Berlusconi on the brink? Italy in turmoil, expecting him to exit this week

‘Rumours of my resignation are completely baseless,’ he (Silvio Berlusconi) posted on his official page.

It came the day before a crucial vote, which could spark the end of his controversial political career.

And to add insult to injury, he was also hit by a major defection from his People of Freedom Party – including the glamorous Gabriella Carlucci, 52, who until now was one of his most loyal supporters.

Today the financial markets slid as Italy became the main bailout worry of the eurozone.
