Fed Official: Real Unemployment at 16 Percent

“If one considers the people who would like a job but have stopped looking — so-called discouraged workers — and those who are working fewer hours than they want, the unemployment rate would move from the official 9.4 percent to 16 percent, said Atlanta Fed chief Dennis Lockhart.
He underscored that he was expressing his own views, which did “do not necessarily reflect those of my colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee,” the policy-setting body of the central bank.
Lockhart pointed out in a speech to a chamber of commerce in Chattanooga, Tennessee that those two categories of people are not taken into account in the Labor Department’s monthly report on the unemployment rate. The official July jobless rate was 9.4 percent.

No jobs, no production, no recovery… just an artificial feel good bubble created by the feds printing press, which just translates into higher taxes for everyone. Hell, in NC we are going up another percent on the standard tax rate, as well as having a Sin tax, of 45 cent on a damn coke, to 13% tax on alcohol, etc… the flood of new taxes have begun… and no one has a job to pay for them. Look for hyperinflation soon.

Back in the middle eighties, I read the galley version of a book called “World Rollover” by C.W. Myers. I bought the book from Amazon for less than $6 total. Myers was born in 1912, and published a financial investment newsletter, back when there was no internet. By “rollover” he meant the unstoppable impact of history on people in the world, and a sort of payback for the incorrect things done.
One of the points he made, was that entire economies being driven by “jobs” was a recent trend. Only a hundred years ago, people worked on farms or had family businesses. He also showed how feminism added to the labor pool, and cut down the chances of men finding jobs. Women also are among the first to go when there are layoffs, and added a brand new component to unemployment figures. Today, we have forgotten how women’s’ lib has effected the economy, and also the family as an institution.
Another point was the exponentially rising world population, and the huge migrations of people in search of food that would occur. Today, the same people who rail against the illegal immigration in the US, will tell you there are no effects from over population.
Written 25 years ago, the book is a good read, and a nice historical background of today’s events. And it shows how people who stick to immutable laws can predict the future.
