CCTV schemes in city and town centers have little effect on crime

The use of closed-circuit television in city and town centres and public housing estates does not have a significant effect on crime, according to Home Office-funded research to be distributed to all police forces in England and Wales this summer.

The authors, who include Cambridge University criminologist, David Farrington, say while their results lend support for the continued use of CCTV, schemes should be far more narrowly targeted at reducing vehicle crime in car parks.
Results from a 2007 study in Cambridge which looked at the impact of 30 cameras in the city centre showed that they had no effect on crime but led to an increase in the reporting of assault, robbery and other violent crimes to the police.
Home Office ministers cited the review last week in their official response to the critical report from the House of Lords constitution committee on surveillance published earlier this year. The peers warned that the steady expansion of the “surveillance society”, including the spread of CCTV, risked undermining fundamental freedoms, including the right to privacy.

Then explain the increase in knife crime. Where have you been over the past few years? The new figures indicate that in the year 2007-8 there were some 277 deaths from stabbings in England & Wales alone (the highest recorded figure for 30 years). This represents an average death toll as a direct result of stabbings of over 5 for every week of the year! And you can google knife crime in london stats to see for yourself. That means that knife crime has increased by 38%. So where did you get your stats from?

Type of crime is a factor, whilst it is true that disorderly, violent, mugging, low level crime
has been reduced other types of crime have proliferated.
The extent of the new or newly discovered crime is not yet available but some raw data should become available in the next year or two.

It looks to me that the high contrast KB1 to dark blue against bright white has
changed to a smudge of gray / bule goes to dull white.

Lol. sorry, my 12 month old daughter decided to run up and click the mouse on my laptop after she smacked the keyboard. What I was going to say was, this means that the same amount of effectiveness of CCTV surveillance on the public can be achieved without spending nearly as much money, and with far fewer cameras. You need to consider the fact that every major catastrophe that was caught on a CCTV tape normally occurs relatively in the same spots, this means that other spot’s privacies need not be intruded upon in the interests of civil security and national security.
But yes, I would also do the same as you did and inquire as to how the results were founded. This conclusion is interesting and certainly helps the conspiracy theorist’s claims, but i’d like to see the research behind the conclusion before I make any kind of solid judgement about it. I’ve learned in the past not to trust all major news sources without further proof of a scientific nature.

Translation: These things don’t do crap to make your streets safer, but they do provide tons of extra work for our police officers which is a great justification for increasing our police dept budgets.

I have ran through countless yellow lights and several red lights that have the cameras set up so “catch” people running red lights. I have never received a ticket, so this leads me to believe they are just getting the public used to being watched.
