Beta Testing “Carbon Consciousness” in Britain

In Britain, the government is attempting to sell “carbon consciousness” to the masses. It’s not going very well. Even politicians are wary. Because they fear what all politicians fear — if they come down to hard on the commoners, they will be thrown out on their ears. But this does not matter to our rulers. There is no shortage of people on petty little power trips who want to rule over those below them. As Andrew Orlowski writes for the Register, the “Environmental Audit Committee” is “positively evangelical about a return to rationing,” sort of like the rationing imposed on Brits during World War II, although this time around there are no Nazis on the march, no London Blitz. Instead, the Greenies are on the march, a gaggle of Chicken Littles squawking about global warming and the ecological sky ready to fall.

Problem, for the politicos, is the cost. Environment Minister Hilary Benn said a “rationing scheme would cost between £700m and £2bn to set up… and between £1bn and £2bn a year to operate he said,” a scheme — or rather a scam — “ahead of its time.” The government has “a lot of practical problems to be overcome,” most notably selling it to the British people. In the meantime, an unrelenting propaganda campaign will move forward.

Orlowski continues:

The ration, or “personal carbon allowance” or PCA, is a measure of an individual’s energy usage, either at home or traveling. Such usage is capped, and “further emissions rights will simply not be available,” the Committee says. You may choose between a holiday, and turning on the heating. Points win prizes, however, and frugal individuals would be rewarded financially from the creation of an internal market.

In other words, if the eco-fascists have their way, the average Brit will be going nowhere fast and the paucity of “further emissions rights” will have them choosing between turning on the heat in the winter or buying enough to eat, never mind holidays. Even in ancient Rome slaves were allowed a holiday now and again, but apparently “carbon consciousness” slaves will be forced to choose between not freezing to death and the occasional vacation.

It is the logic of Agenda 21, “smart growth,” and “sustainable development,” that is to say no development, in fact a rollback of modern society to the Stone Age.

Recall Maurice Strong’s opening speech at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development: “…current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class — involving high meat intake use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work-place air-conditioning, and suburban housing — are not sustainable. A shift is necessary which will require a vast strengthening of the multilateral system, including the United Nations,” in other words world government will be required to shove this down our collective throats.

Strong has it out for civilization — or civilization for us, the commoners, anyway, as the elite will always enjoy amenities and modern science — and in particular modern civilization here in the United States. He has complained that “the United States is clearly the greatest risk to the world’s ecological health” and advocates a new economic order, that it to say reducing your lifestyle to save a planet not in peril. Meanwhile, the elite — including the Rockefellers, the McNamaras, the Kissingers, the Rothschilds – will pilgrimage to Strong’s Manitou Foundation in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Crestone, Colorado, a regular New Age mecca. As our rulers and their minions pay homage to their earth god, the rest of us will conform to the “sustainable” mandates of neo-feudalism.

“We could not find or imagine analogues in other fields of human activity for individual carbon trading beyond rationing during and after World War 2,” the authors of the DEFRA-commissioned report “A Rough Guide to Individual Carbon Trading” wrote in 2006.

The Committee, chaired by Tim Yeo MP, lauds the potential for “engagement”, which will “increase awareness” of energy consumption — what the Tyndall Center calls “carbon consciousness” — which in turn would “spearhead behavioral change.” According to the MPs, “awareness is crucial if behaviors are to change.”

It will take time to inculcate the masses with “carbon consciousness,” maybe another ten or twenty years, as our rulers are a bit behind schedule and propaganda and retraining will take a while. Like the frog in the pot, we will be boiled to death slowly, incrementally. It takes time to make sacrifice “publicly and politically acceptable.” British “MPs want to end the debate about whether or not it’s a desirable option, and start marketing it as the only option,” a specialty of governments down through the ages. It is no mistake the word “marketing” is used here, for that’s exactly what our rulers intend to do, using the techniques trailblazed by Edward Bernays, the father of modern propaganda and “public relations,” or rather tricking and bamboozling the public with shell games, parlor tricks, and scary bedtime stories.

Of course, all of this is being beta tested in Britain and will soon enough come to America. Back in 1992, at the U.N. Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, we were told there would be a global plan to change the way we “live, work, eat, travel, learn and communicate” because we must “save the earth.” Our rulers don’t give a whit about the earth. But they do care about implementing the most successful and effective control mechanism history has known to date.

Keep in mind, you are the enemy. “In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill…. All these dangers are caused by human intervention… The real enemy, then, is humanity itself,” the Club of Rome declared in its 1991 report, The First Global Revolution.

But maybe Maurice Strong put it a bit more succinctly: “Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?”
