Democrats Move to Strip Political Enemies of the Right to Own Firearms

Obama’s liberal base, led by the influential Center for American Progress (CAP), proposed on Friday a number of measures designed to rollback the Second Amendment, including a proposal to disarm Americans the government has classified as terrorists.

CAP was founded by the head of Obama’s presidential transition team after the 2008 election and the former chief of staff for president Clinton, John Podesta. The think tank receives funding from George Soros and the Democracy Alliance, an organization founded by former Clinton Treasury official Rob Stein. Members include former Rockefeller Family Fund president Anne Bartley, Tides Foundation founder Drummond Pike, and a roster of influential and wealthy liberals.

On Monday, CAP boss Neera Tanden will moderate a discussion between Democrats who have played leading roles in the effort to scale back the Second Amendment, including Rahm Emanuel, the current mayor of handgun-free Chicago and Obama’s former chief of staff. Emanuel was instrumental during the Clinton administration in getting the first assault weapons ban passed and is currently working on legislation in Chicago to seize firearms. Other Democrats who will take part in the CAP discussion include the notorious gun-grabber Chuck Schumer from New York and California’s Rep. Mike Thompson, who chairs the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

Back in 2007, Emanuel, then a member of the United States House of Representatives, told the annual Stand Up For a Safe America event sponsored by the Brady Center that Americans on the terrorist no fly list would not be allowed to own a gun.

At the time, according to the Inspector General of the FBI-administered Terrorist Screening Center, there were well over 700,000 names on the no-fly database and the list was growing at an astronomical rate of 20,000 records per month.

“The news that the list is growing tells us that more people’s rights are being violated. It’s a secret list, and the government puts people on it without any explanation,” said Nusrat Choudhury, an ACLU lawyer, last February.

Democrat senator Daine Feinstein, who has spearheaded the latest anti-Second Amendment effort and heads up the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in 2010 the “no-fly list itself is one of our best lines of defense” and recommended it be expanded and administered by the TSA.

In 2009, we reported that Democrat Rep. Carolyn McCarthy had introduced The No Fly, No Buy Act (H.R. 2401), a bill to merge the TSA’s no-fly list with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), the point-of-sale system for determining government approved eligibility to purchase a firearm. CAP’s top recommendation is to require criminal background checks for all gun sales, including sales at gun shows and private transactions between individuals.

Since the election of Obama, liberals have crafted a right-wing terrorist narrative and have used it against their political enemies. The so-called “rightwing extremist” document produced by the Department of Homeland Security during the Bush administration and subsequently leaked to the media in April of 2009 revealed how the government considers patriot groups a terrorist threat. The DHS has worked closely with the Southern Poverty Law Center and other ideological groups to demonize a wide array of political groups and individuals ostensibly on the right.

The establishment will continue to exploit the Sandy Hook massacre and other violent incidents as they work in incremental and piecemeal fashion to destroy the Second Amendment and deny their political enemies the right to possess firearms. The government’s secret no-fly and terrorist watchlists will be used to target political enemies.

So-called gun control is not primarily about protecting children. It is about disarming political enemies. The Democrat party and so-called liberal foundations have effectively corralled what they consider subversive elements on the left – as the destruction of the antiwar and Occupy movements by the establishment show – and the only remaining threat comes from patriot and constitutionalist groups that understand the importance of the Second Amendment and its real purpose – an armed defense against tyranny.
