George Washington once advocated that “Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” It seems that my fellow men, up over here, in the great North, also known as Quebec Canada fail to see the paradox in the latter statement. As a servant of society, a Bioengineer, I often meet a variety of individuals. At the University, I’m always happy to welcome new coming students from south of our border but never fail to underestimate the American zeal that they bring with them. At times I wonder how such a great Nation as the United-States of America, the men and woman who extended the far reaches of humanity with the Apollo program, who mesmerized the world hundreds of years before and declared independence from a tyrannical Empire can wither out and die. It is not financial death that troubles me, when one looks at the situation at hand; it is easy to see through the veils of government owned media and propaganda that the deck of cards had been tampered with, so to speak. It isn’t even the failures of a non-ending war on terror, terror becoming a never seen, never known enemy that is continually changing to meet government interests. It is the death of freedom that makes me wonder. How did it happen that ideology in itself ceased to exist? You might wonder how can ideology die. Well when one cannot form his own ideas, when a well-oiled corporate media machine runs the show, ideas become property of the state and thus ideology; the quest of idealism in itself becomes dependent on a foreign agent’s beliefs and not one’s own.
I felt compelled to write when a fellow student, a fervent Obama supporter noted how Quebec and the US would become much alike. The latter, in his opinion, becoming a Socialist country and the former already being a socialist Province. Point given, big government does have advantages, free health care, government run schools, enterprise, utility companies etc. But let’s look at Quebec for instance, the second most taxed place in the world, by first taking a look at our health care system.
If one were to have the unfortunate chance of breaking a bone or get any condition requiring immediate medical assistance than he or she would have to wait between 12 and 20 hours in an ER waiting room before being seen by a doctor. Oncology (cancer treatment) facilities are so backed up that many patients die on the waiting lists. I have witnessed with my own eyes a pregnant woman waiting 13 hours to see a doctor and fainting in the bathroom after loosing a substantial amount of blood and a 5-week-old fetus before being rushed into surgery. Just recently a man died in another waiting room after going to a local hospital because he felt chest pain and waited over 8 hours… Cause of death? A mild stroke.
That said, let’s take a look at government run services, such as the ministry of transport. Well Quebec roads are an utter and complete disaster. Potholes cause countless deaths and injuries every year simply because road construction is done cheaply by government subcontractors, as taxpayer money is laundered for other causes. Some rebut that harsh weather is the cause, when Eastern Ontario roads and Vermont roads are exposed to the same weather yet do not display a tenth of wear that Quebec Roads do.
The educational system on the other hand is probably one of the worst in Canada. Many middle class families are forced to send their children to private school hoping to free them from the burden of public institutions.

Having given these few examples, please consider that Quebec holds around 8 million citizens. Things are pretty bad up here; I couldn’t imagine how horrid it could become with a population rated around 306 million. Corruption would become so flagrant that no form of taxation would be able to cover the gigantic debt of a broken socialist government. Now that’s just considering it in terms of economical hardship. Most of Quebec has become a total Police State very similar to China or Washington DC. From forced ticketing taxation, where motorists are forcibly charged and guilty until proven innocent, a system where driving has become and I quote our minister of transport: “ A Privilege not a Right!” yet she indulges in driving over speed limits, getting caught by the cops, having it spill into the media and then declaring that she is, indeed, above the law. A Police State where crime rates slowly, yet steadily are increasing. A deteriorating cancer government that engulfs our way of life and takes away every privacy that one requires. A system where Insurance Companies, shark loaning cooperatives and greedy politicians have taken away our rights and replaced them with ever growing plights. This is Socialism, a dreaded nightmare where 45% taxation isn’t enough to pay for 6-7 million dollar parties and the rest of our money laundering politician’s hobbies. We are the best example for the American people; they must look at Quebec and ask why President Obama has double the size of government? Wasn’t Bush’s tripling enough? All in all my Southern friends Big Government equals big problems, Quebec is the example. If the US was to fall into the same paradox than newly graduated Quebec students would have to look somewhere else than South to set up a practice.

Australias healthcare system is like that as well. they say the answer is private insurance, but thats becoming more and more expensive and its just another insurance company that you are saying here , have my money , its free.
I have no idea what the answer is , because its obvious that if you have a system where people have to have insurance then half the population cant get medical attention and if you have the tax backed medical system , then you still cant get medical care because the waiting lists as so long and the hopitals are not being funded properly by the governments anyway , because I guess they must be laundering the money into there own pockets as the author of the article states.
Basically if you are not a higher end earner your not going to get medical attention without paying through the teeth for it. I have advised my children they will have to try live lives that take care of their own health.

Well in the words of Bush ‘Security trumps trade’ so we need to think along those lines and declare ‘Humanity trumps economy’ and chase these cash vampires out of health care, housing and staple foods. We need to put in place checks to all authority and we need to change our patent and copyright laws to end the monopoly on ideas and the sale of our culture. There are ways to do these things.

no you are laughable , i moved here from Ontario 6 years ago , the worst F**king move of my life . The roads , the health care, i had to wait 18 months for a discoidectomy (herniated disc surgery) due to work accident and by the time i was able to get it , the damage was done , now F***ked all my life becasue of it bent over in half , walking with a cane 90% of the time. Now that i am on workers comp for life , i am fucking stuck here forever in this fascist shit hole , Je me souviens , yeah fucking right , The peoples arrogance here even bewilders American politicians , No one helps anyone out , everyone are fucking A-holes , the societe in general is totally f***king oblivious . I live in Québec, this article is a litle exagerated. First, no way the police is dangerous here. I’m a photographer and only if Ii put myself in realy bad situation that i maybe get in trouble. For the healthcare system, it is not perfect. My mom is a nurse and the working condition are had, but EVERYONE can get FREE care. If you have the money to get medical attention faster, juste go to the US.

Oh piffle. I live in Québec as well and it’s nothing at all like it’s being described here. There are areas that have some of the problems you give but those are isolated areas and situations. It’s nothing like the whole province. Sheesh.
And you’re not a “bioengineer,” you’re a second year undergraduate student in McGill’s bioresource engineering program. And you may have been born in Québec but with a name like Eyad Jamaleddine you will never be Québécois.

I suggest you “correct” your misstatement, I went to University for 5 years, have been working for 3 since, and still do not call myself an Engineer (soon though). I live in Québec.
For the police state, I feel it more present in the US than here in QC, but you are right, the police state is rising. When I was young police was different. Police was on our side, now they are against us, watching us, harassing us. I also agree that the government is too big.
I went to the hospital once for a chest pain (I was afraid of a stroke) and I waited zero minutes. Waiting 20 hours for breaking a bone? Are you kidding? I’ve never seen that.
Now for the roads. They are bad this is true. But it is false to say that Vermont and Ontario have the same climate. Overall, there is less cold, snow and ice in Vermont and Ontario than in Québec.
And for the educational system, you just say that it is bad, no argument, no example, nothing. Empty statement. “Things are pretty bad up there” come on, come take a trip to Québec City this summer. You will have a good time, I promise.

So…what do we do about it? I know! Let’s let the fed take what ever course it wants, let them spend all the money to get ready, and then next year, before they spring it on us…no one pays any taxes what so ever, and with all their money spent, there would be no way for them to carry forward in a productive manner, and perhaps even tear it’s self down from the inside. Especially fighting over the first emergency moneys the fed would try to reprint.
just a thought, know it would never happen….but still…and not my idea, but still a good one, everyone calls in sick the same 3 days.

Let’s put what was said in true perspective.
Spend less money on medical care, sounds good, until you see who spends less on medical care, the government does, of course.
Spend less on road maintenance, the government does, but you’ll replace tires and spend more to maintain a car driven on cheap, rough roads.
45% taxes, was that total including hidden stuff, fees and fines or is it the “nominal rate”? I bet it’s actually way more.
Once they get you broken in to “there’s no way out” then you become only a slave to the government and labor to some corporate buggers. We are NOT people to the governments of the world anymore, so they need to be “re-educated” as they would the poor miscreant citizens!

I live in quebec and yes we know police state is coming here hell they installed the new photoradar in my small town. I’m also a slave of this gorverment and I can tell you they slash me a good 40% of my pay I’m a middle class worker. We fucking pay too much tax also 7,5% province tax and 5% federal tax = RIP OFF I also hate ” les bien-être social” of this province that fucking don’t pay taxes and get a monthly pension.

Montreal is a Great Place To Live.It`s Safe,Clean and Very Affordable To Live Here.Most Montrealers Speak both english and french.We have the most beautiful woman in North America.You don`t see many unhealthy obese people here.I think our health care although not perfect is far better than in the US.American System is fine if your rich and can afford high insurance costs.Thank`s to Outsourcing more and more are losing their jobs and losing their health insurance in the US.I don`t mind paying higher taxes for the quality of life we have here in Montreal.Montreal is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

I lived for 15 years in Montreal and I have great memories of my friends, the city, etc, but I am SO happy to live elsewhere because I just felt so controlled by the government in every aspect of my life that I could not take it anymore. Plus all this things about french people vs english, etc. It is the same song all the time. And taxes are just ridiculus so is the public spending in things that make no sense!!

I went to University in Ottawa, and I can tell you the Quebec kids were better prepared, had better habits, and got better grades than any of the Ontario kids (myself being an Ontario kid). True…But its not that bad Living in Quebec, seriously, where else can you go see a doctor whenever you want for free and pay only 20% of your med”s price. I had a knee surgery not long ago (true I did have to wait a year before doing it) but it Cost me NOTHING!!!!
How about University… We’re always whining about how expensive in it is, but we’re the few lucky who get to go to Universtiy for 1000$ a semester, that the government loans and Burseries will cover anyways.
Its not Perfect, but Its better then what it is in most countries of the world.

First of all, Quebec hospitals have something in the ER called TRIAGE. Anyone complaining of chest pain gets seen right away. The accusations made in this article are unfounded, unchecked and complete HERESAY!
Quebecers enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world. Yes, the roads are terrible, but damn, the food, the air, the water, the natural beauty, the architecture, the artistic culture, did i mention the food by the way? are all the best ever. Oh yeah, and the highest per-capita rate of HOT WOMEN.
I dare anyone to spend a few days in Montreal and/or Quebec City, and travel around the countryside as well, and I bet you will realize that INFOWARS is not always on the ball.

I always chuckle when someone, in this case, the author, speaks of “free healthcare”. Nothing created or instituted by mankind is free. Case in point: Holland, or Denmark, any EU country, in fact. Personal income taxes are extremely high, even in lower income brackets (middle class) compared to the U.S. of A. And corporate taxes are lower than in the U.S. of A. Just who do these clowns think are paying for the “free” healthcare? Damn right if you take half of my income for taxes, not counting valued added taxes and petro taxes, property taxes, licensing fees and registration fees, etc., my healthcare should be “free”. I read an article that stated in England, people over the age of 55 are often denied kidney dialysis. If this is true, that is NOT healthcare. That’s a death warrant. My mother has excellent medical insurance. She gets all sorts of things done for her that are just of an elective nature. And she is anxious to begin receiving “free” healthcare. I have news for her. She won’t get these costly little procedures done anymore. And most assuredly, since she is 79, most care will be denied as a waste of money because “she has outlived her viability as a productive human being”. But all hail Obama! The Democrats have come to save us all and provide us what they think we need and we should just shut up and accept it. Bullshit!

Pie-throwing activist guilty of assaulting peace officer

CALGARY — Political activist Lily Phan has been found guilty of assaulting a sheriff in an attempt to pie the premier, but she’ll have to wait two months to learn her fate.
Provincial court Judge Bill Cummings yesterday convicted Phan of assaulting Sheriff Hady Hammoud while he attempted to stop her from flinging pie filling in Premier Ed Stelmach’s face at a Stampede breakfast on July 9, 2007.
Phan, 31, was found guilty of common assault, assaulting a peace officer and assault while resisting arrest in connection with the attack on Hammoud.
There was insufficient evidence to also find Phan guilty of charges of mischief and causing a disturbance, said Cummings.
Outside court, Phan said she’s not surprised by the guilty verdicts.
“I feel that this is in line with the increasing criminalization of political dissent in this province and across the country,” said Phan, adding she threw the pie filling in protest of Stelmach’s policies on homelessness, poverty and the environment.
Crown prosecutor Lloyd Robertson requested Phan receive 30 days in jail and three months probation.
Although Phan missed the premier when she grabbed some pie filling and swung it in his direction, Robertson said the abuse against Hammoud, who intervened to protect Stelmach, should be treated as seriously.
“The damage to a democracy is great … when this type of action occurs,” he said about the pie attack.
“(Politicians) have to be able to walk around freely to meet the public.”
He added it’s unacceptable that Phan kicked Hammoud repeatedly while he attempted to restrain her.
“Their uniforms are not permission to assault them,” said Robertson.
But defence counsel Mark Takada said it’s Phan’s first offence and doesn’t warrant incarceration.
“She’s not convicted of assaulting the premier of our province — she’s convicted of assaulting a peace officer,” he said.
Cummings requested a pre-sentence report and is expected to hand down his sentence on Aug. 31.

Quite frankly you people don’t get it.
Quebec used to be in much better shape. Government and taxes aren’t the problem. It medical and retirement costs tied to the Baby Boomer generation. It’s killing the Quebec. It’s also killing other Anglo-Saxon regions as well.
Take a look at America, for instance. The US Governments liabilities for that group exceed $50 TRILLION in today’s dollars, never mind hyper-inflation in the not-too-distant future.
North American societies simply cannot afford to pay out benefits for such a large group. Most, if not all, need to scale back or risk total meltdown.
Baby Boomers: the party is OVER. So… get OVER IT.
