Cops Bust Up 80 Year Old Woman’s Yard Sale

The rest of the story, including allegations that police threatened to arrest the 80-year-old homeowner because she didn’t have a permit? Not so much.
The facts are these: After 60 years in Holly Hill, Pauline Liles is moving to Tennessee to live with her daughter’s family. Her husband, Jack, is already there, having suffered a stroke that has immobilized him. Pauline, an old hand at yard sales, was hoping to sell most of their stuff before joining him next week.
She advertised the three-day sale in the newspaper, but when she went to the city first thing Wednesday to purchase the $5 permit, it was denied. The city currently allows just two such sales in a year, and city officials said Liles had already met her limit.

You need a permit to plant vegetables? What state do you live in? Our small farmers selling food are under attack. There are current food safety bills before Congress such as HR 2749, HR875, S425, HR759, etc., waiting to be passed.

Here in rural France the villages have vide grenier ( empty the barn) sales where all the locals sell all thier stuff on tables that run all through the village or on a field. It’s great fun. Occasionaly one can swipe a bargain. Last time I bought a statue of the Virgin Mary belonging to the chaps grandma that he found by chance hidden behind stone in the chimney, two kilos of potatoes and trousers, all for 17.50 euros. I could sell the statue for double the price in a antique shop. For sure the goverment would have a riot on thier hands if they dared to dabble with this tradition ! It’s only once a year in each village but you can pay a few euros and get a pitch in the other villages So in theory one could do dozens of sales.
In England they have car boot sales which I have never been to because I believe a lot of stolen goods get sold there.

The last I knew you could look in the classifieds to see where a yard sale was happening.
For many it is a favorite past time and hobby to see what kind of treasures you could find.
As they say, One mans trash is another mans treasure.
Some states don’t have this practice. I think they need to abolish some of these old useless laws that allow bashers like this to spoil peoples rights like this.

Homes are becoming like printers. Printers are $40 but the ink that you need to buy over and over again is $50. A friend of mine put half down on a house and had a $900/mo. mortgage. Her monthly payment is over $1,800. Over half goes pay taxes and insurance. Pretty soon, they’ll give away homes just to get the tax money. The local jurisdictions (look at the news about the mass exodus from NYC because of taxes this week). It happening everywhere. You have much more control over local governments, and need to shut that crap down by asking very pointed questions from local candidates, attend local government events and don’t elect someone just by watching commercials.

5 dollars, for a permission slip to sell your old crap, on your own property… they do that same crap around here in NC, and we just setup, and sell… or take it to a local flea market. The last time we had a police officer show up, my dad stood with his 357 at his side, and I had my judge on my side… on our own property, in an open carry state… and the police suddenly became polite and told us of the law, and we laughed… and it went no farther than that. I guess it helps that we have already shot people on our property before… the police tend to remember you don’t take much crap. I had one guy come on our property, to pick up a laptop I had done work to, which he refused to pay for, grabbing it up and he started to threaten us…he’d called me earlier and was upset because I was charging him to fix a laptop his wife had dropped off to me to fix, imagine that, paying for a service… any way… I still remember him telling my dad that “I’m a good shot and I’m faster than you” as he was running back to his car, and the look of horror on his face when he heard my gun, placed right at his ear, chamber a round. I kept him, in the yard, until the police came. The police assessed the situation, and told him… did you see the size of that gun!
My point in all this, is people will take advantage of you, if you ALLOW them to… if someone threatens me or my family on our property, we won’t think twice about shooting them. Once the police realize this as well, they tend to treat you with a new level of respect.

I like estate sales better than yard sales – better stuff. I kind of understand, KIND OF, as there were people in my town who would host yards sales two, three times a month and even a couple who would have them EVERY week-end. It got ridiculous. They got sloppy too by leaving their “goods” on the car port or porch and visible. It looked terrible for the neighbors to view and was an attraction for theft.
That said, our nation has gone from PC behavior to Gestapo behavior in less than a generation. I wonder what Amerika will be like in the next decade or so when neighbors and little kids are encouraged to snitch on others. Scary stuff people.

That’s really weird. Here in Europe people sell their stuff all the time. We have year markets in virtually every village and town. If an official tried to harass a old lady for something like this they would be a riot. If people want to sell their stuff they can do it right from their home or put an advert on a postcard in the local shop or post all their stuff with photos on the internet. Local cops would never dream of interfering because their job relies on the local people cooperating. If they upset the community their job gets harder.
There’s no permit needed to sell stuff from your home or garage. What do these US permits look like? Do they have a number like 666 and state that no one can trade without this Mark? Just like the words of the song by REM. “If you tolerate this, then your children will be next”
