FDA Declares Form of Vitamin B6 a Drug

The FDA has effectively banned a naturally-occurring form of vitamin B6 called pyridoxamine by declaring it to be a drug, reports the American Association for Health Freedom. Responding to a petition filed by a drug company, the FDA declared pyridoxamine to be "a new drug."

Pyridoxamine occurs naturally in fish, chicken and other foods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B6), putting the FDA in the strange position of banning a substance from dietary supplements even though it is already present in the food supply.

It’s not the first time the FDA has declared a natural molecule to be a "drug" while attacking nutritional supplements that contain the same molecule. A similar story unfolded with red yeast rice and the lovastatin molecules it contains that lower high cholesterol. The drug companies engaged in biopiracy, ripping off the molecule from red yeast rice to make their now-famous "statin drugs." Once the statin drugs were patented, Big Pharma and the FDA went after red yeast rice, claiming the supplement was "adulterated with pharmaceuticals."
It wasn’t really adulterated, of course. It just contained a natural statin-drug-like molecule that the drug companies copied and patented.
It would be like Big Pharma patenting vitamin C, then the FDA claiming that all oranges and lemons were adulterated with drugs because they naturally contain their own vitamin C.

So will this ruling on pyridoxamine affect nutritional supplements? Yes, any supplements containing this form of vitamin B6 can now be declared "adulterated" by the FDA. Manufacturers of such supplements can be arrested and shut down for engaging in "illegal drug trafficking." Such is the nature of the FDA’s agenda to criminalize nutritional supplement companies and limit consumers’ access to Mother Nature’s remedies.

I am against the banning of any naturally occuring vitamin, and the drug war, but what this article fails to menion is that Pyridoxamine is a precursor to Pyridine, which is a precursor to MDA and MDMA.
Given the above, this article is somewhat less alarmist, although the banning of anything by the FDA still sucks.

Where did that goofy information about pyridine come from? There is no pyridine ring in MDMA. If there was, what would that prove? Production of MDMA from vitB6 has never occurred. Get a grip.

From what little organic chemistry I know, pyridine would be a precursor to pyridoxamine not the other way around. Looking at MDMA I guess I could imagine how pyridoxamine or pyridine could be used to provide a nitrogen on that propyl branch but it makes no sense I can see to use a pyridine ring and have to convert it to a benzene in the end.
Next, This article does suck, because it is not clear enough. The reason as I’ve found appears to be that a drug company called biostratum claims to have a patent on it. If you follow the links though, it makes sense.
Another big reason not to trust drug companies.

I just didn’t like the (slanted) alarmism, and remembered reading about a synth awhile back using piridine as a reagent. It checked out, so I posted it.
Would like to see both sides of the story and form my own opinion, but fun to get called on something in an intelligent manner all the same.

Your reply does not back up your claim of pyridine as a percursor to MDMA. It simply would not be practical to use pyridine to make MDMA. It is typically used as a solvent in things like amide bond formation reactions, but is not used so much anymore because of difficulties in work-up, it must be neutralized with sulfuric acid, forming a disgusting sludge. Yes, it is theoretically possible to make any organic molecule from acetylene, and acetyene could be produced from pyridine via a retro-diels-alder reaction, but this is never done because of immense cost, and immense time considerations. When making pharmaceuticals, a cheap starting material is chosen which can easily be transformed into the desired product. Pyridine is one of the worst possible choices for the starting material in an MDMA synth. It may be used as a solvent in one of the reactions, but you specifically said pyridine was a PERCURSOR, not a solvent, so you are giving bad information. Your EROWID link gives saffrole (a good choice) as the percursor, not pyridine, and those two molecules are nothing alike.

I was stating what the FDA classifies as ‘precursor chemicals’. Semantics, but I stand corrected nonetheless.
Safrole is the starting point, and there is a reaction involving pyridine to get to piperonal, which is scheduled if I understand correctly, and impossible to purchase either unless you like Federal agencies knocking at your door. Therefore a synth is necessary.
Your Chem knowledge is obviously better than my rudimentary knowledge. The point I was trying to make was that there may be an alternative reason for banning/scheduling the substance, and the other side of the story should have been given in the article.
I subscribe that it is an incremental step in making access to vitamins etc difficult in accordance with what the author is trying to say. He has done himself a disservice by not reporting the other side of the story.

It is the OUTLAWING of ANY natural vitamin or other object to squelch our right to be healthy without BIG PHARMA”S profiteering from it.

Anyone have a box of “Emergen-C”? It contains B6 aka Pyridoxamine, just look at the label. So now my ordinary normal orange flavored vitamin drink is regulated. Disgusting. I’m so sick of the FDA and health depts it is ridiculous. Like what they did with Tryptophan.
BTW DMT is naturally in your brain and it is a DEA controlled substance, so I guess that makes all of us illegal.

The wiki article on B6 says, “The vitamin was named pyridoxine to indicate its structural homology to pyridine. Later it was shown that vitamin B6 could exist in two other, slightly different, chemical forms, termed pyridoxal and pyridoxamine”
But the wiki article on Pyridoxamine says B6 is composed of

The B6 at the supermarket lists Pyridoxine Hydrochloride. That’s the form I’ve always seen listed on nutrition labels, so big gov’t will be able to get away with this largely unnoticed.

I’m glad someone mentioned Centrum. I want you to look at your bottle and peak at Vitamin B12. Do you see in parenthesis the ingredient (cyanocobalimine). That is CYANIDE binding to the vitamin.

Don’t feel badly roaddog, most of us were taking the cheap versions for years.
I will tell you though, if my clients are any indication, they have made DRAMATIC changes in just a little over a month. They have more energy and have such a feeling of health and wellness that it literally shines from them as they come into my office. Many of them didn’t look like they would last long enough to see 2009 come in and now they look like they are ready to go for major hikes!

Yes, and they would probably love to find a way to ban apricot and apple seeds because of it. Most fruit seeds (Apricot seeds especially) contain B17, Laetrile, Amygdalin, all of which have shown promise in treating cancer. My dad was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in Sept 2008. Sadly, he died on February 7, 2009.
I didn’t know much about the politics of cancer until I started researching it when Dad got diagnosed late last year. I found http://www.cancertutor.com and was surprised to see what the FDA, the American Medical Association, “Big Pharma”, the American Cancer Society, etc. have done to suppress natural cures for all sorts of ailments.

I have ben censored too, a few times. I’ll post, not threaten to actually do something myself, but hope it is done to illegals and such, call people traitors who side with them, use no more curse words than I see on a daily basis here, and STILL get my post deleated, which pisses me off to no end or the story disappears magically like a fart in the wind, because 98% of the time I come back to see the replies.

We all know that the FDA is a shill for the pharmaceutical business. Some gang of crooks sees an opportunity to make us pay for something we used to get for free, or make us pay a lot more for something we used to get on the cheap.

(b)…B-6 — Use P5P form. Take 50 to100mg daily…your Multi will likely have 5 to 50mg. The P5P form of B-6 converts Homocysteine into cysteine. (c)…B-12 — ALWAYS take sublingually (under the tongue). Your Multi will have anywhere from 10 to 200mcg of the less active form, Cyanocobalamin. I recommend you take from 1000 to 5000mcg of the preferred more active form, Methylcobalamin. Don’t let those big doses scare you…it’s non-toxic and is very multi-purposeful, especially at large doses. B-12, not only converts Homocysteine back to methionine through remethylation but it gives you energy & aids in digestion.

I have been in protesting in NZ for the last decade, because of the implications of CODEX coming to New Zealand and the world.
The first started with the closing down of Pan Pharmeceuticals by the Australian TTGA, a corrupt organisation given the “authority” to police the Supplement in dustry. They successfully have been sued $50,000,000 (more pending) for corruption into trying to close down supplement companies and involved in Pharma kickbacks, “suprise, suprise”
This TTGA was to rule the NZ Health, supplement industry, and we protested and won against them by 1 vote in parliament, which was pretty difficult due to the industry run smear campaign to show the public that all naturally derived plant extracts and components were bad for you, and anything that is thereputic should and would be classed as a drug.
Bear this in mind, most drugs are derived from the effective working components of plants, fruits, extracts and are then synthesized and sold as drugs.
From here, the original natural component is then publically demonised by expensive public campaigns with big backers. The FDA will be part of this, as they have vested interests, shareholding interests, in these companies as they nearly all onces worked for them.
Vitamin C is next, Omega 3 etc.
This is the way Big Pharma works.

If they make vitamin B a drug, then when someone wants vitamin B it will be required to go to the clinic and see a doctor to get it, and then the doctor will act like he’s prescribing something that will help you but it will really do nothing for you at all. Why would you go to the doctor if he’s medicine is nothing that will help you get back to better?

Does anyone realize that vitamin B6 helps regulate some hormones, including reproductive hormones, and it often aids in maintaining fertility? Sometimes, supplementing with this particular vitamin even helps those who wish to get pregnant but can’t.
So what does that tell you?

On the one hand it would be nice to know with scientific certainty through clinical trials the actual benefits and risks associated with a given supplement, as is the case with drugs. but on the other hand science and big pharma money interests would preclude any parental or cultural rights and preferences that may be based on faith. and there is a problem with trust bigtime now in all governmental spheres.
