Cutoffs and Pleas for Aid Rise With Heat Costs

After struggling with soaring heating costs through the winter, millions of Americans are behind on electric and gas bills, and a record number of families could face energy shut-offs over the next two months, according to state energy officials and utilities around the country.

The escalating costs of heating oil, propane and kerosene, most commonly used in the Northeast, have posed the greatest burdens, officials say, but natural gas and electricity prices have also climbed at a time when low-end incomes are stagnant and prices have also jumped for food and gasoline.
In New Hampshire, applicants for fuel subsidies under the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program received an average of $600 in a one-time grant and up to $975 for the extremely poor who rely on heating oil or propane, the costliest fuels. But those grants, which in recent years have covered 60 percent of heating costs, covered only about 35 percent of those costs this winter, said Celeste Lovett, director of the state’s energy aid program. The state will have given aid to about 34,500 people by the end of April, Ms. Lovett said, a 5 percent increase over last year and the highest number ever.
The most immediate challenge is to help the high number of consumers who are far behind in electric and gas payments, said Mark Wolfe, director of the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association, which represents state aid officials in Washington.

2 families in my mother’s home town burned up because they could not afford the gas bill. So they used space heaters instead. The rest is history.
My mom had to buy her dad new tires for his car because of their only 2.5% SS pay increase is causing them to have money problems. Her brother paid for the alignement.

If the CEO’s of these company’s didn’t have to make hundreds of millions of dollars a year maybe that would help subside the burden of poor and indebted people. But NO!!!! We have only experienced fallout from ’sub prime’. Just wait till the primary lenders become insolvent as the market continues to correct itself many people will owe a considerable amount more on their mortgage than what the property is now valued at. Then add to it rumors of wars, shortage or food, plus high energy prices pushing food above the threshold of what the common family can afford. It will take just one more terror attack…..people will be so fed up that they will accept anything or anyone who promises to bring them peace and prosperity.
Get ready people, its about to get alot worse. Im prepared, are you? Do you know how to prepare to keep you and your family fed and safe??

I don’t know what to tell you guys other than get a plan. Start budgeting in terms of years.

be even higher next year. So here are my plugs for saving a little. Solar Comfort makes
a heater called Suncloud, for around $450, it’s not cheap, but the heater saved and paid for itself in one winter season. Earthled makes these light bulbs that only use 3 to 5 watts of electricity.
Summer is upon us look for air conditioners that get an EER rating of over 10.7.
Antec has a line of computer power supplies called Earthwatt, I now save 30 percent on my pc’s
power consumption. Shut every thing down at once using power strips, digital timers and motion
sensors. This isn’t a game, choose how you spend your money wisely

in canada we ARE paying 150 a litre whiich is almost 6 dollars a gallon…..
so add 50 % to our heating bills for our home …..as well….
we have been feeling this for 4 years now……….
why is it that in mexico its 2 dollars a gallon 4 in the us and 6 in canada????????????
we have our own oil in alberta no one understands this here……anyone?

How about the intelligence of oil heat. Existing oil furnaces can handle biodegradable oil (B5 blend). The oil is blended with biodiesel (soybean oil, corn, etc.). Working at NORA I have been given the opportunity to research heating alternatives, and I have chosen bioheat. Not only does it burn cleaner, but it has a higher BTU content and produces absolutely NO greenhouse gases. Pretty cool huh? You should definitely look into it.

How about installing cast iron franklin stoves and burn wood that you can freely collect on commons, public forests etc.? The poor of Eastern Europe and Russia have been heeting their homes that way for centuries.

amazing that some think poor folks can just change over to bio heat…. nice the majority of people applying for heating asst. rent and have no control over their heating systems. why would the landowner compromise his bottom line by making coslty improvements. besides when are we going to keep overlooking the obvious. that is the ecconomic rape and murder of working class americans. vote obama, vote clinton, vote mccain. what has any of the candidates said they would do about living wages, affordable housing, how bout an energy policy? burn wood run cars on water, then corporate america charges $2000 for a cord of wood and $9 for a gallon of water. Ask your candidates what they plan to do, demand answers. the who is a diversion. the candidates are all the same. they want to be seen as a black man, as a woman. what about just being a plain american? its all a diversion from keeping you from asking them”what do you plan to do about anything?” we all know the problems. lets have some ideas. let alone answers

The fact is, in order to turn too bio-fuels, not only do you have to spend more time, but there are laws to force you to burn utility fuels…..they call-em permits, associated with huge inspections, and un-godly costs in materials ! I don’t care if it’s wood or biofuel, when the Fire Department knocks on your door, you’ll see what I’m talking about……”it’s a New World Order !” It’s against the law to stay warm ! All it takes is for somebody to smell smoke and call the Fire Department and then you’ll see a helicopter flying over your house with 4 cruisers outside your door !

Knowing the fact GW has stock in oil and with the stimulus package on the way, I guess he’ll make more money when they pump it into heating & transportation costs ? What a plan ! It’s unhooked ! The Bill of Rights, is only given by Law. Say anything against their wishes, and you’re a terrorist. Drug your kids by a law. Have all Officers on the beat to wear Black SWAT Clothing and flak jackets. Shoot any suspect that has the right to bare arms.
