CRU Commented Source Code Tells Story

When the CRU emails first made it into news stories, there was immediate reaction from the head of CRU, Dr. Phil Jones over this passage in an email:

In one leaked e-mail, the research center’s director, Phil Jones, writes to colleagues about graphs showing climate statistics over the last millennium. He alludes to a technique used by a fellow scientist to “hide the decline” in recent global temperatures. Some evidence appears to show a halt in a rise of global temperatures from about 1960, but is contradicted by other evidence which appears to show a rise in temperatures is continuing.
Jones wrote that, in compiling new data, he had “just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline,” according to a leaked e-mail, which the author confirmed was genuine.
Dr. Jones responded.
However, Jones denied manipulating evidence and insisted his comment had been taken out of context. “The word ‘trick’ was used here colloquially, as in a clever thing to do. It is ludicrous to suggest that it refers to anything untoward,” he said in a statement Saturday.
Ok fine, but how Dr. Jones, do you explain this?
There’s a file of code also in the collection of emails and documents from CRU. A commenter named Neal on climate audit writes:
People are talking about the emails being smoking guns but I find the remarks in the code and the code more of a smoking gun. The code is so hacked around to give predetermined results that it shows the bias of the coder. In other words make the code ignore inconvenient data to show what I want it to show. The code after a quick scan is quite a mess. Anyone with any pride would be to ashamed of to let it out public viewing. As examples [of] bias take a look at the following remarks from the MANN code files:

You can claim an email you wrote years ago isn’t accurate saying it was “taken out of context”, but a programmer making notes in the code does so that he/she can document what the code is actually doing at that stage, so that anyone who looks at it later can figure out why this function doesn’t plot past 1960. In this case, it is not allowing all of the temperature data to be plotted. Growing season data (summer months when the new tree rings are formed) past 1960 is thrown out because “these will be artificially adjusted to look closer to the real temperatures”, which implies some post processing routine.
Spin that, spin it to the moon if you want. I’ll believe programmer notes over the word of somebody who stands to gain from suggesting there’s nothing “untowards” about it.
Either the data tells the story of nature or it does not. Data that has been “artificially adjusted to look closer to the real temperatures” is false data, yielding a false result.

These first two files are dated 1/18/2000, and the map24 file on 11/10/1999 so it fits timeline-wise with Dr. Jones email where he mentions “Mike’s Nature trick” which is dated 11/16/1999, six days later.

I’ll give Dr. Jones and CRU the benefit of the doubt, maybe these are not “untowards” issues, but these things scream for rational explanations. Having transparency and being able to replicate all this years ago would have gone a long way towards either correcting problems and/or assuaging concerns.

I smell a huge anti-global climate change agenda and partisian position about this subject matter on this website. The broughaha over these supposedly profound e-mails seem to be a red herring strategy desperately trying to detract readers and viewers from real evidence and observations.
When you jump off of the Alex Jones’ site (and similar sites that pump out the same ANTI-global climate change agenda), and then open up your computer to other data streams on the internet, you get a much different story, a story suffering less fear and denial.
Hey! Don’t be a one trick pony with three legs. Think beyond your belief. There are several sites (starting for example with the BBC) that clearly compare older photos of glaciers from all over the world with newer photos taken from the same position. The difference is absolutely astounding! Sorry! Been there! Seen that! 98% of the glaciers on his planet are in full blown retreat. To hell with the politics of he said/she said e-mails. This is a red herring that Jones’ is putting out to attenuate his personal fears onthis issue. Be care what you buy here. Think!
There are also satellite photos and measurements (easily available on my computers) that more than suggest that something very big is happening to the global climate on this planet. Somethng is wrong! Very wrong!
Praying to Jeeezass!… or ram jammin’ your consumer citizen head up your glorious arse-hole is not going to make the evidence of major global climate changes go away.

Just because glaciers are in “retreat” does not mean that human beings are responsible. The premise that we are responsible for any sort of climate shift is the primary sticking point most of us GW deniers adhere to.
While it may be true that the glaciers are in full retreat, it has happened many times before and will happen many times in the future. I have viewed the data of glacier retreat and I am amused that the footage is always in summer. When I look at the vast, miles thick, continents of ice in the north and south poles I don’t see any substantial changes occurring in the next, oh lets say, a billion years.
Additionally we deniers of GW are more often better researched than most of the GW proponents who’s sole basis of “fact” is a movie, put forward, by a more than dubious source. Read (al gore)

I find what you have said to be somewhat less than enlightening. Technically yes in someplaces in the workld temperature is rising. Other places the Avg is falling. What does this mean Climate change! Change to what? Probably not what we have been told. Truthfully the data from the past 50 years suggests that the poles have been slowly shifting and the weather is merely shifting with the axial tilt of our planet. This will obviously have an effect on perceived climate of certain areas. What will happen to our climate? Several theories include; Global warming, this theory is supported by those scientists who are looking for private research grants from coporations. There is the new iceage theory which compels some governments to stock seed banks and prepare for evacuation. There are many more theories. The point to all of this is that Climate change is real are humans doing it? It is doubtful that we have much more of an effect that making the air close to the earth too dirty to breath somedays. The botton line is simple find better ways to provide the energy the human race seeks, stop raping every natural resource of this world and stop pointing fingers and mocking and laughing at anyone with a different view point. If you are not a part of the solution you are part of the problem.

I also have a telescope, a solar filter and a camera adapter that allows me to take my own pictures that document the LACK of sunspots and I know enough about astrophysics to understand the significance of that. Add to that fact that I’m also a licensed ham operater and follow solar activity all the time because of the way it affects radio communications. The sun either does or it doesn’t ionize the ‘F’ layer of the ionosphere, which affects HF communications.

You really don’t get it do you. OF COURSE the climate is changing. IT always has and it always will. What they would have you believe is that its because of all of the dirty little carbon emitters around the world. This is an argument for depopulation. Humanity is the disease, depopulation is the cure. Humans emit carbon all over the place after all.
Nobody (in the main stream) is talking about the relationship that the sun has to global temperatures. IT seems as though they have completely overlooked the potential correlation between the sun and global temperatures. It is absent throughout the debate. Look at temperature data from different planets in our solar system. Is there any corresponding rise or decline in their surface temperatures when compared to that of the earth?
I agree that we shouldn’t politicize science. However, part of that is getting back to genuine scientific inquiry. I don’t believe that the scientists who wrote these emails are practicing anything even close to that.

I’ve scanned through many of these e-mails at http://www.eastangliaemails.com/ which had a nice search engine for the text. I wish someone would break into Monsanto…now that would be interesting…lol. I actually do feel bad for these scientists having their “dirty laundry” aired for the world to see…just how mean they are to each other.
What was clear was that there was a problem with the code and they needed to tweek it because of something known as the “divergence problem”. Apparently it is known that Keith Briffa’s maximum latewood tree ring density proxy diverges from the temperature records after 1960 and because of this divergence the model had to be tweeked. The authors of that paper have always recommend not using the post 1960 part of their reconstruction so not including it was not considered wrong. Personally I think trying to calculate that much “global” data would of been impossible in any model. There can be no accurate conclusion other than saying, “ya know, we just don’t know…we’re not that advanced yet”…but that isn’t how the game is played.
Another thing that is clear is that these scientists whole heartedly believe in what they are doing and it is not part of any conspiracy on their part…unless it’s to keep their jobs. They seem to have their share of detractors and people who were making their lives hellish. The FOIA requests were in the double-digits according to one e-mail…so their feet were being held to the fire by their peers. Steve McIntyre seems to have had a pitchfork aimed at them. I think he should aim it Al Gore for starting this hype in the first place..someone please take away his peace prize…as well as Obama’s. In any case they can’t prove global warming is due to people because it has started cooling. Face it folks it was the sun — that is why the other planets in our solar system were heating up as well.

I just scanned some more of these e-mails….on the AR4 project it appears they definitely skewed it so the result wouldn’t make it look like global warming was a muted affair. Another words science isn’t about find the facts based on long term data.

There is a preference in the atmospheric observations chapter of IPCC
AR4 to stay with the 1961-1990 normals. This is partly because a change
of normals confuses users, e.g. anomalies will seem less positive than
before if we change to newer normals, so the impression of global
warming will be muted. Also we may wish to wait till there are 30 years
of satellite data, i.e until we can compute 1981-2010 normals, which
will then be globally complete for some parameters like sea surface
temperature.

Actually, if I were to take you literally and only that, I would have a hard time living. You see, I live in the world of entertainment and much of that is just talking to get my audience to respond to what I want of them. Then again, because I do know when to keep my mouth shut (depending upon the guy I might be with as to what he wants me do to with my mouth, of course–Am I bad or just naughty?–hehe), I made a good life for myself. Actually, you are correct overall. In addition to running a remote weather station in Byers, CO for over a decade, taking my own pictures of the sun with a Celestron CG 9.25 Schmidt-Cassegrain folded optic on a Losmandy equatorial mount with clock drive and ra/dec controls, possessing and using a ham operator’s license and having a solid background in physics and astrophysics, I also wrote code for a living for the last 25 years – in XBase, Visual Foxpro, C++, PowerBuilder, T-SQL, VB and C#. Those code comments expose the LIE and are placed in the code so that people who come along later to maintain that code – will know what’s up, why things are being calculated the way they are. Those comments expose the true purpose and INTENT of the code, which is to calculate BAD NUMBERS that support a lie.

The only way to find that link is to search for “climate research unit” and then filter through the 10 million articles that have been written and imported into this site.

Ok. I’ve read most of the e-mails. They mock skeptics and call people who question their theories “deniers.” They act more like religious cult members than scientists. They completely throw out the scientific method and instead try to prove a preconceived thesis. They sure do crap all over science. Where would science and knowledge be if people were not skeptical? lol these guys are jokers.

Yep.. And they admitted to manipulating data – repeatedly. Now on their website (realclimate.org) they are only allowing posts by people who either agree with their cult or people who post unintelligent rants. Any intelligent post that runs contrary to their beliefs and theories are not allowed to be posted. I keep seeing them even use non-words like “denyalists” to describe people who do not believe man-made CO2 is causing global warming. Doesn’t matter if you agree the climate is changing, because you are wrong if you don’t say man is the reason through using oil and coal (they even attack the oil companies in their rants on the website, but they fail to mention that a large part of their funding is from said energy companies).
This whole thing has me roflmfao.

I’m a programmer, and I find this code appalling. I would also like to note that, they can manipulate any data they need from a third party server as well, so any data they present without full source-code on how they gather the data, can be determined false by proxy.

If any of you ever tried to make statistical approach to some chaotic event or process, then you will know data will not “do” what you want.
If results based on data “go” in the wrong way, you first check if there is an error, and if there is no error in the code, then you are almost sure your initial presumption is wrong.
Tweaking with data to prove your presumption means following:
1. Anybody who does that is very bad in whatever he is doing
2. Anybody who does that is trying to deceive fellow colegues and general public
3. Anybody who doea that is fraud
4. All frauds always have agenda to make money
Imagibe what maigh happened if people that make comercial airplanes had similar approach.

Think of the word “trick” in terms of computers. There are many “tricks and tips” for, say, Window$ XP. These ‘tricks’ are changes to the OS in order to achieve a different more desired result in it’s operation. Place that context into the coding of a program, in this case a climate model.
In science, you are supposed to deal with facts, numbers, and data in their purist form. If you do not get the desired or expected result, you are supposed to go back and figure out why you didn’t, not alter things until you do. What they are doing is like doing an experiment where you are out to combine chemical A & B to get chemical C, and when you don’t get C, you alter the formula by injecting D to then get C. It changes things completely. Or, maybe it’s like saying “yes, 1 + 3 = 5, as long as we adjust the 1 to a 2″.
What I get out of all this is that they did indeed program the model to act as THEY wanted it to, nothing less.

I truely dont know whether or not there is climate problem. But I do know that HACKING is a crime. And if no one is throwing a fit about the HACKERS. Than this infomation is planted information. Or dis informaton. The information has come out at a very convenient time, dont you think.
If there is global warming, then there will be to much fresh water in the oceans, which mess up the curant flow, which will cause much colder temps.
Whether we caused it or can stop it, remains to be seen. There is to much info comming from both sides to judge correctly. Only someone on the inside would know for sure.
So why is there no whitch hunt for the hackers? Maybe it wasnt hacked.

Seeing that they were blocking all attempts to do things legally (freedom of information requests, using political clout and money power to block requests and scientists, etc), this was the only way other than a whistle blower. If everyone in the organization was corrupt, there would be no chance of a whistle blower. Or how about the possibility that it’s being reported as a hack when it *is* a whistle blower? I would not put it past the media to report it incorrectly in order to discredit the information.
