His argument is not logical. If immigrants learn English, why do our children need to learn Spanish? The truth is than many immigrants never learn English. 70% of the people in the city in which I live are hispanic. It is very common to find people who have lived here for 30 or 40 years or more and still cannot speak English. My inlaws came here in 1952 and they barely speak English. Let’s be honest and call a spade a spade… our children need to learn Spanish because the government is going to continue to allow unrestrained immigration and many immigrants will not learn English. Therefore, in order to function and be able to make a living, our children need to be bilingual.

While I personally do not trust Obama, I actually agree with him that Americans should have to learn more than one language. After all, Canadians have to learn English and French, while in Europe and other places, learning three or more languages is not uncommon.
However, while it does make sense that Spanish should be the second language taught in American scools, especially in the southern states, I believe some flexibility should be offered, depending on the region. For example, the western states such as California might want to put a greater emphasis on Asian languages while in the northeast, French (especially in New England, where over six million franco-Americans reside) and/or German may be more appropriate.
So now what? I have to learn every language in the known world in case I travel to the countries that use a language other than English? Wow Obama. I live in America. I speak English. If I go to another country, I will buy a translator. I think he is right. knowing more than one language gives you a different prospective to how you interpret the world. it is like being able to look at things from two points of view (or more depending on how many languages you learn)which allows you to have a much better analysis of things. I think that learning another language should not be a forced undertaking, but it should be something that everyone should engage in doing, as a matter of norm, because of the intellectual benefits of it and better understanding of your fellow human beings.

It is disgusting that Americans are still debating the “second language” issue when other people in Latin America and Europe are increasingly becoming trilingual.
Learning Spanish is good for those who live on the U.S.-Mexico Border and metroplexes with a large “Latino” population like Miami, Chicago, New York etc. Promoting a second language like Spanish doesn’t mean it has to be across the board; it’s the use-value of the idea that should be understood. Areas like Louisiana could benefit from learning French, Pensylvania–Geramn etc.
However, we must not fetishize the European tongue (English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese etc. are colonial tongues). We also need to push for a third language environment that will revitalize indigenous languages all across the U.S.–even sign languages.
What is wrong with living on the U.S.-Mexico border and communicating with English, Spanish, Navajo (Dine)? It would sure make things more vibrant than what NAFTA and Neoliberals have done with their dead-end economies.

The American ideological machine attempts to bind people with watered-down versions of “patriotic pragmatism–” so much so that it has effectively dumbed the majority of the population intentionally by keeping their consciousnesses confined to one linguistic practice.
While the elite teach their children various languages, or at least attempt to or even if it is lLatin or Greek, the poor and the middle class are made to fear learning another language just as much as they fear diversity and multi-racial and multiculturalism. Teaching the masses another language will actually increase their cognitive capacities and increase their chances of educational success (most college programs require a second language anyway, why wait till you’re in college to learn–by then, learning other languages is more difficult than in childhood). and to back up that theory, microsoft has recently released a version of windows in the native inca language,and i’m almost sure i read that a nahuatl (meso american/aztec) version is coming

You all are missing the point! Things like foreign langauge, and morals should never be legally mandated. Every American has the acess to learn Spanish and any other language if they make the effort to pursue it. asking the goverment to do it for you makes you lazy and short sighted. So dont try to disgrace our national sovereignty by saying were all uncultured, unmodernized, and idiotic for protecting those sovereignties “TripWriter.” Your sounding like a coy globalist. If you start doing things like you claim, then like the European Union, the globalist will suceed in securing a North American Union. And by the way the reason foreign languages are OFFERED in college is because its a choice, which ensures people have a choice to CHOOSE, not be expected. You really cant argue well can you? I have no doubt that even Bush could out debate you.
