RT: The fragile U.S. economy has been met with bank bailouts and stimulus plans. So what’s to come in 2009? Joining me now to answer that question is Gerald Celente, founder and director of the Trends Research Institute. Thank you for joining me.

| In 2009 we’re going to see the worst economic collapse ever, the ‘Greatest Depression’, says Gerald Celente, U.S. trend forecaster. He believes it’s going to be very violent in the U.S., including there being a tax revolt. | |
RT: How would you define the economic trend that you have forecasted for 2009?
G.C.: We’re going to see the economic collapse the likes of which the world has never seen before. It’s not only in the United States; it’s going global. At the end of 2008 we saw Christmas retail sales: women’s apparel down 23%; home furnishings and electronics off 27%; luxury items down 35%. These are Depression Era collapses. We saw major bankruptcies, such as retailers Circuit City and Linens and Things. One bankruptcy after another. Then we saw store closings. Starbucks, Home D&D Power and down the line.
The question becomes who is going to take all of the vacant retail space? Who is going to rent it? The answer is – nobody. Now we look at the financial collapse in 2008, we saw the Merrill Lynch mob go under the bed and the Lehman boys went bankrupt. You saw bond companies, brokerage firms, and banks go belly up. Who is going to rent all the vacant commercial business space that they used to occupy? The answer is – nobody. The commercial real estate collapse that’s going to happen in 2009 is going to dwarf the residential real estate collapse.
RT: You use the Great Depression as an analogy, as a comparison. During the Great Depression unemployment was 25%. Now it has increased, it’s I think over 7.2. Is that number going to get much, much bigger?
G.C.: We have to look at the real number. There are two sets of books that the government keeps. When they measure up unemployment they don’t add in the people who are no longer looking for jobs because they have become discouraged since they cannot find employment after looking so long. And they don’t include part-time workers. When you put that number into it, the number is 13.7%. And that’s a government number. And this is just beginning. And again, current events form future trends.
What did we see? We saw in one day some 61,000 jobs evaporate off the map. You’re going to see Great Depression numbers. Because, as I mentioned, with this commercial real estate collapse, all of these retail stores closing, like Starbucks and Macy’s, you go down the line. You look not only at people who work for these places that no longer have jobs, but how about all the supportive industries – the advertising, the manufacturers, the products. They’re going to be laying off people as well. We’re going to see Great Depression numbers. In that effect, this is going to be worse than the Great Depression.
RT: What are we going to see happening to the society, to people’s day-to-day lives in terms of how they treat one another, how they behave, crime?
G.C.: When I say it’s going to be worse than the Great Depression, we call it the Greatest Depression. By the way, to be using 1930s models to get the U.S. out of this is really stupid. Back then when we first crashed most people didn’t have homes. There was no such thing as home equity loan. And back then, people didn’t have credit cards. The consumer wasn’t 14 trillion dollars in debt. We had a manufacturing base that built the world out of the Great Depression following World War Two. We no longer have that.
Now people are at the edge. They’re stressed out. Look, the Americans are the most depressed nation on the world already. They take more antidepressant drugs than anybody, plus the other kinds of drugs that they are taking. You’re going to see crime levels in America that are going to rival the third world. Welcome Mexico City. You’re going to start seeing people being kidnapped in this country like they do in other underdeveloped nations. So it’s going to be very violent in America.
RT: You’re not exaggerating?
G.C.: I’m not exaggerating, the facts are there. I have a saying: when people lose everything and they have nothing to lose, they lose it. You’re going to see people saying, off with their heads. There’s going to be another revolution in this country.
RT: When will this revolution that you have forecasted in your Trends journal happen and what will ignite it?
G.C.: It’s going to be a tax revolt. We’re going to start seeing a tax revolt in the United States. People are one job away from losing everything. We’re seeing more and more closures, people are being laid off. People are stretched to the limits. And what do they do in New York State? Some130 new taxes are being proposed, they’re raising sales taxes. There’s going to be a tax revolt in this country from property taxes first and school taxes second. That’s what we’re going to see start to happen.
RT: Do you feel people are not hopeful that Obama will make a difference?
G.C.: People are hopeful, they are desperate and they are fearful. And they’ll hang on to anything. Let’s look at the facts. A man of change, who did he bring into Washington? You know they say by their deeds you shall know them. Let’s look at his Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, former Robert Rubin from the Clinton administration, the former president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Change? How about Larry Summers, the former Clinton Secretary of Treasury? I mean, I’ve been around a long time. I never remember a newly elected president bringing in basically the national security team from the last administration who happen to be from another party.
RT: Do you not think Obama’s different in any way?

G.C.: By their deeds you shall know them! If I bring in a baseball hitter that strikes out every time and I want him to play in the World Series is he going to hit the ball over the fence? They brought in Larry Summers, Timothy Geithner. Look at the crew. Look who they are. They’re strike out artists, every one of them. The only thing that they know how to do is not to get their finger nails dirty.
RT: There was a sentence in your report, the Trends Journal, that really caught my attention. You wrote: ‘On 9/11, those who listened to the authorities and returned to their offices went down with the towers.’ So are you saying that Americans should not be listening to the officials who are saying the Stimulus Plans are going to make everything better? Is that the analogy?
G.C.: Read my lips. No new taxes. I didn’t have sex with that woman, Monica Lewinski.
I smoked but I didn’t inhale. Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction and ties to Al-Qaeda. Why would anybody believe these people?
RT: So what are Americans supposed to do if they’re not supposed to trust their leaders?
G.C.: Personally, I buy gold. And I’ve been talking about gold since the Trends Journal 2001. We peg the bottom and we said it would start going up at 275. Number two, you don’t spend a dime you don’t need to spend.
RT: What would be the good jobs to benefit from in this year?
G.C.: Anything having to do with health. Anything. It’s going to be a growth industry. And fortunately a lot of them are going to pay a lot of money in that field because a lot of that is going to be care for the elderly. And the other thing really is anything having to do with conservation engineers, anything that’s going to prove technologically sound and smart to save money and to make money.
RT: What about geopolitics, what trends are we going to see in terms of the relationships between the United States and the rest of the world?
G.C.: Well the rest of the world is very hopeful, using the word ‘hope’, with the Obama administration. And again, we’re going to have to see what transpires, but so far, and again, by their deeds you shall know them.
Obama, when he first started to run, he was going to be out of Iraq. As soon as he became president he was going to start bringing soldiers home. Now they won’t be out for 16 months and now their reports say they’re going to bring upwards of 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan. He was also talking about preventive strikes in Pakistan. So it really doesn’t look like it’s going to be much of a smoothing of geopolitical relations.
The one factor we’re looking at, at a time that could only be the worst time for it to happen, is what’s going on in the Middle East, in the Israel-Gaza war. Israel, as they said, they were trying to do as the reports have come out, if they attack Iran at any level, it will begin World War Three. Because if this war spreads beyond Gaza, it’s going to inflame the Middle East. It can cause an oil crisis as we saw in 1973, that’s what ended the Arab-Israeli war when they embargoed oil going into the U.S. That’s our major concern. We’re also seeing, and we’re going to wonder, if Obama continues with putting the so-called missile defense shield in Poland and in Czech Republic in Eastern Europe and if they keep pushing more and more into Georgia. If that keeps happening we’re going to see a reignition of the Cold War.
RT: You have been trend casting since 1980, more than two decades. How do you compile your information and why do you believe you’ve been so spot-on most of the time?
G.C.: Current events form future trends. You can see what’s going on. A great scholar said, “In today already walks tomorrow.” So we say current events form future trends. But when people look at the trends, they colour them or shade them with their own ideology, their own beliefs. It’s what they want, what they hope for, what they wish for.
I’m a political atheist. I look at things for the way they are, not the way I want them to be. I don’t colour them or try to change them because of an ideology. The other major factor that we do differently at Trends Research Institute than anywhere else is we look at over 300 different categories on a global basis. So we’re looking at economics, we’re looking at politics, we’re looking at changes in the family, we’re looking at geopolitics. We’re making connections between different fields continually.
RT: How can America get out of the situation?
G.C.: All you have to do is to look back to the 1990s when America entered into a recession. We had 7.2 unemployment rate in 1993. What got the U.S. out of the 1990s recession was something called the ‘internet revolution’ that had a productive capacity. Products were invented, designed, manufactured, marketed and serviced. So you’re asking about new jobs, ask about alternative energies. Anything that’s going to advance the U.S. into the 21st century in an intelligent way. That’s where the job opportunities are going to be.

The other day Celente was on a major fm radio station talking about how you should buy gold. The tv is telling people to buy gold. Infomertials are promoting buying gold. when the tv is telling the masses what they should do then look out.
You guys think that celente, peter schiff, beck and olberman are allowed to talk about the real world and talk about truth? No.
celente did not mention 9/11 truth he did not mention builderbergs, trilateral, cfr, the illegality of the irs and fed., the shutting down of free speech or the entire Bill Of Rights for that matter. He did not direct people to infowars or the internationalforecatser. He didn’t mention any of it.
The powers control most of the physical gold and they control the price of what little gold the people do have. So it makes sense to buy gold huh.

Excellent argument! Real value comes out of necessity a LB. of nails would be more valuable than gold if you had to build a roof for shelter and there was no one with whom to trade the gold. I was thinking about dumping some of my silver eagles and buying solar panels.

I was reading a story written by a man who lives in South America and he tells us that buying expensive gold coins will not work for the ordinary person. He says that there will be illegal markets set up when the economy crashes. Kinda like flea markets with rows of tables for ordinary people to buy and sale things like clothes and food. He siad that there are tables where they buy your gold but they will pay you the same amount for your expensive gold coins as if they were nothing more than junk jewelry like chains and gold band rings. He told us that if a magic fairy had came to him 2 years before the crash and warned him that he would have went to a pawn shop and bought a bag of junk gold jewelry instead. He also said that he would have stocked up on a lot more food and water. Bought a 4X4 Truck because there are a lot of roadblocks everywhere they go no and people with 4×4’s are able to just jump a curp and not be stuck in traffic for hours. He also talked about the crime there and gives advice on how to protect yourselves and tells some of the tricks the desperate people will pull like jumping in front of your car to try and get you to stop…he advises us to hit the gas and they will hear you speed up and jump out of the way. He said that doing that becomes like second nature in South America. He advises us to try and get some kind of power backup because when the economy crashes the cities have black outs often and that is when crime really shoots up. I myself purchased My Solar Backup advertised on this site and it really works great.

I will, however, state that the MSM went to great lengths to suppress information about the need to buy into gold. Only now, after it is painfully obvious, are they talking about it. If you bought gold a couple of years ago you’d be doing quite well for yourself. So to answer the question at the end of your post: Yes. Gold will only go up in price. Too bad people have waited so long and can hardly afford it now.
By the way, has anyone seen the infomercial that is asking you to send in your gold in exchange for fiat currency? I would be wary of THAT instead.

You’ve got a lot of good points, but I’d be careful of putting blame on people without taking certain factors into account. Bringing up 9/11 would, for many still-deluded people, ruin his credibility… click goes the remote. Talking about destroying the IRS and the Fed, while people en mass would be absolutely jubilant at the new-found freedom, would provoke mistrust and regression within their little doublethink psyches… click goes the remote. The “conspiratorial” overtones of pointing out that most of the powerful positions in “Obama’s” administration belong to Trilateralists makes people think Celente’s just some old Italian oddball, no matter that he’s been right so many times in the past (if they even know that or care)… click goes the remote.
Unfortunately, people on any mass-media outlet must be very accurate and concise, and as such, a lot of information needs to be left out. That’s the fantastic thing about what Jones does on the radio. Having Gerald Celente on for 1:30 or more to say whatever he feels, combined with Jones’ relentless interrogation (I don’t know how many interviews you’ve read or listened to with other interviewers, but their questions don’t even hold a candle to Jones’) gets to the absolute bottom of the story, then sludges around for awhile in the sewage.
I do agree with you completely though that the gold market is getting near its end. It’s funny to me that Jones, Chapman, Anderson, Williams and many others believe so completely (as do I, on a slightly more earthly level) that the “Illuminati” essentially control the world, yet they think in the same breath that gold is a safe place to invest their money. Couldn’t they crash the gold market tomorrow? Especially if you ascribe to Lindsay Williams’ view?
Point is, Celente is right. There is going to be a large scale rebellion in this country. Crime is going through the roof, to levels we haven’t seen in a hundred years. Unemployment is going through the roof, capping out at 20% at minimum, my own prognostication is 35% before 2012. That’s 115.5 million people. Marshall Law is absolutely on the table, and if you doubt it, then ask yourself why hundreds of billions of dollars have been put into its planning, why COG (Continuity Of Government) blueprints are classified above top secret? Gold won’t save you, it will be effectively worthless just like the money. I mean what, are you going to go pay for groceries with gold bullion and coins??
We need, more than anything, to unite, to plan out some COP (Continuity Of Patriotism) blueprints, and take over some localities. Or become bond-serfs in a neo-feudalist shit pit.

I have thought about the frequency of gold commercials as well and I too am suspicious,but let me know of a better way to safeguard your assets-and don’t tell me to just hold US currency in the bank.
With cash,they don’t have to confiscate it,they can devalue it or demonetize it, but with gold,they have to physically come and find it because IT WILL ALWAYS HAVE VALUE ALL OVER THE PLANET.

Rothschilds at the Bof E set the daily spot price of gold and have for decades. biggest holder of physical metal is IMF. in the 1960’s- 1980’s kissinger and the cabal urged the opec nations to store gold. then in the 1980s when they’d put their oil revenues into western banks, the banks “lost” their arab deposits by lending to third world countries who they knew would predictably default on payments. it was all arranged.
meanwhile, the western banks ‘arab money’ was indeed safely hidden in disguised accounts by the bankers. of course the third world $$ loans were nothing but fiat electronic entries created in the first place. but the opec nations were responsible for signing those contracts and ceding their real money to the bankers.
when the opec nations then drew on their gold to shore up their needed operating revenues after the loss of their oil deposits, the IMF/rothschild cabal dropped the dropped the price of gold and dumped excess amounts on the market to further damage gold returns. the arab countries were screwed and kept in line.
…so take note of means and methods- soon to be reprised? do we really think they havent anticipated all this beforehand???

A lot of Christians ignore what Jesus actually says in the Bible. They also tend to add things to the actual words to make them say something else. If you honestly and truthfully read these quotes, without adding to them, it is very easy to see that Jesus is not saying that God will think about your prayers. He says God will grant all your prayers. Clearly, God doesn’t grant all prayers and this proves that Jesus was a habitual liar.

Why does everything have to be turned into a religious argument? Just agree to disagree. Yes, there were many things left out of the bible (gnostic texts/books/etc) so your point is valid. Sure.. many cool things have happened that can only be explained as a “miracle” so I’m sure there is a higher power.. great, you christians have valid points!!
I really don’t think religion has anythng to do with the physical world. People do bad things because they can and because we often let them. The one true things is: We all have free will. People will always use free will to do good and bad things.. even good people (priests/politicians/lawmakers/enforcers) do bad things. Sometimes bad peole do good things (give to charity, make cool stuff,etc).
Getting into arguments about something that isn’t proven true or false doesn’t get anything accomplished.. it diverts attention away from the subject at hand.
Obviously we’re NEVER going to be united in the “united states”.. so what’s the point of discussion if it constantly drags away from the actual topic? Put relgion aside.. help your neighbors in these hard times, agree that our economy needs a solution by a better cast of characters than we’ve currently got/had and I bet we’ll all be respecting each other and our religion/non religion eventually.

It’s true that the ruling elite have a lot of control over the gold price because they own the vast majority of it. The physically held gold coins is just a small part of it. What will never happen to gold is that it goes to zero. The exchange price can be lower or higher but unless you are forced to exchange it will always return to a middle ground and in a period of hyperinflation the paper currency loses it buying power but the coin does not.
The main problem with a gold coin in a major currency collapse is that people will want staples and necessities and it is these that will be the best exchange items. Storable food. Dirt farming will be a good activity so seeds, horticultural knowledge and basic gardening tools will also be sought after.
“permaculture” is a great way to run a small farm and only really needs seeds in a wide variety to work without chemicals or fuel energy.
If you had $100,000 to invest and you brought gold coins you could have a thousand of them. If you invested in long term storable food and heirloom seeds you could have a warehouse full. Now, consider a major financial meltdown. What will happen is that the Dollar starts to by less and less and then suddenly drops and inflation of staple goods go through the roof in paper money terms. Once the transport logistics that supplies and transfers the food breaks down (3 days without fuel will do it), all of the shops where the majority of people get their food on a daily or weekly basis will be empty. Farmers and local producers will stop selling their produce because the paper currency that they could get is losing value and the produce is going up.
It’s true that the gold coin option has protected the buying power of the owner of it but how exchangeable is it bearing in mind the situation you find yourself in? The guy with the food mountain is in a much stronger position in terms of barter trade. Not only can he eat for years but because of the food shortage he can barter for missing stuff from a position of strength. (Providing he has adequate security).
So: It’s better to be holding gold coins then a currency which is crashing. I think it’s better to have the biggest possible food stash bearing in mind the reality on the ground. Also, anyone can invest in storable food because with just a few Dollars a week you can stash all sorts on a weekly basis.
The more people that stash food the better the situation will be. The problem is I would calculate that the majority of the population won’t be prepared because they watch MSM which won’t tell them a thing until it’s too late.

I like what this guy said about the difference between his company’s approach and others– they don’t color facts with their own ideology or political agenda. You can’t look at the pricing of gold because you do not know when you are selling it.
Think of it from substantial possession point of view.
Do you want paper or gold when you have to liquidate to live??
Gold will get you more than a piece of paper will.
If you are buying gold and silver as an investment. Than it is hard to imagine many scenarios in which the floor would fall out on prices. Except a mother lode discovery.
They are finding some nice ship wreck recoveries.
But less chance of falling than stocks.

I’m starting to not believe in this shit anymore. “were going to see this, were going to see that,….blah, blah, blah. All these people that have come out and said the economy will completly collapse ALL SAY THE SAME THING AT THE END….BUY GOLD! I think it is a scam so England make more money because they control all the gold. I mean when I go outside, every third or fourth car is a BMW, people buying all the plasma tv’s, ect… There is no doubt in my mind that many folks have lost their jobs, but look at the kind of jobs they held. You think the economy is fucked because ford didn’t sell enough cars? Ford is pathetic, nearly all the pigs drive ford crow victorias, many of the construction workers buy ford trucks, all the hotels in the U.S. pretty much use ford vans to shuttle the sheep to and from airports, the taxi cabs are mostly ford, and the number one selling automobile in 2008 was a ford f150, and yet ford has no money…hahha, maybe stop paying the ford executives hundreds of millions of dollars every ear.
The companies laying people off and the many that are cutting salaries for their current employees are only doing it to make more money. It’s kinda like who built your house…You thought that becuase a group of spanish people built your house and they work for less, that the savings would be past on to you? WRONG! The builder (i.e. toll brothers) just made more money!
Of course those who don’t have a college education or those who have jobs that consist of shuffling papers around are going to be hit the hardest. I guarantee you if the media told the mass sheep TODAY that the economy is super strong now, people would start spending again. This is all for the corporations to make more money. Go watch the documentary “the corporation” to see how disgusting they are.
Having said all of this, there is no doubt the economy is being deliberately dirsupted—so the rich can get richer and the poor get poorer all the while destroying the middle class. Corporations are running the show–they need more slaves to do work that no one truly does not want to do.

That’s what a lot of it’s about. People have agendas for promoting ideas, no matter what view they have.
Constantly hearing on Alex’s program: “buy gold”.
The more people say the economy is going to “be the worst in history” or things to that effect, the more people lose hope and it will happen.
Some people here seem to want that to happen for some reason, rather than things to improve and people to be able to keep their homes and jobs.
I guess tragedy is “fun” for some.
