Cop Stripped Of Badge After Assaulting Bike Rider

A rookie cop – the son of a highly respected New York City detective – has been stripped of his badge and gun after being caught on video viciously attacking a bicyclist who was part of a Times Square demonstration. ‘
The startling YouTube video shows Officer Patrick Pogan, 22, apparently setting his sights on – and then tackling – a bicyclist as he pedaled along Seventh Avenue as part of last Friday’s controversial Critical Mass ride.
Christopher Long, 29, was among a throng of riders as he whizzed toward the corner of West 46th Street at 9:30 p.m. and appeared to try and swerve away from the officer.
But the video shows Pogan pick up his pace as he stares down Long before shoving the cyclist, slamming him to the pavement.
To the dismay of stunned pedestrians, Long, who was not wearing a helmet, hurtles several feet through the air as he flips off the bicycle and lands on the curb.
Pogan and a second officer then lunge toward the prone cyclist as the video fades to black. The footage, filmed by a tourist and posted anonymously on YouTube, sparked imme diate public outcry and prompted the NYPD to place Pogan on desk duty while the Internal Affairs Bureau investigates.
The NYPD declined to comment further.
What the video doesn’t show is Pogan arresting Long for attempted assault in the third degree, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct – charges that kept the Bloomfield, NJ, man behind bars for 26 hours before his release late Saturday.
Adding insult to injury, the criminal complaint drafted by Pogan bears little resemblance to what was witnessed by onlookers and recorded on video.
In court papers, Pogan accused Long of purposely swerving his bicycle to block traffic and then using it as a weapon to run down the officer, knocking him off his feet and causing a "laceration" on his forearm. "You are pawns in the game. I’m going to have your job," Long told Pogan, as he flailed and kicked his arms and legs, according to the complaint.
Pogan has been on the force for just three weeks since graduating from the Police Academy on July 2 and is assigned to Midtown South.
A third-generation cop, Pogan lives at home with his father – Patrick Pogan Sr., a highly respected detective and biochemical and mass-destruction expert who is retired from the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
"He’s my son. I’m proud of him. He’s third-generation that’s been serving the city," said Pogan Sr., who was at home in Massapequa Park, LI, today and said he had not seen the video. "These people are taking over the streets and impeding the flow of traffic. Then you gotta do what you gotta do," said Pogan, 51.
Long declined comment through his lawyer.
"If it wasn’t caught on video people would not have believed it," said Christopher Ryan, who rides with Critical Mass and is filming the monthly protests for a documentary. "The video just shows what the cyclists have been saying all along, that the police are still harassing and intimidating them from doing group rides," said Ryan. "An officer assaulted a cyclist for no reason. It’s just crazy."

Over a decade ago, during my life as a long haired dude, a friend and I walked out of a bar on Chicago’s north side. A homeless woman on the sidewalk was being put into a paddy wagon by way more cops than needed, and a small crowd stood by and watched right outside of the bar. A cop told my friend and I to “get lost,” to which I replied “yes sir!,” maybe a little sarcastically. Ten minutes later we’re walking down the street, and basically had forgotten anything had happened. The cop cuts in front of us with his car, and slams me on the hood claiming I had interfered with police work. The citation he wrote out for court was a big fiction story which had me screaming and encouraging a mob uprising against cops and conspiring to free someone in custody from handcuffs. It was freaking incredible and frustrating especially when some people couldn’t believe my side.

Just read Serpico and remember, that shit was in the 50s-70s. Imagine the corruption now. In Serpico he talks about how in Denver, there were cases where cops actually robbed houses that they were called to. Great job guys. You certainly deserve the utmost respect.

While instances such as these are being reported on at an alarming rate in the recent future, we must remember that not all law enforcement officers and or soldiers are mindless thugs that have sworn their loyalty to the State or the NWO, rather they have not forgotten their oaths to serve the people and the US Constitution. However, there needs to be greater accountability and review exercised on a local and national level for the behavior and actions of those officers that do act outside the law and should be punished accordingly.

It’s kind of hard for me to take sides here… Those people on bikes are a nuisance and they are obstructing vehicle traffic on purpose trying to pester in more environmental social change. The cop on the other hand shouldn’t have done what he did either.
Those bicycle protestors are asking for bike safety awareness week…. but probably that’s not going to happen because the powers that are want that kind of thing going on. Too bad.

Hopefully, this 3rd generation cop will be criminally charged with assault. This is outrageous. What we didn’t see was what the bicyclist may have done to provoke this; he could have flipped off Pogan – but that’s not likely. The most likely thing is that Pogan decided to make an example of Long.
Of course, the burder of proof is on Long – corrupt cops like Pogan get away with this kind of thing all the time. They think they have the right to administer “justice” at their own discretion. I’m sure he got some great “mentoring” from the 1st and 2nd generation thugs in his family tree.

I’m from the NYC area. Critical Mass has been going on for years. Many attempts to stop the mass group rides have been tried. The city passed a piece of legislation stating that over a specific # of riders (together) requires something similar to a parade permit. The officers are told to crack down on the CM riders, mostly due to a few, years past, riding fast on crowded sidewalks and going against the flow of traffic. In my view, as a cyclist, it’s just good. clean fun, although there are a few of the riders that may be a bit overzealous.
The officer in question was completely out of line. Just goes to show what they’re teaching recruits in the academy these days? Who knows, except that this action was a case of criminal assault by the officer.
He’ll probably walk, too. As an individual that logs 150-200 miles a wk, cycling, I am more concerned with the # of poor drivers that don’t signal, pass and then turn directly in front, or pull out w/o looking while on their cell phones. Have not had any altercations with police officers…. yet.

What did all of the other bicyclist in this group do about it? Why didn’t this cop have the crap beat out of him right on the spot? Are there any men left in NYC? The video showed at least 100 people on bikes, if all had got off their bikes and swarmed the cops, justice could have been done right on the spot. Now it will be up to the courts. The cop the prosecutor and the judge will cut a deal, say like a 50 dollar fine.
If I were you I would sell the bikes and buy rifles. Nothing fancy just a good old reliable SKS or similar. This shit is getting totally out of hand and will get much worse in the future.

I would really love to know what the officer was thinking. Presumably these guys become cops so they can keep good people safe and put criminals behind bars. Pogan is just trying to turn an innocent person into a criminal by placing false charges on him, right after he assaulted him no less. I would also love to know why the other cop didn’t arrest his partner right there. Cops are supposed to enforce the laws. And I would think it is worse when a cop breaks the law, it should be considered a greater offence, but you see these guys let eachother off all the time. You would think that they would charge the bad cops thus showing the public that they are serious, but with every incident like this it becomes more evident that they are nothing more than an elaborate joke.

Critical Mass riders can go fuck themselves. Seattle PD just arrested 2 of them here for busting out a drivers windows, denting his hood, and slashing his tires. Then one of them hit the driver over the head with a bike lock. All because they felt he was being too aggressive trying to pull out of a parking lot as they rode by. You act like that.. you don’t belong on the streets.

What matters now is what happens to Pogan. His brutal assault could easily have resulted in severe injury or even the death of that bicyclist.
He should be sent to prison for a long time. If he is not, if he is just temporarily “stripped of his badget and gun” then we must begin considering military options.
We simply cannot continue as a nation if our Constitution and our laws are flagrantly violated by the very people who pretend to honor the law and to protect us. If our judicial system fails us here, there is no hope for a peaceful restoration of our nation.

We all know cops usually have lower than average IQ’s though and think that if they say so or do something, like the President, that makes it right or the law. i have heard more than once if you score over 120 on your police entrance/ IQ exam, they won’t take you because your too smart. It’s really sad.

The video replay referee jury will not take long to decide who is guilty here. Those two cops were looking for trouble and the other cop would have tried to take a rider out from the other side. Check the history of that rookie cop, he played football somewhere before. The rookie cop could have easily stopped or slowed down and avoided any confrontation. He made the confrontation and youtube is here to stay to defend everyone when need be. That cop should no longer be a cop, he just wasted all of the training and studying. Perhaps they can make him an undercover cop where he can beat on those he is investigating, that would be better than street patrol, keep this rookie off the streets, get his face on the internet so we all know who to be aware of, he is dangerous.

I happened to catch a couple parts of the show today, one guest – can’t recall the his name -
was talking about civilian defense preparedness – but then going beyond that and advocating
the “sport” of cop and military shooting, referring to them as “moose” or game and
making lots of jokes, referring to his wall of “trophies” such as badges, etc. This kind of
attitude is reckless and unprofessional, these are exactly the kinds of soundbites
the Neo-Con media is salivating to take from this show and use as evidence to label you in
the public mind as “terrorists.” Definitely a strong civilian defense is necessary, but this
kind of approach is counterproductive and outright stupid, and only going to result in
your being labeled as the inciters of violence, not a peaceful and progressive public interest group.
Violence should be the last resort and only in necessary defense. It’s not fun and it’s not funny.
And telling the general public things like “if you’ve learned your training you’ll always come
back alive” is irresponsible and not true. Civilian forces fighting military power are in for a
hard battle and many will die. Violence should be the very last resort and only under attack.
This kind of attitude is only going to discredit all the progress this movement has made
and can easily be construed to make you public enemy #1. It will be used by the government
to manufacture false charges and harass and prosecute you as “homegrown terror.”

It would appear that the time has come for all organized protests in America to start videotaping their events as a way of protecting its participants. If more citizens start carrying video cameras, or other picture taking devices in public, e.g. cell phones, etc., then the police will be more aware that we are watching for such public displays of brutality. Hopefully, a camera-armed public will lessen the amount of excessive force used by police we seem to be witnessing in the news today.

It looks like all Americans will have to start carrying video cameras to protect ourselves from these scumbags. Things would be a lot worse if it were not for video cameras. However, the day may come when when even cameras will not control them. We must be ready to go against them and win.

Damn good post! You hit the nail right on the head! I’ve been carrying my video camera with me everywhere I go. Without video evidence, the police will lie and stop at nothing to cover up any wrong doing on their part.
By the way, I called the Ozark police dept. last night and told them that there was a little girl throwing flowers onto the street and they better get a couple officers down there right away to taze her. They got pissed, but I felt a whole lot better!

If he lost his badge ang gun over this incident, than he is obviously guilty of something. Should he not be in jail? We need to stick together.
