Chicago cabbie sentenced to 7 1/2 years in terrorism case

A Chicago cab driver of Pakistani descent was sentenced today to 7 1/2 years in prison for providing a few hundred dollars to a Kashmiri nationalist group connected to al-Qaeda.

Raja Lahrasib Khan pleaded guilty in February to a single count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization in return for a reduced prison sentence. He could have faced up to life in prison if he had been convicted at trial.

“Chicago is my home,” Khan told U.S. District Judge James Zagel before the sentence was imposed. “I have made a good life here. I have spent more time here than in my home country. A few years back I made a bad decision. I did something of which I am ashamed and I deeply regret.”
