Cop Who Brutally Beat Female Bartender Receives Probation

Editor’s note: The judge in the case gave the lame excuse that sentening the sadistic cop, Anthony Abbate, wouldn’t prevent him from getting drunk and hitting people in the future. Abbate remains on the police force in Chicago, demonstrating that crime does indeed pay.
(WGN-AM)- A Chicago police officer was sentenced to two years probation Tuesday for pummeling a woman who was tending bar, even though prosecutors produced a previously unseen video showing him beating someone else at the bar hours earlier.
Anthony Abbate — who declined to say anything to the judge before he was sentenced — could have gotten up to five years for beating Karolina Obrycka in February of 2007. The attack was captured by the bar’s security camera and the video was shown around the world.
Judge John Fleming said he decided against jail time, explaining he did not believe the crime was serious enough and that throwing Abbate in prison would not be a deterrent to others.

The judge didn’t believe the crime was serious enough for jail, or that it wouldn’t be a deterrent to others? The judge needs glasses. Who does he think will police the police if HE doesn’t? Cops are becoming The Enemy of the citizens – and it’s their own fault. They aren’t “special” because their cops. They’re still human beings and if they didn’t have their handy-dandy badges and guns there would be thousands behind bars. This is yet another disgusting display of abuse in so many areas.

The judge was the wrong one here. When an assault happens, it should not matter what job the perpetrator held at all, only the crime should be looked at equally for all people. The judge made a bad decision on this one and it should be appealled and overturned. His fellow officers helping to cover up his actions, you should be very ashamed of yourselves for protecting an obvious law breaker and criminal with a badge. For shame on all you for helping this crooked cop and his drunken woman beating ways. What if the bartender had been your mom, sister, wife, or daughter. Would you be protecting him then guys, I don’t think so. You are all unethical and immoral and are not upholding your oath of office. If you can’t keep your oaths and your word, you don’t need to be in the job of “LAW ENFORCEMENT” – remember that word, it used to mean something. Who does she think she is a person with rights or what . She should go and apologize to him for having to be on probation. I think the chicago department should be called and this fine upstanding police officer should be commended and promoted to chief of police . Let me be the first to say WTF!!!!! If it had been a private citizen they would have gotten FIVE YEARS JAIL TIME then Probation. What does the judge mean not serious enough. He also is still on the job. He committed an obvious crime this DISqualifies him to be a cop anymore. This is blatant protection from his fellow brethren. And the judge deciding against jail time because it would not be a detterrent to others. What is that? Yes it would be. That is why we are suppose to put people in jail for committing crimes. The justice system in the US is totally fucked up. Just the other day I saw a documentary about a mexican woman being sentenced to 90 years without parole after a child in her care choked on a piece of paper. The evidence presented by the defence was totally convincing, but the racist jury had already made their mind up and the criminal DA wanted a good cereer move on a case that got a lot of press attention. A re-hearing in 30 years… That’s not justice. That’s filling up your prisons, as empty prisons cost money.

Judge John Fleming said he decided against jail time, explaining he did not believe the crime was serious enough (that’s total bs. If some guy can get arrested in some state I think it might have been WV for fanning flatulence at a cop, this IS serious enough for jail time. The judge must be corrupt too.) and that throwing Abbate in prison would not be a deterrent to others. (This is no reason not to put him in jail! We’ve been putting criminals in jail since criminals existed but there are still criminals around today.)

If he was married to (or even living with) the woman, he would have been subject to the Lautenberg Amendment. This would have made him ineligible to retain his job. Too bad there is no “equal protection under the law” in this instance. There is no reason for an off duty Cop to beat on ANYBODY except for reasons of self-defense, drunk or not. He should be fired and the Judge should also be relieved of his duties.

Its not worth loosing your teeth for this woman. The people in the bar did the right thing. One guy appeared to film the incident for use as evidence. The others tried to reason with him without engaging the man in physical combat. This would have given him an excuse to attack them also.
It was the Judge who made the mistake in encouraging this sort of behavior by not sentencing him to prison.

If the victim were a black male – then the black male would have been sentenced to jail by the same judge. Nobody would care. The only thing that is outraging you is that the victim is a WHITE WOMAN. So you choose to relate to the situation and pay attention to it.
People have learned to rely on police entities a little too much. In exchange for that; the police do what they want to. And the judges back them all the way. …{sigh}… This is really sad. This is a black-eye on the Chicago police department and the Chicago judicial system. This cannot lead to anything good. I know that many police departments have a few “bad apples” in them– police officers that have let their badge and authority “go to their head”, and they have become brutal thugs. It would be best if police departments everywhere would eliminate these “bad apples” from their ranks– ie., stop protecting them just because they have a badge, and at least terminate their employment. If this is not done, then you will have a lot of good police officers getting killed when the public finally decides to take matters into their own hands.
And the judge?– There must be a way to impeach him, and the people of Chicago should start that process immediately. At a minimum, every concerned citizen should write a letter to the Judicial review board to inform them of there concerns.
This is the kind of government activities that can lead to civil unrest, or even rioting. This was a very foolish move by the Chicago authorities. They had better do something fast to fix this.
