During the G8 confab at Camp David this weekend, the “major industrial nations” called for turning up the heat on North Korea and Iran in response to their nuclear programs.
Nutrition security — except for the North Koreans.
“We continue to have deep concerns about provocative actions of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) that threaten regional stability,” Xinhua quoted the group as saying in a joint statement. It demanded North Korea “comply with its international obligations” and abandon its nuclear program in a “complete, verifiable, and irreversible manner.”
It called on United Nations member states to act against North Korea for its ballistic missile and nuclear tests.
Following North Korea’s failure to launch an earth observation satellite in March, the U.S. said it would not honor a commitment to provide the pariah state with food. The United States accused North Korea of using the launch as a cover for its long-range ballistic missile program.
The G8 also expressed a “grave concern” over Iran’s nuclear program. “We call on Iran to comply with all of its obligations under relevant UNSC resolutions and requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors,” the G8 leaders declared.
It demanded Iran “address without delay” issues surrounding its nuclear program and the unsubstantiated claim that the Islamic Republic is developing nuclear weapons.
The G8 club includes the United States, Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy. Of these, the United States, Russia, the U.K., and France have large arsenals of nuclear weapons.
The United States is the only nation to have used nuclear weapons in war. In 1945, the U.S. military nuked the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
“The real mortality of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan will never be known. The destruction and overwhelming chaos made orderly counting impossible. It is not unlikely that the estimates of killed and wounded in Hiroshima (150,000) and Nagasaki (75,000) are over conservative,” writes Children of the Atomic Bomb.
