Long-time Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal stood to gain financially if Hillary Clinton took his advice on the war in Libya.

That is one of the accusations Republican Congressman Trey Gowdy made in a 13-page letter to the top Democrat on the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

Clinton’s email problem came to light as a result of the committee attempting to find out what happened on September 11, 2012 when Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in a coordinated attack. Gowdy says new evidence points to problems with Blumenthal and he is promising to release the emails to prove it, USA Today reports:

“Beyond the pure politics that were occurring at this time, perhaps more disturbing is that at the same time Blumenthal was pushing Secretary Clinton to war in Libya, he was privately pushing a business interest of his own in Libya that stood to profit from contracts with the new Libyan government — a government that would exist only after a successful U.S. intervention in Libya that deposed Qaddafi,” Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina said in a letter Thursday to the Benghazi panel’s top Democrat.

Gowdy claims that more than half the emails sent to and from Clinton’s secret homebrewed email server regarding Benghazi involved Blumenthal. He is also promising to release those emails within days to show that Blumentahl, who was forbidden from working at the State Department by the Obama administration, had become Clinton’s top advisor on the Libya file:

“The fact that former Secretary Clinton relied so heavily on an individual for the Libyan intervention, her quintessential foreign policy initiative, whom the White House explicitly prohibited from working at the State Department is mind boggling,” Gowdy wrote.

Clinton, who initially blamed the attacks in Benghazi on a badly-made YouTube video, later balked at the suggestion that her department could have handled anything differently, flippantly saying before a Congressional committee, “What difference does it make?”
