BREA – Drivers along the 57 freeway near the Tonner Canyon exit will pass a commercial vehicle checkpoint from 6 a.m. to noon today.
For the second day, officers from several local, county and federal agencies will pull big rigs off the northbound side of the freeway to check for violations. Officials wrote 205 citations during Wednesday’s six-hour checkpoint.
If it rains, the checkpoint will be cancelled.
Brea Commercial Enforcement Officer Mark Kane said traffic flow could be impacted, but officers mitigate potential traffic jams by waving vehicles past the Tonner Canyon Road exit when trucks back up on the exit ramp and get close to the freeway.
Of the vehicles cited Wednesday, 17 were kept off the road because of safety issues such as faulty brakes.
No arrests were made, Kane said.
Kane, who has spent the last nine of his 20 years with Brea police in commercial enforcement, said the day shaped up much like previous checkpoints at this location. About a dozen checkpoints are held countywide annually, two of them at the Tonner Canyon exit.
