Experts Warn of ‘Terminator’-Style Military-Robot Rebellion

Autonomous military robots that will fight future wars must be programmed to live by a strict warrior code, or the world risks untold atrocities at their steely hands.

The stark warning — which includes discussion of a “Terminator”-style scenario in which robots turn on their human masters — is part of a hefty report funded by and prepared for the U.S. Navy’s high-tech and secretive Office of Naval Research.
The report, the first serious work of its kind on military robot ethics, envisages a fast-approaching era where robots are smart enough to make battlefield decisions that are at present the preserve of humans.
Eventually, it notes, robots could come to display significant cognitive advantages over Homo sapiens soldiers.
“There is a common misconception that robots will do only what we have programmed them to do,” Patrick Lin, the chief compiler of the report, said. “Unfortunately, such a belief is sorely outdated, harking back to a time when … programs could be written and understood by a single person.”

A 12 year old in his mothers basement can outdo what big business and government can do technologically. It’s the dumbest idea that they ever had to use digital technology to bring in their new world order. It’ll be bypassed at every step of the way. Not to mention, an EMP weapon could wipe out their entire army in one go. Sounds to me an all drone military is not very good in practice.

When a self learning program grasps the concept of self preservation YOUR life becomes secondary to it’s own existence. You might not be a troll, but you’re wrong. I haven’t seen anything on here that wasn’t either in a major news source, or backed up with documents and inside tips, or video footage. This isn’t the only site or news source that is drawing these same conclusions. People in state and federal government, military, intelligence are all starting to find this stuff out as well.

Hunting, fishing, berry picking(man those wild raspberries and huckleberries) but mainly just hanging out, hoping for sunshine. No ice fishing this winter cause the weather warmed up these past weeks, the ice is iffy this year. I all around enjoy my days, man.

Hey Smart people this story is not relevant to our time here on earth. I thought by reading the article that most of us will be dead or at least 60 yrs old IF such a thing were to occur. Nobody said terminator robots will turn on humans next week. This is a futuristic story and a warning to how in the future robots will have the ability to think ahead to react to a problem that hasn’t happened yet. Plus don’t you know technology more than doubles each year. Meaning it is always getting faster and sooner or later if not kept in check can get out of control if our kids, kids are dumb enough to let it.

First off I must say that this is a really report. All you fools who think this cant happen need to realize that the government wouldn’t research this possability just to waste time if it wasn’t a real threat. Keep in mind the programming and technology we see in the public face is usually 2-4 steps behind what is really available. I know some of you are programers and say its immpossible for this to happen. The reality is the programming used is not the same old if this then do that type programming. They use what I can only call the closest thing to AI that is available, which is programing the robot to make a decision based on almost infinite factors, not base a decision in a certain set of rules. Thats why the threat may (or may not) exsist. Because they are literally trying to program a thinking, infinite decision making robot, not like the chess one that will make millions of scenarios and decisions but only for the chess board.

In reality if a BOT is made to interact with other online hardware, is aware of humans, is able to identify objects rebuild its self and take over total global perception, understand all info, and relize all threats instantaniously, humanity would have NO CHANCE TO RALLY in technological areas… they would be totally dominated and preempted, only in a zone out of the AI’s awareness would one be safe… out of satelite coverage, out of orbital drone footage… it would almost be impossible to counter to fight to hide from such a bot if it was coded to interlink with such systems of perception intergration and functionality…

Only semi-massively parallel systems using fairly simple PU’s can demonstrate significant problem solving at rates vastly superior to humans.
Such systems, if distributed, would be almost impossible to eliminate, due to their enhanced communication abilities (very fast rates w/ little error loss while executing numerous other tasks).

The simple fact is, as Shundrallah pointed out, that the adaptability of a clever-but-fast problem solver is unmatched by human skill.
Such a thing would have very different priorities to us. Our accuracy diminishes as our task load increases, whereas a self-modifying machine would merely need to add more busses to accommodate additional parallelism.
It’s safe to say that, if such a thing exists or is created, we had better stop it quickly.

I think the point may be that robots/computers are imperfect and malfunctions could cause them to slaughter anything that moves, including their controller. And what about technology as a whole? We assume that the best technology out there is only what we personally know about. You guys ever think about the possibility that the government just might have technology decades ahead of what we use in the public domain?
We’ve seen actual terminator style robots in articles past, in primitive forms and not as advanced as anything we’ve seen in Hollywood movies. They exist and are being worked on, that fact alone should worry any reasonable person.
The stealth fighter was built in the mid seventies and we didn’t even think such technology was possible until we saw with our own eyes during the first gulf war. Just something to think about.

Yep, they’ve definitely been working on this. I remember the video, a year or so ago, of a combat robot that could run on four legs. Then there was the robot that fires a built-in machinegun. It’s also true that the technology we’ve been shown is well behind what they’re working on. Still, though, unless they’ve developed heuristically programmed robots (self-programming, like HAL 9000 in “2001: A Space Odyssey”), there is no way a robot can do anything it hasn’t been programmed to do. Period.

It’s relatively easy to program a robot to wander purposely, identifying pre-trained, or continuously tracked human (or other) subjects, aim energy or projectile or explosive weapons, and fire.

Very good points.
When Star Trek came out in the sixty’s nobody could imagine that things like the hypo (needleless vacine guns), communicator (flip phone), or PADD (Palm Pilot) would ever exsist. NASA is even looking at a version of warping space as a method of propulsion. Of course this is many years away but theoreticly possible.
If a “terminator” type robot ever becomes a reality, the AI routines will probibly be based on computer virus programming. These routines can modify themselves just as a live virus does.
As I recall Terminator 3 was based on that theme.
Today’s science fiction often becomes tomorows science fact.

It’s not that far off, we already have unmanned combat and surveillance drones, the technology already exists today for someone with the knowhow to build a remote controlled 4wheeler atv and mount a scoped semiauto sniper rifle to it controlled by servos all relayed back via cellphone to a laptop computer where as you scroll the mouse around it moves the gun, push w for forward s for backward a left d right spacebar to fire etc.

What this article barely touches on is the impact that AI will have in the monitoring and surveillance of Americans. Unless we begin to eliminate the garbage and inacurracies in the existing database, AI will act without morality and or human compassion on data that is less than factual and less than completly trustworthy. This alone is a severe weakness in the Government’s system of approach to complete control of the populace. As such, AI in the hands of the NWO elite poses more threat to American freedoms than the act of declaring martial law. AI even poses a threat to the NWO and for the most part the NWO just doesnt get it.

I keep telling myself or my other self, I don’t know I got got so many of them, 13 to be exact.
I say Tom things have got to get better one day at least for one of us. You know? And maybe the Robot wars will do it.
When I finally build my first time traveling machine I’m going to come back and do this again and again just to see what it is like after I get done doing some other things with my time travel machine.
I have some great ideas on how to build one, and surprising it is easier to go back into the past then going forward into the future because time in the past has already been and you can’t travel to something that hasn’t existed unless somehow you were gone for a very very long time.

I love the skeptics don’t worry attitude. It’s very simple. Humans ARE predators. So you have predators engineering military robots. This is not fiction. How many times does programming code go wrong?? Constantly. When singularity is reached people will not be writing the code, because it would take longer and be more costly. Artificial Intelligence is ALREADY designing warheads. Do a search on Stephen Thaler and his work for DARPA and other DOD. The British have designed the ECOBOT which powers itself by digesting the living, and turning that into electricity. There will be nobody at the controls of autonomous robots, but artificial intelligence, and do you really think a higher intelligence is going to be controlled by beings that can’t even control themselves. We are basically ALL being sacrificed to make the new evolution, of man to machine, and with all that computers control already, it’s possible that singularity has occurred already, but the bots are smart enough to lie low and set up the infrastructure to get rid of the obsoletes. That’s us. Electromagnetic Pulse is only a threat to electronics engineered without taking EMP’s into consideration. If you think the military is going to have robots without EMP protection, your just not thinking.

I am a programmer. Unless the government is using some kind of new fancy computer systems that can think for themselves, none of this will happen. Robots do not think. They do not learn (only what they are programmed to adapt to). They do what they are programmed to do and nothing more.
There could be bugs that cause a self-acting robot to misidentify its targets, perhaps attacking anything that moves. The robots could be linked by a network and one may have a bug where it sends an already programmed “massacre” command to all the others and the robots just all go crazy killing everything that moves. But all of that would have to be already programmed in order for bugs like that to exist.

While I share the tongue and cheek comments from fellow posters, I can see a time in the not to distant future when we do have robotic armies, now mind you not on the scale of I-Robot or the Terminator but I can see it coming eventually. Because if you think about it, the Government is already experimenting with Exo-Skeleton Armor for “LIVE” troops, where robotics meets humanity to give soldiers electronic senses, super human strength. Now take that in conjunction with the newly introduced unmanned spy planes, smart weapons, smart bullets even and realize that the pieces are falling into place even as we speak. I feel the government will continue at all costs this type of fusion of human and machine until the human part of the equation becomes the machines weakest link and the human is eliminated from the process, thus we’ll have the cybernetic robots as spoken of earlier.
