Exxon Mobile Says ‘No’ to DOJ’s LGBT Discrimination Memo: We Already Do Enough

In a move designed to deepen the rift between supporters and opponents of DOMA, the Department of Justice has released new anti-discrimination guidelines. LGBT Inclusion at Work: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Managers asks employers to amend their current Equal Employment Opportunity policies to provide a “safe and welcome” workplace for LGBT employees. Exxon Mobile says, “No.”
The new memo includes instructions such as: Don’t assume all employees are heterosexual, don’t use words like “husband” or “wife,” and do let your employees know they’ll be treated with fairness and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
On Wednesday, shareholders at ExxonMobil were approached by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli with a proposal to amend their Equal Employment Opportunity policy to reflect the new DOJ guidelines.
“Employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity can diminish employee morale and productivity,” the proposal stated. “ExxonMobil will enhance its competitive edge by joining the growing ranks of companies guaranteeing equal opportunity for all employees.”
But ExxonMobil officials said the company’s existing policy already broadly prohibits discrimination of any kind, and voted 80 percent to 20 percent against the proposal.
“Based on these existing all-inclusive, zero-tolerance policies, the Board believes the proposal is unnecessary,” according to comments from board members in the proxy statement. ExxonMobil declined to comment beyond what was said in the proxy statement.
According to Money.com, “this decision puts ExxonMobil in the small pool of 12 percent of Fortune 500 companies that don’t specifically ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in the Equal Employment Opportunity policies, according to the Human Rights Campaign.” And because their policies don’t specify the inclusion of LGBT employees, ExxonMobil received a “corporate equality” score of negative 25, the lowest in the industry.
However, as GiGi Erneta pointed out in her special report for InfoWars, the LGBT community makes up only 4% of the population in the US. Most employers amended their employmee discrimination policies years ago to make the all-inclusive. Is there really a need to go back and change the wording to include LGBT employees? And if so, where do we stop? And what if we miss someone?
According to Erneta, UK officials are already considering removing the words “husband” and “wife” from all official documents. In France, they’re going to remove the words “mother” and “father” and replace them with “parent.”
Soon, we’ll all be referred to with anonymous androgynous terms like “It,” or “cattle,” … or “Sheeple.” And , as Ernata says, “What happened to the first amendment liberties for the people who are straight and christian?
