So as it turns out, even the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has its own SWAT team.
You don’t need to know. You can’t know.” That’s what Kathy Norris, a 60-year-old grandmother of eight, was told when she tried to ask court officials why, the day before, federal agents had subjected her home to a furious search.
The agents who spent half a day ransacking Mrs. Norris’ longtime home in Spring, Texas, answered no questions while they emptied file cabinets, pulled books off shelves, rifled through drawers and closets, and threw the contents on the floor.
The six agents, wearing SWAT gear and carrying weapons, were with – get this- the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Kathy and George Norris lived under the specter of a covert government investigation for almost six months before the government unsealed a secret indictment and revealed why the Fish and Wildlife Service had treated their family home as if it were a training base for suspected terrorists. Orchids.
That’s right. Orchids.
By March 2004, federal prosecutors were well on their way to turning 66-year-old retiree George Norris into an inmate in a federal penitentiary – based on his home-based business of cultivating, importing and selling orchids..
Mr. Norris ended up spending almost two years in prison because he didn’t have the proper paperwork for some of the many orchids he imported. The orchids were all legal – but Mr. Norris and the overseas shippers who had packaged the flowers had failed to properly navigate the many, often irrational, paperwork requirements the U.S. imposed when it implemented an arcane international treaty’s new restrictions on trade in flowers and other flora.
The judge who sentenced Mr. Norris had some advice for him and his wife: “Life sometimes presents us with lemons.” Their job was, yes, to “turn lemons into lemonade.”
Or just wait for the inevitable SWAT team to come and smash them for you.

It is strange that American Troops were “guarding” pot fields in that video. However, I saw absolutely no evidence of partying. The music was added to the video. I saw dust from the Humvee driving by, and one guy made the symbol for “smoking weed” to the camera, but it didn’t look like a party. (maybe a covert harvest?) I think 2 months is enough time for any reasonable appeals. A reasonable appeal would be like you got the wrong guy or hey, i tried to stop them. Also 2 months lets them get their affairs in order, and makes them think awful hard about what they done. Of course, in war, sometimes, you can’t wait 2 months.

@Capt Jack…is Texas a model–free/independent? In some ways yes, but there are certain issues in our country coming from Washington that even stinks up a state like Texas. One of those issues is, and always has been giving cops too much power and turning a blind eye to it. For instance 4th Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure. Washington troopers have recently started a pilot program where if you refuse roadside breathalizer, then the cops take you to the local goolag, hold you down, jam your arm with a needle, and take your blood by force!? You dont go to a hospital, you dont see a doctor or a nurse!! All this is done by the local cops. Federal trainers showed them how to do it. And where are the two states they started their pilot program?… IDAHO AND TEXAS !?!? Why Idaho and Texas? If they can set a precedant in these two independant minded states, and get away with their unconstitutional behavior…then the rest of the country will fall easily behind.

So the problem wasn’t the flowers, it was the federal import laws being violated… nice spin. The fish and wildlife service having it’s own SWAT team is kinda weird and I highly doubt they are on call 24/7 like a county SWAT team just waiting to fulfill that felony warrant for exceeding your limit for sunfish. Game wardens do carry guns and felony violators are dangerous, no matter how old they are. SWAT team? Please, I bet it was 3-5 agents with shotguns. Give me a break.

Ok, cool. I’m curious as to what happened to the 2,050 orchids on the endangered species list that he smuggled into the country with Peruvian citizen Manuel Arias-Silver without the permission of either the US or Peruvian government in accordance with the CITES treaty.

Seeds travel naturally and freely from country to country and from continent to continent. Birds and other animals carry them unwillingly and deposit them all over their pass. Forbidding the import and export of seeds to humans is as criminal as it is idiotic. George, along with his business associate Peruvian grower Manuel Arias-Silver, is charged with conspiracy to smuggle endangered phragmipediums (orchids) into the U.S. Since Manuel is one of only three growers to have been given permission by the Peruvian government to artificially propagate the newly discovered phragmipedium Kovachii, it appears that the U.S. government has singled out the pair for special attention over suspicions that this is the species they were smuggling. There appears to be little evidence of this, though it is likely the pair were taking some shortcuts on paperwork because of the challenges of importing other, legally propagated species, into the U.S.
In the orchid world, the CITES treaty is almost universally denounced; the charge is that it does nothing to stop habitat destruction, and actually encourages illegal smuggling of wild-collected plants because the regulations make it so difficult to trade in artifically-propagated specimens.
