The Food and Drug Administration will monitor foods imported to the U.S. from Japan for radiation exposure, following the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.
The most common imports from the devastated country are seafood, snack foods and processed fruits and vegetables.
FDA officials said they are now collecting information on where these products are grown, harvested or manufactured in Japan so they can ensure anything that is imported is not tainted with radiation.
They have ‘procedures and laboratory techniques for measuring radionuclide levels in food’ and are working with customs, which can scan full shipping containers.
