Cops Attack Anti-war Demonstrators in Rochester, New York

Funk the War, a demonstration to demand an end to the war in Afghanistan and for increased education funding, was violently attacked by police this evening. At least 10 people were arrested, many are still in custody right now. One of the arrestees was reported to be bleeding from her face after being tackled by two cops into the the base of a light pole, she is currently sitting in the back of a police car without access to medical attention.

to top it off, Rochester is famous for being a city where many deaf people arrange to move, so they can use sign language among friends.
If the police are giving messages via announcement systems, the deaf people could easily miss what’s going on. My grandparents were both deaf, and read lips instead of signing, and they wouldn’t hear a dispersal message.

The police are controlled by the elite government, and other forms of secret elite people.
You have to organise millions for a protest, take months to form a protest and take it to a park.
We did it in OZ with the (sorry march) remember people power has overthrown governments.

Apparently they were blocking a fire truck, a cop tried to move the group onto a sidewalk and was run down. That’s what our local news is reporting.
anyways, rochester has fallen from what was once a middle class, blue collar workers city to a slum. We used to have Kodak, Xerox, Bosh and Lomb manufacturing. Now we have strip malls and dying malls, high crime and drug gangs.
the town of greece, next to the city just had their police chief arrested for corruption and a rochester rookie cop was shot in the back of the head while working a scene a few months ago.
the cops over re-acted becuase they are used to dealing with drug thugs, killers, a mafia essentially. These kids probably should have protested some other place instead of downtown drug infested streets. Maybe a local mall or someplace a bit safer to begin with?

I lived in Rochester for the first 34 years of my life. I moved to Texas about 5 years ago for my job. I know what you mean when you talk of Rochester becoming a ghost town. At one time it was THE manufacturing hub of the nation with all those blue-chip corporations you mentioned having their corporate headquarters all located there. I go home every year for the holidays and each year there are more boarded up buildings and empty lots. Sad, very sad. The mall in Greece now has police officers patrolling the mall? WTF? I forget how depressing the grey skies and freezing temps can be in winter there. I do miss the cold Labatt’s and a garbage plate from Nick-Tahoe’s though!!!

Hi all, I’m from Rochester. I skipped the march, but know many of the people involved and saw many of them shorty after the incident.
One part of this story that we really should think about is the fact that the very first person arrested was the single black person in the crowd. In many ways, this incident is not very exceptional. Police brutality happens every day on the streets of Rochester, it’s just not usually so public, caught on tape and done to white people. We need to make the links between the way SDS was assaulted yesterday, the fact that black and latino people are constantly under the thumb of police brutality and how the wars in the middle east are founded on anti-arab racism.

I have heard through family that still lives there that he was elected mayor a few years back. Yes!! Those marchers are really brave. Maybe when the cops tried to shove them away to disperse, all should have sat down on the sidewalk. I predict many more of these demonstrations soon. What is needed are very large mixed martial artists to march. Why not recruit demonstrators from all the Gold’s gyms to break the news blackout. Not march, not demonstrate, not look like we have no clue of what we want. It is simple what we want; Our FREEDOM back!! You do not or should not need a “permit” to protest, because it is our given rights.

As I said this kind of police brutality only goes on where there are disarmed slaves. That kind of police brutality would not go on where people are armed. If the police tried it they would have their asses handed to them. An armed society is a polite society. Armed citizens keep police honest. Police tend to uphold their oath to the constitution when there are armed citizens. Where there are disarmed slaves the police know they can do anything they want without fear of repercussion. The police need to have a healthy respect for the citizens they are policing and the only thing anyone respects is the gun. Open carry is the only answer for this country. Tyranny fears the armed citizen. The government must fear the people it governs once again before it governs with respect and honesty.

I have to agree with you. The people need to be armed. I bet if protestors was carrying firearms, the police attitudes would change. On another note, there are more protestors then cops there. Hell, maybe it is time for the protestors to start pushing back with the same force the cops do. I am not saying there should be violence, but, if the police overstep their bounds and abuse American Citizens, then, it is up to the Citizens to defend themselves.

I work about 40 minutes west of Rochester and the local radio stations are saying that they blocked the traffic in the streets and blocked a fire truck going to a call. When a police officer tried to get them out of the way of the fire truck he was supposedly shoved so they took it as asauslting a police officer and started arresting and apparently abusing them. No mention of a woman that has blood gushing from her head and still sitting in a police car. Not surprising though that they left that out. They said that the people were arrested for unlawful assembly and did not have a permit to do so. Funny that you need to get a permit to do a constitutional right.

I don’t like the swearing-innuendo of swearing or whatever. They lost the battle with that word as far as I am concerned. If we lose our civility with one another, there is nothing to fight for. In fact, I believe that the morality of each individual is to account here for the situation we are in right now. FURTHERMORE this call is currently being investigated because the driver of the truck slowed down, coffee in hand, to smile and wave at the officer pressed against us, AND THE SIREN OF THAT FRIRETRUCK STOPPED BY THE NEXT BLOCK! listen for it on the video! we backed up for that shit as soon as we saw it and it was still a long ways away, those were techniques used by the cops that we saw at the g20, with cops actually driving ambulances, exploiting protestors helpful attitudes to such departments

I see.. from watching that video link above I conclude this. The revolution of the 60’s and 70’s failed. It failed for a prethla of reasons. the simplest way to understand this is to compare it to 1776. Anyone know what the laws actually are? Do you seriously need some bullshit permit just to protest something? So if they don’t like your content, they just deny the damned permit, hmm it’s as if the constitution specifically tried to prevent this and yet here it is and blindly the ninny’s shout “It’s the Law” (sarcastic AJ voice needed here). Some laws are not worthy of being obeyed.
On another note. This was not a vicious attack by police in any sense of the word in my opinion. I’ve been arrested before and I can tell you when there aren’t any cameras they do whatever they want and treat everyone like dirt if you give them any shit whatsoever or if they just happen to feel like it.
IF these kids were blocking traffic and and shoving cops, they were sort of asking for a problem, right or wrong, you poke a pit bull in the eye, he’s going to bite you. That doesn’t justify more cops coming in to bash on innocent people after wards, but I understand. Both sides could have done things differently it seems to me. A few dumb moves and on both sides makes it a mess for everyone.
I would like to see an organized ARMED march, I can’t help but wonder how these thugs would act around grown men, equally armed and just as serious about returning anything that comes their way.
People are going to start learning that nothing is going to happen to thug cops and unfair beat downs. Future protests are going to get much more interesting. If I were in law enforcement, I’d start to think about that and look for a way to do the right thing from within. If you care anything about yourself and your country you’ll start taking things more seriously.

I don’t hate the police at all. What i do hate is when they suppress the first ammendment. Lets try this again to see if it gets censored. I was watching a old TV series that pertains to a witch named Samatha. Anyhow. George Washington was brought to the present by her aunt. He walked out of the house and was in the park giving a speech. Now why would this be cencored off this website. It was a good TV series, and enforces that our Forefathers knew that American people should protect the U.S. Constitution. Everyone should walk around with the Constitution on their shirts when they do these protests, so if someone wants to see their permit for speaking and living freely, they can just direct the attention to the obvious truths. Too bad the government and their dogs view it only as a quaint document from by-gone days that only matter in history class. We should remind them who they serve. It’s the easiest thing in the world to do, if you want cops to come and arrest you there are many ways to accomplish that. you sit there at your computer making judgements on something, when you have only been presented with half of the story, (there are two sides to every one) when you break laws, the police come, and yes, you will be arrested. I agree with these protesters as far as the wars we are in are unjust. I do not agree with their tactics. They were breaking the law, and abusing the rights of their fellow citizens. Apparently they think their message justifies their means, well I do not agree with that.
I suspect that if the cops “put their hands on you”, you would likely piss yourself.

It almost seems like they are doing this on purpose, to prod us to react in the inevitable way, so they can use that as an excuse to label anyone who stands up to them as terrorists, and this justify their horrendous behavior, and then continue to subjugate us all into complete submission. Soon they’ll send out their mercenary dogs to collect the guns and ammo from the citizens , ‘for the protection of the citizens’ in times of unrest…that won’t be for another two or three years though…hopefully never, but as things are going, I can’t see how it won’t happen.

I was just wondering, all the comments here seemed to support the protesters. I personally feel they were in violation of the law by marching down the street. Then through clever editing, we only see the police response to the protesters provoking them. If you look carefully you can see several protesters disobeying police orders, that in my opinion were for their own safety. I’m sure the protesters knew exactly what they were getting into, and provoked the police to try and support their cause. Did the police force overreact? probably. But the better question is this, does this sites moderator censor the responses that it posts? I think so.

I want to let you folks know that although I don’t agree with the police using excessive force and I don’t believe that they should have arrested anyone due to the fact that no one was violent I do, however, agree that the police should have gotten involved. These students, although peacefully protesting, were disrupting traffic by walking down the street. As we all know you need permission for that because you disrupt normal daily activity. I encourage you folks to call the chief of police out there and let him know that it should have been handled more peacefully by the police. I didn’t see the police make a PA announcement telling the protestors to get on the sidewalk. Sure, I’m playing both sides, but you have to look at everything.

In my opinion these protesters were not acting lawfully. They were marching down streets blocking traffic, and breaking the peace. I as a citizen have a right to use the roadway for its intended use, to drive on, be it going to work, or the corner store. they claim the right to block the street as a first amendment right? protesters tramping on the rights of other citizens is wrong, and in my opinion they earned their arrests.When you resist arrest, you can expect to get roughed up.
We are a nation of laws, when you break them there are consequences. I have nothing against protesters, I feel inclined to join in, however you must do it in an orderly way, and respect the rights of your fellow citizens.

I notice that the video seems to have skipped over the parts which led to some of these arrests. what were these people doing BEFORE they were arrested? we only see the cuffs being put on, nothing prior. as if, oh the cops are arresting them for no reason other than exercising their 1st amendment rights. what about the rights of other citizens who just want to get on with their day, while these idiots block traffic? Now I gotta tell you, if I were a cop arresting someone for good reason, and a crowd surrounding me, I would find that particularly threatening.
There is a right way to protest, this is not it. They seem to want to protest for peace, I am all for that, I do not believe in the wars we are in. they seemed to be doing fine, until they decided to block traffic by marching down the street, and disregard other peoples rights.

Funny all of the “pre-arrest” footage was convenietly not shown. But they did include a short piece in the middle that showed the “peaceful” protestors throwing items at the police, who appear in the video to at first be attempting to clear the street of these hippies walking down the middle of it. It’s common fucking knowledge that you can’t walk down the middle of the street. These hips baited the cops into this and the cops fell for it. I’ve seen it more than once.
What most of you need to be aware of is that Most cops, especially the one typing this, agree with alot of the same ideas as you.
If you don’t believe in any laws go live in Congo, they have no enforced laws, and we see how well that works out for them.
Those of you who talk about using “militant” tactics to express your views to the gov’t and the world. So what makes you better than the tyrant? I believe in fighting, but I believe in Defense, not a pre-emptive strike on the country we all love.
I know all of the problems with police, I see them EVERYDAY, but I also know that there are good cops left, who don’t enforce every little law made up now days, but operate on a premise of respect, You show a slight bit of respect and ASK what they need you to do to remedy the situation and you will get respect MOST of the time. But, when you start yelling and throwing shit and chanting idiotic things you change the game, the cops are told to move those people out of the street, then someone gets arrested, it is now considered a crime scene and the first step is now security of that, meaning get all these angry, smelly hippies out of the way before they start *Oh My!* throwing things (like they did in the video).
I know that this site and many others advocate that you don’t have to respond to anything a cop says to you, don’t ID yourself or anything…well thats not gonna work out well for you. And, those of you idiots who go over the edge and decide to “kill a nazi cop”…please bring that fight my way, may the best man win. Not all of us are Fat, lazy, doughnut eaters who are poorly trained, some of us pride ourselves in training and value our real combat experience.

Take the stills of the police from the video and place their faces on a poster and post them in public places, in the local towns as well so that their neighbors might see them as the criminals that they are. Place them in the soccer fields, football fields, schools and other public places so that their children might see their parents for the creeps that they are.

Why don’t research this a bit. The protesters did not obtain a permit, were walking down the middle of the street obstructing traffic. Some of that traffic included a firetruck on its way to a 911 call and the protesters still refused to move. This video has been edited. Another video shows the police officer being shoved by several people using the wooden banner. They have every right to protest but no right to break the law and endanger other ppl. Would you be ok if the someone died because the firetruck was unable to get there? Get a permit and follow the rules. Why is it always people on the left clamoring for peace that are the most violent when it comes to protesting?

They got out of the way of the firetruck, because firefighters are not the problem. You can see it at the beginning, they stopped, reversed and got out of the way of the firetruck, and then as it passed, they continued onward.

According to accounts by the firemen the protesters were pushing the officer using the wooden banner towards the firetruck. One officer was hit by a protester with a drum. You go ahead and walk down the middle of the street, obstruct traffic and then disobey a police order to get out of the street. I’m know some cops might be overzealous but when you disobey a cop while breaking the law don’t be surprised you got “beat up”. Now instead of drawing good attention to the anti war sentiment they have drawn bad attention to the police. Geez I wonder if that was the intent all along?

The protesters were fine, even without an easily obtained permit, all they had to do was clear the street. They were looking for trouble not peace, and they found exactly what they were looking for. The whole thing was a staged event to generate publicity.
