The Afghan government claims they prove British agents were talking to the Taliban without permission from the Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, despite Gordon Brown’s pledge that Britain will not negotiate. The Prime Minister told Parliament on 12 December: “Our objective is to defeat the insurgency by isolating and eliminating their leaders. We will not enter into any negotiations with these people.”
The British insist President Karzai’s office knew what was going on. But Mr Karzai has expelled two top diplomats amid accusations they were part of a plot to buy-off the insurgents.

The American government wanted to do anything within its power to defeat the USSR via the Mujahideen. Before the U.S. came into the picture, they barely had AK’s, and some RPG’s. After that, they had heat seeking missiles, anti-tank weapons, heavy machine guns, you name it. Even better, the U.S. trained them in guerilla tactics. It would be pretty dense of them not to try to get the Taliban on their side. History tends to repeat itself. The general public is daft when it comes to history, so they will remain in the dark on many subjects that are current in the lights of recent history. It’s easy to pull the wool over one’s eyes when their eyes aren’t open in the first place.

Jake, The U.S. government did support the Taliban to overthrow the Mujahideen government when the wouldn’t capitulate to the wishes of the U.S.!!!
We have (unfortunately) done this for many years with various governments around the world, just look at Honduras for an example! We have supported them in their fight for their own Constitution, and then when they enforce their Constitution, our Government turned around and blasted them for following the LAW in their own Country!!!!
So, it only goes to show that “Our Government” does these things without the express permission of Congress, or the full knowledge of the people that live here, because they figure that we are “TOO STUPID” to comprehend the complexities of foreign relations!!
And personally, If we help a Government get it together to be a “Free Society”, then we need to let them rule as their laws allow them to, and I don’t speak about “Fringe laws” like our Current leadership follow, I mean the laws as written in their Constitution!!

This is not a new tactic. It’s how Iraq got turned around. We recruited the Sunni insurgents, armed and trained them. They fought al-Qaeda and other insurgents and now, other than the occassional bomb in Baghdad, Iraq is relatively quiet. However, how long do you think it will take for them to takeover and return to a totalitarian government?
