Dodd: The United States May Be “Days Away from a Complete Meltdown of Our Financial System”

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd says the United States may be “days away from a complete meltdown of our financial system” and Congress is working quickly to prevent that.
Dodd said Friday that Democrats and Republicans on the Hill are coming together to support the Bush administration’s developing plan to buy up bad debt from financial institutions and get the credit system working again. Dodd told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that the nation’s credit is seizing up and people can’t get loans.
The ranking Republican on the Banking Committee, Senator Richard Shelby, predicts the new bailout plan will cost at least half a trillion dollars.
Shelby says the nation has “been lurching from one crisis to another.” Both veteran lawmakers say this is the most serious financial crisis they’ve seen in their years in Congress.

What amazes me (it probably shouldn’t) is the way average joes simply ignore what is going on. Last night, I sat at a local establishment listening to others conversations. All people could talk about was the OSU/USC game. I guess people here in Ohio don’t have any financial worries. Then, I addressed a woman who is married to a deputy sherrif. She was complaining that her husband only made $17.00 an hour. I made the point that most workers in our county make minimum wage, and that she should be happy her man makes what he does. After that, I brought up this debacle with the financial market, and she said “I don’t want to talk politics.”
I literally have no idea how to reach people anymore. They worry about little Johnny’s football game, but not about the Federal Reserve. They argue over Obama vs. McCain, but fail to research who backs these men. They can name every popular actor in Hollywood, but cannot name the key members of congress. Worst of all, they can quote sports statistics all night, but have no recollection of the U.S. Constitution. How are we to inform others about the coming doom, when their minds are so debased and trivial? These people I am referring to are not welfare recipients. They are college grads with decent jobs and fairly normal lives. Sorry to sound so discouraged, but it makes me sad. What does it take to change people’s attitudes?

People who worship sports as some kind of religion are unreachable. Most sports fanatics that I’ve tried talking to just don’t care about anything but sports. There are also the crowd who don’t understand politics and don’t care to learn. Not everyone can be woken up. I would say more than half the folks I come across simply don’t care. You can only do so much. If it’s not spoon fed by some good looking woman on television, some just refuse to listen or think. All we can do is try the best we can. If they don’t care there’s nothing you can do to make them. Don’t worry, at some point the fascist will show themselves to everyone. Hopefully, people will have the guts to restore their freedoms even if it means war. Personally, I’d rather die a free man than live as a slave.

Hey Jeremy, I understand exactly what you are talking about it, the problem is that people are too sensitive and you have to do a dance to figure out how they operate till they can receive and digest this kind of information it takes time.. humans in general don’t want to here the truth because they are afraid of what they don’t understand.. I Started follow all this stuff about a year ago when my wife got pregnant, I can tell you what exactly drove me but it was as if I needed to search for what life’s meaning is and about the world we live in. I researched a lot, found a lot of videos on these things and of course i have watched mad dog Alex Jones as well and i came to the conclusion that AJ is a crackpot. Most of the things he spews are so trivial “WHO CARES” he also over dramatizes things as well. over reacting will not give you the outcome you are seeking only patience and virtue will. Wait and see what happens! i don’t mean go and get a gun but see if what these conspiracy nuts are saying about this crap is true or simply canon fodder. I think people that come up with these things are so bored with there own lives they dramatize things to make it sound better than it actually is.

It’s time all. We all know this dog has been barking for a while and if it weren’t for folks like Alex, and Ron Paul (and there are many other brave souls who spoke up and I am greatful) we would still be talkin’ football etc… So take heart Jeremy, I am thankful for folks like you who speak up. I’m sure there have been many seeds you have planted, but now it’s time to shake the dust off your shoes and coat and move on to plant the next seed.
Those folks that won’t listen are floatin’ down that river in Egypt DENIAL. It’s what addicts do. And I’ll bet everyone who posts on here would agree with me that we are surrounded by glutonous addicts. They can’t help it really, they were brain washed to be this way… I know because I too am a recovering glutony addict; big house, brand new cars and all. I played the game until my child was diagnosed with Autism and then the awakening occurred.
When those in denial hit rock bottom, like any other addict, they will look up for the nearest hand they can grab on to… but no sooner. Yes, let the darn thing crash already. It’s time for all of us who know what is happening to begin pulling our resources together to help each other out at a local level and be prepared for the struggle and rebuilding of our country that lies ahead. Amen to that comment. My husband and his family all college degrees want to lock me up in a straight jacket saying I am “Over reacting” They think this is just another bump in the road and it will pass. My husband knows every score from the last months games (any games, it doesn’t matter) and he know who is doing who in Hollywood but not a clue what is REALLY happening right now. I have been storing up food and water and they will be saying sorry to me soon. Hang in there Jeremy, I, like you am consumed with all this news and ridiculous behavior from our lovely government. Thank you for running this piece! The opinions expressed by a few of the folks quoted in the larger article are so patently false as to be treasonous, unfortunately, it is these very same people who will be the least affected (not untouched, however!) by “the complete meltdown” they have wrought. For an excellent summary of what has been going on with America’s financial system for a very, very long time, please refer to “The Pentagon Strangles Our Economy: Why the US has Gone Broke” by Chalmers Johnson, 4/26/08, (LeMonde) available on Information Clearing House. This documents that the “mortgage Meltdown/debacle” (when it’s actually a whole LOT of other things: financial “derivitaves”, “collateralized debt obligations”, bets on “natural gas futures” that went sour, sewer bonds that “headed south”, so to speak – seriously! check out the sewer financial crisis- story behind Jefferson County, Alabama, I am NOT making this one up!) that the standard media continues to camp on is just a small fraction of the real root cause of our financial troubles – When Mr. Paulson states that the “root cause of stress in the capital markets is the real estate correction” he is only partly correct. Back to Mr. Chalmers Johnson: “We are spending insane amounts of money on ‘defense’ projectss that bear no relation to the national security of the US”. Also: “In our devotion to militarism (despite our limited resources) we are failing to invest in our social infrastructure and other requiements for the long-term health of the US”. Alright, let’s follow through with the big plan to “buy up TOXIC assets, such as bad mortgages”. Immediately we see a problem here: any business that intends to remain a going concern runs away from this thing referred to as “toxic assets”, and yet this insane plan is being hailed as a “solution” (?). If I go to let’s say my credit union for a loan, and my business plan calls for “buying up toxic assets”, well, this is a small county, and word will spread fast that I have lost my mind. I would be laughed out of the county, and On top of that, I will not receive a loan! In the ‘corridors of power’, wisdom is definately being mocked, and the inmates are in charge of the asylum. The standard media insists that “the roots of the current crisis can be traced to lax lending for home mortgages”, but this absolutely pales in comparison to the mountains of completely SPECULATIVE loans that were issued FIRST to development and construction firms for absolutely excessive “real estate” projects all over the country: residential, commercial, and let’s don’t forget the resort-condo monstrosities built up and down the East Coast right in the hurricane zones!! Alex, we hope you will run a story on that kind of massive real-estate/bank fraud that has been happening, with the approval of zoning boards all across this great land…Mr. Paulson, please try hard to read and understand what is going on right here in America: “In hard times, tent cities rise across the country” – Associated Press, Sept. 18, 2008. From a paper closer to home here in the Upstate of SC (The Greenville News, Sept. 16, 2008: More Seeking housing, food assistance”: Upstate relief agencies say while need grows, resources are shrinking. Hunger, homelessness, and trouble keeping heat, lights, or air conditioning on are hitting more Upstate residents… Project Hope Soup Kitchen: 17% more hungry people served this year than last – Executive Director Sally Green says “the working poor are the largest population” this soup kitchen is serving right now. Loaves and Fishes: 40% increase in requests for food. SHARE: 60% increase in requests for energy asssistance over last year, and by the way, Duke Energy and Blue Ridge Electric Co-op have informed us that they will be charging more for electricity. Alright Mr. Paulson and friends, you go ahead and bail out those banks, when what you really need to be doing NOW is helping the regular folks just get FOOD.

I’m feeling really dumb right now because I just can’t figure it out. If we’re forced to buy a bunch of worthless junk how does that make us all better off? It seems like the majority of people are walking around thinking this is a good idea and I want to be one of them and join them. But I can’t figure out how throwing money down a rat hole makes me more prosperous. The money won’t go to the “system” or to the market; it’ll go to the shareholders, executives, and bankers. These are the people who were responsible for preserving the capital and good standing of their companies. Take money from me and give it to them to make ME better off, what? It’s true I’m a shareholder of mutual funds but those are long term diversified investments. Can someone help a brother out?

And, considering the U.S. has already gone through such a crisis, it behooves us to learn about history. What happened then might be useful now, don’t you think?
What is the worse that can happen without the dollar? No buying or selling? But, you can still barter! Money is nothing but that anyway, it is a go between guy, the middle man. I think it would also be best to learn how to cope with doing without. Get used to the basic life. To say in a nut shell quoting Buddha whose teachings can be summarized to these few yet powerful words “To desire is the root cause of all ills” which can be interpreted in many ways depending on where you come from. But its a universal truth that if everyone starts desiring beyond our basic necessities then its a no brainer that it leads to all kinds of problems that we are witnessing today. Couple years ago I was interested in knowing how much of the economy of the world (US in particular) works & as I got more & more in-depth understanding I sort of started to feel something is not quite right, I mean how can one become so rich while so many others are left out or impoverished. Have read many guys’ pains taking work in exposing conspiracies to enslave the forces behind all the mess we are in today & when you think about with a open mind…….why did they become the way they are in the first place?? Isn’t it cause of the desire in ourselves to get more in terms of luxury, money, privilege beyond the basic requirements. We might defend that one’s little bit desire should not affect the entire eco-system, but what happens when you add up all the extra desires (big & small) from all the people on this planet……that is what creates monsters like Lehman bros, Meryll Lynch, Goldman Sachs etc which seem to privatize the profits & nationalize the losses.
Until we learn to live in harmony with nature & others we’ll be fighting this monter (our own collective greed/desire).

A solution so simple…give 5 million families the opportunity to buy a reasonable home with no money down, make the banks and gov waive a down payment. Put 5 million in homes that could never accumulate a down payment, so we only have to eat the down payment instead of the whole note. 5 million people paying about $1,000 per month would generate 1.2 trillion over 2 years, the real estate problem would vanish, crime would drop, the economy would jump start. Part 2: throw out the income tax, and create a 1% sales tax. This would generate 3.7 trillion per year, instead of the 2.1 trillion currently collected by individual income tax. This would work.

Why can’t anyone see this for what it really is? This is all just another
’shock and awe’ strategy exactly the same as the 9/11, Iraq, and

the middle class AND the working poor by forcing everyone into
an acceptance of the ‘work’ for your ‘credit’ balance state of
Federalism on a global order.
The super-rich get richer by forcing the public to manufacture the
products that the public will consume, then charges them an
inflated price for the consumables, all the while issuing a ‘credit’
balance for work performed. Meanwhile deducting the ‘credits’ used
from your credit account.
Should this not be prevented, not only will it be an illegal usage of
your tax dollars without due process of representation, it will also
spell an end to Free Enterprise and your ability to decide what is best
to purchase or not. You will be forced to become the ’sheeple-lemming’
that works for the federalist overlords.

Why hasn’t Dodd been arrested…he is the one who blocked all attempts at reform while being the #1 recipient of lobby money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (plus involved with Countrywide). If several congressional leaders in these various committees aren’t arrested by the FBI then it will be quite obvious that the US government is corrupt to it’s core….unfortunately the people are too complacent….fat on the couch, mesmerized by the glowing box in front of them spewing shallow mind numbing dribble.
