns aren’t just for slaughtering people. When used responsibly, they SAVE lives, sometimes without even firing a shot. This is probably why Jesus said, “If any man have not a sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.”

There are only two things that deter crime:
1]Harsh laws that are enforced by honest Judges
2]Armed citizens
The police only take reports and hopfully investigate criminal activity instead of spending their day checking out your wife or girl-friend or beating some unlucky drunk to a pulp or confiscating stuff that they want. There is no “CSI” for poor victims or middle-class victims.
The only U.S. citizens that should be restricted from posessing a firearm should be “Traffic-Cops” If you speed or fail to yield and get caught then a guy writes you aticket with a pen not a pistol or billy-club.
People that desire to impose force or authority on others are dangerous and imbalanced. Stay away from them or you might eventually have to use whatever you have on them. Because of their chosen occupation they will most likly be in fairly good shape and know some maneuvers that would give them the upper-hand. I suggest a S&W 357 unless there are others in close proximity[else thy could be injured by the exiting projectil] otherwise a .22 to the head will do just fine.[never use a .25 or .32] they somtimes only make a dent and would make the idiot just a raving mad idiot.
Who woodah though? that the U.S. would have to once again be like the “old days” only this time it being the U.S. govt. as the enemy against the people?

Think about it.
Most likely they will 1. Educate all our kids, and in 20 years the people will willingly give up their guns.
Why are they not going after them now? Possible reasons – National Security.
1. There are so many Guns and gun owners/ex military with the “cold dead hands attitude” that it’s just unworkable to require people to register or turn in Guns. It would be disobedience on a large scale.
2. Combined with the economic mess, it could be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back.
3. Combined with the facts that
a. The U.S. is in a vulnerable economic and therefore strategic position.
b. We are entangled in Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – and the military is already strained.
c. We could be in a war with Iran in the near future.
d. Pakistan could fail, in which case the U.S. (And India) will be S.O.L with nuclear armed Islamic Radicals.
e. The strategic political situation with N. Korea is semi- unstable.
f. China has a huge cash surplus, and is building up their military.
g. Putin is a pain in the butt.
h. If Israel (or anyone else) Bombs Iran, would could easily be in WWIII
Basically, the Fed Gov has bigger fish to fry. A move to disarm citizens would further destabilize the nation, which is in an already vulnerable strategic posture. If a move to disarm citizens led to the dissolution of the union (which we know the Russians and Chinese want), then the world would easily fall under the heavy hands of these regimes.
So, be eternally vigilant. However, I don’t think the Fed Gov can afford the risk of disarming the American people right now. However, they have done dumber things. With Mexico falling apart, and WWIII possible, an armed American is the Fed Gov’s best friend in case of an invasion.

Get an engine lathe and a Bridgeport style milling machine and learn something about chemistry. You will be amazed at what you can do once these arts are learned.

Machining is diffucult head sweat work that i am not great at but I can do it and you might be one of those people that have a knack for it. You can ban the guns you can dry up the ammo supply but free enterprise will beat you. In the people will do what they want and all the institutions and machinary that have been set against the people will crumble and consume themselve becuase in our genes we do not feel the desire to stand on someone elses neck.

Perhaps if Congress would pass laws that support the constitution, rather than dilute it, people wouldn’t be so skeptical of them. For instance if they passed a law with teeth to go after real criminals, like the ones in LA after Katrina who violated the 2nd and 4th amendment rights of law abiding citizens by going door to door confiscating legally owned firearms, they would allay many fears of their ever increasing tyrannical/big brotherly ways.

These servile flatterers and promoters of chaos are quite savvy with their lying tongues. But for whatever reasons they got the message, if that’s in fact the case, a victory has been achieved, big or small never the less a victory. However; remain on guard and informed. Read between the lines when these bottom feeders speak out, then you’ll know what they’re really up to. Keep buying your guns and ammo and exercise your Rights, remember it was the unprecedented spike in gun sales that has them second guessing their sick agenda. PS, Mr. “Lippy-air” of the NRA was/is the NRA’s counter part in the writing and compromise BS with the “Assault Weapons Ban” that Joe Biden brags about. The two of them went behind closed doors and screwed the rest of us. The ring knockers are trying to set us up again by constantly mentioning the planned oposition that sold us out the last time.(California too if I have to remind you) Gun Owners of America is a NO COMPROMISE organization. Join it and make it evan stronger if you want to have a voice. The ring knockers in the real Board of Directors of the NRA is the group that set up the Veterans Disarmament Bill. Last year the NRA helped to get it passed by NOT informing any progun member of congress when it was brought forward on a “no bussiness day”.

Here’s a little story I picked up today from the local news. Only thing I want to point out is the “assault-type pistol”. Are they now saying that pistols assault too? And thus are “EVIL” black pistols! Haahaahaa! Our prisons should be full of ak-47s and the like for where it not for the evil assault weapons, criminals wouldn’t have anything to do. I bet it was nothing more than a cheap Bersa or Lorsen .380.

I agree with everyone here, particularly some emergency that will justifiy government confiscation of ALL firearms. But we arrived at this point via divide and conquer. I think that the way government will win is by expanding the ‘prohibited persons’ list. Gun shops and members of the gun community obey these decrees, not laws, that eminate from DC just to continue exercising their ‘rights’ which in the end amount to nothing more than privileges. If something like fundamental right to self-defense can be compromised under the 1968 GCA, regulated’ as Obama recently stated that the States can do, or whimiscally taken away by politicians like Clinton for domestic violence or child safety issues, then YOU don’t have any rights. There has never been any power system of government in the history of man that cared for the people, albeit a small numbered elite; governments anywhere only care about those things that keep them in power. Your support….

I think that senetors and congressmen and presidents that don’t believe in the second ammendment, and attack it they way these antigunners have been doing for years don’t deserve a seat in our style of government. The constitution says” the right of the people to bear arm shall not be infringed. Period. Now what part of “NO” don’t they understand? They took an oath to defend the constitution and then they decide they are above the law? Those people need to be cut loose marked for their stand and go back to civilian life and not allowed in American politics again.
