Refugees in Serbia broke through a line of police on the Croatian border on Thursday as thousands continue to pour into Europe from Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East.
The refugees arrived by bus and on foot, determined to cross over into Croatia and enter Germany and Western Europe.
Police in Tovarnik and Bezdan were unable to hold back the refugees.
Officials estimate nearly 10,000 refugees have crossed over since Hungary closed its border with Serbia earlier this week.
“Croatia will not be able to receive more people,” the country’s Interior Minister, Ranko Ostojic, told reporters.
Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic put the country’s military on the highest level of combat readiness in response to the tidal wave of illegal immigrants.
