An astronaut has broken the record for the longest amount of time spent in space becoming the world’s most experienced space flier.

Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, 57, has spent a record 879 days in space throughout his career as he return from his latest mission from the International Space Station.

The former station commander returned on Saturday from his fifth spaceflight landing in central Kazakhstan.

He broke the record of six-time flier Sergei Krikalev, who has a career total 803 days in orbit.
