Sen. Ted Cruz said that he plans to bring new legislation to the Senate floor that would put a stop on prisoner releases from Guantánamo Bay.
“I intend next week to file legislation to halt any releases from Guantánamo until we get to the bottom of what happened in [the case of Army Sgt. Bowe] Bergdahl and provide some real congressional oversight here because it is really needed,” the Texas Republican told Sean Hannity on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Wednesday.
Cruz said that this legislation is in response not only to the Bergdahl controversy, where five Taliban members were released from Gitmo in exchange for Bergdahl, but also after hearing of another potential prison release.
“The White House should release — should declassify — the files on the Gitmo 5,” Cruz said. “If they say we should hand these terrorists over, then the American people deserve to know what they have done.”
