Sweltering in the sun some five months after they split the vote in snowbound Unity with 107 votes each, the two Democratic candidates vowed to work together.

Mrs Clinton, who was narrowly defeated, said the 214 votes they shared in Unity and the 36 million votes across the country would all be votes for change.

Mr Obama said that Mrs Clinton and her husband Bill would be essential in his general election campaign against Senator John McCain, the Republican nominee.

“I am proud to call her a friend and I know how much we need both Bill and Hillary Clinton as a party and as a country in the months and years to come,” Mr Obama said.

As their first joint rally ended, the former First Lady’s aides said that the New York senator and former president had each contributed the maximum $2,300 they could to Mr Obama’s campaign.
