The idea of the weapon is to “create a heating sensation that repels individual adversaries”, according to the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD) in Quantico, Virginia, which develops less-lethal weapons for the US military and coastguard.
Tests with a rifle-mounted infrared laser, carried out at a US air force lab near Dayton, Ohio, have determined a combination of laser pulse power and wavelength that causes an alarming, hot sensation on the skin, but which stops short of causing a burn, says JNLWD project engineer Wesley Burgei.

I saw this weapon on the discovery, history, or nat-geo…dont remember which one exactly. I do remember though, that it was based on microwave tech, not lasers so much. The episode also had some sort of powder that turned into goo that they intend to spray any ground with to keep even trucks from being able to cross the area. They also showed the crazy sound thing that hurts your ears…. I’ve also seen shot gun rounds that shoot a small tazer…. I honestly would rather deal with the regular bullets. This “less lethal” BS is just sadistic.

The problem is that there is no organization, fine and dandy to stand up for your rights but if you do it alone, you dont’ have a chance in hell of winning the fight. How does this cause a burning sensation through CLOTHING without actually burning the clothes?
Seems to me if it works through clothing it will penetrate the skin and cause INTERNAL damage?
If aimed at the eyes can it cause EYESIGHT problems?
The article mentions eyesight but points out it is merely ‘a problem’. If a standard laser-pointer (that does not cause a burning sensation) can cause permanent blindness I don’t see how this project won’t.

It’s called a microwave beam, that is tuned and focused. In fact, it was shown on that modern weapons show. All these fancy weapons can be thwarted with a simple device called an EMP gun. I should feel privileged since generally all I have to do is say two sentences and I am either filtered out or manually taken down afterwards while in comparison this that I am attached to remains. If it’s an infrared pulse beam, it could easy damage your eyes without you even knowing about it. It could “pop” your retina causing irreversible damage to your eyesight. Infrared beams are generally more dangerous than regular light beams because you don’t know when an infrared beam is hitting your eyes until its too late. If a visible laser beam struck your eye, you would blink and therefore would protect your eyesight from being permanently damaged. Not so for infrared and ultraviolet laser beams though.
