Five police officers in Birmingham, Ala., were fired on Wednesday after a video became public that shows them beating and kicking an apparently unconscious suspect in 2008 after a highway chase.

The video, filmed on Jan. 23, 2008, by a police patrol car camera, showed officers chasing a suspect, Anthony Warren, who lost control of his van and was ejected from a window in the crash. After the officers raced toward Mr. Warren, motionless on the roadside, they could be seen punching, kicking and beating him with a billy club.
The video was released by the city on Wednesday after the district attorney’s office discovered it in March. Prosecutors for the district attorney, Brandon Falls, of Jefferson County, found the tape while preparing their case against Mr. Warren, who later received a 20-year sentence for first degree assault for hitting an officer with his van during the chase.

If you had read the article through to the end you see that this idiot actually did hit a KKKop
with his vehicle and is now serving a 20 year sentence for vehicular assault. It is actually visible in the video at the point where the cop throws out the spike strip just before the van goes
out of control.

These men are not empowered to take the law into their own hands, nor are they given authority to act above it. Further, they are trained to leave their emotions out of the equation, or at the least to check them so that they do not respond like animals in heat to provocation.
These men violated the rules of engagement by beating, kicking, and punching a man, who though clearly in violation the law himself, was defenseless before their assault.
He will have his day in court, and with proper evidence, be found guilty of the crimes of which he was accused. However, that does not excuse these police who responded like a pack of wild jackals ganging up on an already beaten sheep.

All of you saying that he deserved it because he tried to run over a cop should understand that the cops often position themselves in a vehicles path because it justifies deadly force if they are nearly hit .This cop simply misjudged his ability to move.Chases are documented to be one of the most emotionally charged events for policemen and they more often than not do not think clearly during them and actually endanger far more lives than they protect. The horrible thing about this is that it took so long to come out and if it hadn’t the cops would still be on the job.They tried to ensure that this guy died from his injuries.Man I don’t know what this country is headed to!

I swerved to avoid running him over!
Almost hitting the car next to me and then the barrier!

Now you might dismiss what I am saying but remember, excusing this type of behavior from a police officer can and will only make it worse. We can not give public servants an inch because as you know, they always go for the mile. The proper thing to do would have been to give him a quick pat down, just in case he had anything, leave him be and call an ambulance. You don’t really believe that cops should pass judgment on the people in the street without a proper hearing do you? Thanks for the reply jackie. I guess I don’t know what other felonies this guy commited but I don’t disagree with tough sentencing of people with disregard to life. This guy almost killed a police officer and certainly injured him. I guess in all honesty though I would need to know what the full story was. For all we know, he was probably runniing from them because he took his kid back form CPS. Or perhaps he did something that was seriously wrong. Either way, the officers should get just as long a sentence for disregard to life. Perhaps even longer because they should be an example of what a citizen should be.

Yes, they were all amped-up because “one of their own” had been hit by the driver, but that’s NO excuse for beating and unconscious man like that. If you or I were all “amped-up” because someone had just injured a member of our family is a traffic accident and that person was unconscious because of the wreck…would we not be thrown in jail and prosecuted to the fullest extent if we had jumped on the person and beat them that severely??? Hell yes we would, and just because these clowns are Cops doesn’t mean they should be treated any differently.
I worked as an EMT on a rescue rig and in a major city hospital ER and was spit at, punched, kicked, scratched, choked, etc. and what would have happened to me if I had lost my professional bearing and struck back at the high on drugs or drunk person that had assaulted me or one of my co-workers??? Obviously, doing so would have meant the end of my career and I would have been criminally prosecuted.

If there is one good thing about this video it’s that it shows a large group of cops participating while not one of them is trying to stop the beating. This in my view shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that their is a violent mindset among our police. Most videos of police brutality are one single officer behaving in this manner. This video shows that CHANGES MUST BE MADE IN THE HIRING AND TRAINING OF POLICE.

So being a resident of Birmingham, AL I just want to be on record saying thanks to our police department for the millions we will all have to pay for since this man will most likely sue and win or get a settlement. With that kind of mentatlity I could work for 20 years and be broke or I could go steal a candy bar or something and run from the cops, get my ass beaten, get out of jail in 7 to 8 years on good behavior and be a millionaire. Hey I’m from Decatur…around an hour and a half north of you.
My comment is that I counted the seconds after the van driver ran over the cop and I counted 25 seconds. Those cops only had 25 seconds to reign in their emotions on a very hot chase that has lasted around 50 miles (probably around 30 minutes). The cops probably thought the cop that got hit was probably dead. What would most folks do? That’s a tough situation to be in. I know it sucks for the taxpayers but it sucks also to watch a friend get ran over by a guy who proabably hasn’t worked a day in his life. I’d be tempted to kick the suspects head off of his shoulder and I’d definetly want beat the cop that positioned his camera toward the suspect.

I say you are right. It is a tough situation to be in. BUT. Alls Im saying is that if this happened every day our city would be bankrupt from lawsuits. As if its not already. I aslo say that if your job is to wear a firearm and a bullet proof vest that you shouldnt get so emotional when something like this happens. Its your job. I dont pay my taxes so police can beat unconcious suspects. And if I was that officer that was hit, I would want that suspect to go to jail for the maximum amount of time. I would hate for the suspect to have a reduced sentence or a big settlement due to these officers actions. On top of that, the suspect was not even aware of the beating. So any leasons the suspect was supposed to learn werent. Mob justice is just that. If the police want to act in this manner, what do I need them for? At the end of the day what do we have? 5 police out of work at the very least on unemployment, paying for the convict to live for free for the next 20 years, and a lawsuit for millions, and also the cost of training new police officers to replace the ones that have been fired. So because 5 officers wanted to loose their cool and beat someone we the tax payers will have to foot the bills most likely in the millions. Way to go. Remain professional. Thats all that needs to happen. Everyone knows that those cops had it in their head to beat that guy when they got out of the car. I believe it to be the standard response. They just didnt expect the guy to be unconcious.

Regardless of what happend. The police know the rules of engagment. In the Military there are no excuses for breaking protocol it serves a court martial. If we the people allow the police to think they can get away with beating people because they feel justified then we are in a lot of trouble.

The “suspect” got twenty years for “hitting” a conscious cop once with his car. That was more a graze than a hit, and the cop was awake so he could dodge the threat. Then the pack of cops hit him squarely, didn’t graze with batons, kicks and punches, they struck squarely at an unconscious man. He was not able to dodge the attacks, and they were repeated, whereas his grazing “hit” at a cop happened only once. Five of these officers were fired.
If the “suspect” deserves 20 years for a single potentially deadly blow at an able person, how many years should the cops get for multiple, potentially lethal blows at a defenseless victim, already wounded in the car wreck? I watched the whole, nearly 7 minutes clip about this on the AlexJonesChannel. At the very end, they reveal that the “suspect” learned about the assault at his reckless driving trial months after it happened. He assumed all his wounds proceeded from the car wreck; he (and many officials) had been kept unaware of his victimization! Looks like cops’ attacks, whether physical or moral, are mainly launched only at unaware people. Who are the real “suspects” here?

The police endangered the public by creating the chase in the first place. The officer didn’t make a sacrifice he made a stupid decision. He put himself in front of a speeding vehicle that he knew wasn’t going to stop and couldn’t stop in time if he did get int the way. The police often jump in front of moving vehicles in order to accuse the driver attempted murder. No one pushed that cop in front of the vehicle, it was his decision.
Besides, your justifying the actions of the police in reverse order. No beating was required or necessary, nor was a high speed chase worth the outcome. You don’t escalate a situation in order to show who has the power. The police are willing to put the lives of the public in mortal danger in order to establish their power. That is totally foolish and unwise.
No, I’m not sick, I’m just not letting my emotions rule my intellect. You’re acting like that officer is some kind of hero for almost getting himself killed! Just like people portray John McCain as being some sort of war hero for getting shot down during Viet Nam! The whole purpose of flying a fighter jet in war is to NOT get shot down! Getting shot down doesn’t make you a hero, it makes you someone who got shot down.

I am an ex cop who joined the force to protect and serve while being respectful and not letting my emotions take over which is hard but every cop is trained on these ideals or use to be.
nothing more, nothing less.
More and more of our police have gone rogue or more and more ignorant thugs are being hired.
I know all the tricks that use to be utilized by a bad few and now being used by a bad many.
A good, well trained, respectful officer, no matter how heated, or how bad he thought the so called criminal was, would have never beat an unconcious man.
They should be charged for that, and all good cops would agree.

Think with logic, not emotion- this is/was constantly drilled in new officers heads to keep them from crossing the line, those officers crossed the line.
You want to know about mechanics, ask a mechanic.

incase you didn’t know, they are the ones fighting on the inside against the bad ones.
If there were no good cops, you would see alot worse than this.
Remember, who was it that leaked out the agency doc about identifying “Possible Terrorist Suspects”?, good cops.

Thanks for being honest. I agree, without good cops things would be much much worse. I think they are rooting out good officers and doing everything in their power to get rid of them. A good officer can bring a bad cop or future bad cop back to light. An older, proven an decorated officer holds weight with the young guys. If they know you’ve been “in the shyte” so to speak, they’ll take the time to listen and learn from real experience.
I don’t hate the police, though they do make me nervous and I stay on my guard when they are near. I’ve met great police officers who performed their duty in perfect harmony with the Constitution. This kinds of officers don’t look at their job in terms of black and white, they know how to let something go for the greater good, whether for the country or for the individual that may have broken some minor law or statute.
The last thing you will here come from a good officer’s mouth is “I’m only doing my job” or “It’s the law”, those statements are used to justify foolish behavior. Either believe in what you are doing and take responsibility or shut up about it. People who are in the wrong automatically have to justify their actions.

And using a helicopter is not a bad idea. Most of the country is nothing like L.A. where numerous police chases are going on concurrently every day.
I agree that you can’t just let everyone drive away, then there would be no respect for law and order but at the same time these chases endanger the public as much as or more than an actual gun fight!

I’m more concerned with the stupidity of the police officer who ran across the busy highway to throw down the tyre trap. He could have been hit by anyone or caused a pile up and multiple fatalities. Sure the beating was severe and unwarranted but couple that with the dangerous behavior of the first officer and what you have is an all round inadequate policing of the situation.
I think the police force involved need to rethink their procedure for dealing with this situation. Currently the protocol seems to involve endangering both civilians and police officers with these rodeo tactics. It is far from good enough and results in fiascos such as we have seen here. Five highly agitated under trained goons making a mockery of all the decent police who seek to protect society from genuine danger.

Everybody is getting upset about how he tried hitting the cop. It looks more like he swerved the spikes in the road, lost control and just so happens that the cop is standing in the middle of the road. Im sorry but that should be a learning experience for that department. Dont want to get hit? Dont stand in the road like that. I dont condone what the guy driving did or why he was running(in a minivan?-he should of just gave up). But I also dont condone what the officers did to him. The suspect could have easily thought he was being car-jacked. Therefore he should receive no time in jail. If he was smart he would have stood behind the car and threw the spike strip. If you stand in the way of on coming trafic, espically in front of a running suspect, your going to get hit. The firing was proper, although probably at the recommendation of city attorneys in a desperate effort to lessen the civil judgment that you know is coming. Even a lowlife deserves not to have his skull cracked or ribs puncture a lung while fully unconscious. I’d hope the officers had been trained to recognize adrenaline-fueled rage and how to do the right thing as this is in no way a new phenomenon. Having the video is sooo crucial. Everybody needs front and rear dash cams in their car. I’m currently investigating getting them.

The police withheld the beating portion of the video from the prosecutor for over a year. Every cop and supervisor at the police station knew of this crime for over a year and tried to keep it buried. The truth got out by accident. this is routine all over the country there is no justice. When lawmen break the law, then there is no law, only a struggle for survival.

I watched the video five times. Warren ran over the cop’s foot in what definitely appears to be an attempt to run the cop over. Seconds later the perp is ejected. The cops show up on scene so wound up with adreniline that they don’t even notice that the perps not conscious. The cops just watched a co-worker almost get killed, and who knows how many other lives Warren endangered.
The terminated cops were the victims on this one, in my opinion.

First of all, that speeding van, if it had hit the spike strips would have been an uncontrollable weapon. Especially since there were other vehicles, with people in them a little further ahead. Tires with no rubber on them don’t brake well! The police here INTENTIONALLY put other people’s lives at risk, PERIOD! Second, the suspect, if he had a job he would have lost it upon incarceration, but there should be alot more than just 5 officers losing jobs on this case. I saw more then 5 officers in the video. Some were looker-ons not doing their job of LAW ENFORCEMENT, and that’s not just law enforcement on the public but also on their fellow “officers”. Third, this isn’t the first timer stopstrips have caused cops to get hit! Stop using the damn things, DUH! You run out onto a road with speeding vehicles and guess what’s probably gonna happen? Don’t these idiots think? As for the beating I’m almost at a loss for words. Brutally beating a man thrown from a vehicle and laying unconscious, antone heard of attempted murder? PERIOD! Charge them all. Let the jury decide! That’s their job. But if the jury never gets to hear the case then they already took the power from the people! There should be a public outcry for justice, the suspect already got his, now let the jury decide the cops fates!

Also, at the end of the clip I saw an officer in a different colored shirt (county, not city, or whatever) that seemed to be waving off the ejaculations of one of the birds of a feather cops so he could see if there was anyone else in the van.

You will ALL be dead before this year is over. Every one of you. I have the information. Follow these instructions to the letter……
1) At the Colosseum in Rome, there is a hot dog vendor to the left of the main entrance who always wears a green shirt. The cart license number of his cart is key. The first three numbers on that plate are the street number.
Go to Switzerland. In the “shining city” on “shiny street” there is an internet cafe. Go to the third computer on the right hand side. Log onto your email USING THAT PRECISE COMPUTER, and reply to this post. Type exactly what you see in the letter, word for word to receive further instructions. If you have made it this far, you have passed the entrance exam. Follow the remaining instructions to begin your mission.
2) Go to 390 Broadway Street in NYC. On that building, there is a window on the 14th floor, 3rd one in from the left with a different brand of window casing than the rest of the windows on the building. The name of the window casing brand is the street name. The name is written on the outside. You will have to climb, repel, or act as a window washer to obtain it.
3) There is a restaurant in Minnesota called Dorothy’s. In the kitchen, inside the large freezer there is an old wooden milk crate. Under the milk crate, written in black marker is a saying. The second letter of every word in the saying form a word. That is the city.

5) DO NOT OPEN IT !!!! First, pry open the plate on the bottom of the container. Cut first the red wire, then the yellow wire. Attach one end of the red to the yellow. Do this for both wires. Then, cut the blue wire. You should hear 3 chirps. If you do not hear 3 chirps immediately after cutting the blue wire, run for your life, the container will explode, and all hope for humanity is lost. 6) Open the time capsule. Take anything of value, and there will be things of great value. Most importantly, open the small red box marked EOTW. In the box, there is a key with an address marked on it.
7) Take the key to the address in XXXXX. On the main floor, there is a tiny 1 bedroom unit where an old blind man awaits you. Knock on his wooden table two times, and say “I have heard about your wooden leg. Does it need replacing?”. Insert the key into the wooden leg and turn clockwise exactly 4 revolutions, then back 2 revolutions, then clockwise 3 revolutions. Open the compartment in the leg, and take the letter.

This is exactly the kind of things you morons need to understand.
It’s when we’re unpopular that we need our rights the most.
When everyone likes us we don’t need them, but when we commit a crime
or any other act is when we need them the most. This was not a man
making good decisions on this day, and yes he endangered a lot of people
and the cops. I won’t even go into the fact that they could have had him
without escalating this dangerous chase. However, there are protections there
for a reason. A group of men a lot smarter than you or I knew we needed
a due process to protect the innocent even if the expense was that some of the
guilty got away. It is not a cop’s job to punish anyone, period. It is a cop’s job
in this scenario to physically bring them in so due process can occur. This is
exactly the kind of justification people give when they snicker about prison rape
or the people being tortured by our government. It’s easy to point the finger
until the sights are on you, and you may simply be in the wrong place at the
wrong time, but you have no rights because they know you did it. This doesn’t work.
If you aren’t smart enough to understand this, then you deserve everything
that’s coming.

We are held to a higher standard, we are not to judge, we are to use ONLY that amount of force required to make the arrest. Everyone here that says, “He deserved it, he was a law breaker” have not clue of the requirements to be a PUBLIC SERVANT, not a COUNTY/CITY EMPLOYEE!

But in any case they shouldn’t have beat him down, but release the RADIO traffic with the video. I’m sure as soon as the officers leg was hit “Officer Down” went over the air and thus adrenaline surges.

So the next time I see a cop pulling an older woman out of her car and tasering her (attempted murder if you look a statistics) I should beat the hell out of the cop to stop the assault. Think about that. Cops are NOT judge, jury and executioner. These are peace officers, this policy enforcement will stop as will the beatings when the people stand up and say I’m a sovereign citizen and I demand my rights. Irregardless of circumstances cops don’t beat citizens, that’s bulls---. Cops don’t use cruel and unusual means in any respect toward doing their job. Why’d you take the job if you wanted to avoid danger or couldn’t handle extreme situations when they occur.
The whole system is corrupted just to the extent that these cops, prosecutors, judges don’t even apply their own criminal and penal codes as they pertain to the laws of their states. Get smart people learn the criminal, penal and transportation codes for your states and demand these people do their jobs or go to jail, get fired…or just leave.

What is interesting is that this film obviously was in the possession of the Birmingham police dept., yet nothing was done until a 3rd party – the DA’s office, obtained possession of it.
Had there been any integrity within the Birmingham PD, the police chief would have fired those officers in January of 2008.
Were it not for the DA finding the tape, nothing would have ever happened.
The moral of this story? If you are ejected from your vehicle in a high speed chase from the police, don’t expect any mercy – unless the DA’s office has a bone to pick with the police department and decides to go public with the dashcam video of you getting the crap beat out of you while you’re unconcious, facedown on the ground.

true story and in reference to the cop standing in front of the car throwing spike strip and not allowing himself enough time to get out of the way…..I live on a hill. About 5 winters ago my hill was solid ice, drivers would top the hill, then spin out of control on the ice all the way to the bottom of the hill, end over end, and hit the last driver to top the hill. Now, most of the drivers were speeding, the cops put up warning signs to no avail. We sat in the window and watched as one by one they picked up speed, end over end, down the hill and then CRASH into the last driver. It was hysterical. Some were hurt, still funny. Finally, after about 20-30 phone calls (ours included) a Hwy Patrolman shows up. He pulls into the drive, gets out of his car with a flag, and goes over and stands IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. Yep, you know what happened. The next car (on solid ice) couldn’t stop and there he was in the middle of the road with a degree in rocket science I’m sure about to get his stupid ass knocked off when he jumped, leaped into the ditch, put his hands over his head and waited to hear the CRASH. We laughed until we nearly killed ourselves. Cops are dumb.

A few years ago I helped police with some f---ed up video they had of a bank robber. This was in Fort Walton Beach FL & a guy was robbing just about every bank in the area.
Finally after 9 months of NON-STOP robberies every 3-4 weeks, (sometimes 2 weeks), they find the dude living in a motel on the beach.
Turns out he was a crack head, and was such an intense addict, he didn’t even try to hide himself. No mask in the bank jobs, no secret hide out, and not accomplices. Just one little crazy ass red neck crack head BAFFLED police for 9 whole months!

The officers did over react in beating this guys, and when you have a criminal who tried to kill the police officer who laid down the spike strips, that right there should give any police officer the right to use any means necessary to subdue the suspect because it was obvious (as shown on the video) that he had no regards for human life, and the officers who beat him probably did it out of caution, knowing that he might have been pretending to be unconscious and they didn’t want any surprises.
They didn’t deserve to get fired, maybe suspended without pay for a couple of weeks.

As A former Law-enforcement officer .. I found there action’s despicable and am glad they are off the force.. How ever there is a little known thing called Chase-syndrome your adrinaline is flowing and you can find your self running up on the suspect in a hostile manner.. it truly is a thankless job one minute your a hero and next minute your an asshole.. and alway’s under the gun so to speak.. when i joined it was because i wanted to help people.. this suspect even though he was beaten was very lucky most are only half-ejected and smeared on the asphalt.. not pretty.. bad memorie’s ending now .. just glad it did work out..for all side’s

When society and organisations of power such as mafia or gangs, begin to see police as just another gang of thugs, it will change the way cops are treated. This kind of behavior and the thuggery against the ordinary public citisen, makes things more dangerous for cops. People will begin to take the attitude that it is a war out there, and the cops are one of the enemy gangs. Surrender will not be an option, live or die fighting will be the only option, and rightly so. If things continue like this and more cops are killed, then only the cops and the cities that hire them are to blame. Adrenalin is just as addictive as crack.
